It’s no criticism of the film to say that it doesn’t solve the world. I think it’s just that I see that fantasy so often.

unlabelledView post →If I had a nickel for every movie about an actress from “Women Talking” dealing with grief while owning a bird of prey I’d have two nickels, which isn’t much but it’s weird that it happened twice

As a critic, I'm astonished how many films resolve around male violence towards women, and this dares to tackle the topic overtly. 5/5 film-authority.com/2025/08/05/w...
unlabelledView post →Disgusted to have left Women Talking (2022) off this list. It's the best movie about collective decision making I've ever seen; practically the first scene is them choosing between exit, voice, & loyalty.
unlabelledView post →Of all my complicated feelings about the Women Talking movie, what absolutely makes me tear up every time, literally happening now as I type this, is that they preserved August saying goodbye to Salome: "We'll meet again." "We'll meet again." (1/2)

unlabelledView post →This @fitwr.bsky.social review of a person catching up with our Women Talking episode is good criticism about how we should let @kateyrich.bsky.social talk more, but I also chuckled remembering "looked like butt" as the color grading/saturation of that movie was...uh...bad.
unlabelledView post →I’m not gonna tell you not to watch Women Talking, but it will greatly reduce how often you want to say, “this movie has a real Women Talking energy.” about any movie where women are talking.

unlabelledView post →There’s so much to like in that SUPERMAN trailer, but the color grade of the film is just bafflingly ugly, maybe the most noticeably misjudged color grades since WOMEN TALKING.
unlabelledView post →The book Women Talking by Miriam Toews and movie adaptation by Sarah Polley covers this in a pretty devastating way.

Today: 'Women Talking' directed by Sarah Polley, based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews.

unlabelledView post →I recently watched Women Talking, and it had more emotional impact on me than the absurd lengths the Marvel or Star Wars movies have gone to try and make me feel any emotion whatsoever. As an aside, did you know that Rain Man was the worldwide top grossing movie of 1988?
unlabelledView post →Fun fact: both American screen versions of Lisabeth Salander , Rooney Mara and Clare Foy , appeared together in the movie Women Talking. I hope #HATM does that some day.

unlabelledView post →First post on BlueSky. Watched #WomenTalking last night. What a powerful film for the times we live in!!! Based on a 2018 fiction book by Miriam Toews, it is loosely based off a true story that happened in a Mennonite community in Bolivia between 2005-2009. screenrant.com/women-talkin...
unlabelledView post →I assigned the film Women Talking for my "What is Religion" course this semester, and I'm so glad I did. Questions of agency, religion as oppressive tool as well as emancipatory resource, how religion binds and breaks "the social," so many threads to pull on, and such a powerful medium.

unlabelledView post →@davechen.bsky.social The new FLDS doc “Trust Me: False Prophet” on Netflix seems like it’s right up your alley. The filmmakers were given a crazy amount of access to this Mormon cult leader and try to bring him to justice while they film. It’s like Women Talking + The Jinx at times

Those colonies have stayed more isolated and some are very conservative and live in more mountainous regions (see: the book/movie Women Talking). Mainstream US and Canadian Mennonites are, well, mainstream.

unlabelledView post →Bumping up a review of Women Talking, underseen on release, on BBC iplayer. In a way, the lack of appreciation demonstrates how accurate Sarah Polley's argument is; women's voices are ignored, and only by breaking away from male-controlled media can they be heard. film-authority.com/2023/02/06/w...
