Year 2, Day #32 "Year of the Dragon" (Michael Cimino/1985) Michael Cimino's excellent crime/thriller based on the book of the same name by Robert Daley. You may not have seen this one, so go check it out!

A great action film & a superb piece of Vietnam blowback cinema. Free to read at the link below andrewnette.substack.com/p/forget-it-...

Or even better, how about a giant problematic cop movie starring Mickey Rourke and John Lone? YEAR OF THE DRAGON wraps things up for this particular weekend of August '85. You really should check it out.

neutral · AI labelView post →Pauline Kael absolutely nailed Michael Cimino in her review of Year of the Dragon (1985). This is true of all of his work, including The Deer Hunter (1978), though i would say it peaks with The Sicilian (1987), a film that is truly visually stunning but totally dead on arrival.

neutral · AI labelView post →To go with my new Junk Filter episode here’s the Italian trailer for Cimino’s YEAR OF THE DRAGON: the US trailer made it look like an epic crime drama but the Italian one is more indicative of the fact that Dino De Laurentiis produced it, playing up the violence and sleaze youtu.be/LPdxUYUvwa4?...
neutral · AI labelView post →Year of the Dragon rocks, although the last time I recommended the movie to somebody I had to stress heavily that just because Rourke is really charismatic and racist in the movie doesn’t mean the movie agrees with him. neutral · AI labelView post →She should've been cast in 'Year of the Dragon' too: it wouldn't have made the movie any less racist but at least she can act.

neutral · AI labelView post →Year of the Dragon is about a cop trying to take down a Triad boss. This is the third Michael Cimino film I've seen. I always knew his career imploded after The Deer Hunter, but I liked Heaven's Gate. This film is a mess and so poorly directed, that I wondered if Cimino ever had any talent. #filmsky
