60 of 84 · most liked firstin mundane but important-to-me news, I played this game Videoverse over the last while and finished it today, and the story of the game was good but I didn't feel, you know, devastated by it . young love. touching but we've all been there. and then it had an epilogue which just wrecked me outright

unlabelledView post →You know that dream when you go back to school knowing what you know now and crushing it? I got very similar feeling from Videoverse - it was in a way an opportunity to go back in time, use what you learned from your mistakes and be kinder to people, even if they are characters in a game. Also, kinda goes without saying, but gorgeously drawn and animated. Highly recommend.

unlabelledView post →(spoiler-free review) Game completed in 9 hours. I think this is my 2nd-most favourite game in the whole world. The atmosphere is so cozy and nostalgic. The music is dope (PLEASE let me buy the soundtrack), the art is so charming, and the characters are all so interesting/funny. I played through Videoverse in a "positive" way(?) Meaning, I did my best to show support and kindness to users who were struggling and I reported users who were being downright cruel/rude (tho tbh I gave some posts…

unlabelledView post →Videoverse is a decision-based visual novel filled with nostalgia of the internet in the early 2000’s. This is a game that will resonate mostly with those in their 30’s who experienced the early internet era, or those who were young and closely involved in the community of a dying MMO game. I am a bit younger than the target audience, but I still enjoyed the story and flashback to the golden days. Videoverse is a niche title, but one that can demonstrate both the wholesomeness and toxicity of…

unlabelledView post →It's a slick looking game, wrapped up in pretty graphics and a flimsy nostalgia, but its heart is thoroughly modern and for that all the lesser. I expected this game to truly bring me back to the days it claims to take place in, but it failed pretty miserably at that. The writing itself is aggressively twee and precious, with the kids sometimes talk more like they're from livejournal than some video game forum. You can guess the plot and drama that will unfold pretty quickly from the outset,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Man, dunno what I expected when I started this game. What a beautiful journey about friendship, being a teenager and the bonding over videogames. A nice lesson about how even if fandoms die, games shutdown and people move on, the bonds we made existed, were real and will shape us and follow us all our life so we should treasure each friendship we had. Thanks Kinmoku for creating such beautiful game, it will be in my mind for a long time.

unlabelledView post →Videoverse is a visual novel that encapsulates the feeling of being a teenager on the Internet, desperately waiting for your friends to appear online and refreshing forums for any sign of information. It's blended a little with the Miiverse and its inevitable closure, something that I wasn't quite a part of, but there's a lot of resonant feelings for anyone who's found solace in an online space that's doomed--as they all are--to the annals of history when it no longer becomes profitable or…

unlabelledView post →Sublime, Videoverse is sublime. Firstly, it's a visual novel that doesn't feel like one, as it takes place on a fictional console system whose days are numbered with the arrival of a new model. Here, as well as chatting to progress the story, you can explore some forums, give likes, make comments and so on, all very interactive with a nostalgic pixel-art aesthetic. It does a good job with its characters and scenes, capturing the typical internet drama, with things like stalkers, trolls, haters…

unlabelledView post →Miiverse was great, so a Miiverse-alike for a fictional Nintendo-alike sounded right up my alley. Unfortunately, I really don't think this game delivers on that promise. So little of the actual game is looking at people's posts. Bafflingly, there is only one single game community you can browse, and it hardly feels like it's about the game. You can never see screenshots from the game, they almost never ask for advice or actually talk about game mechanics, almost all the fan art is just the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Emotionally engaging portrait of an online forum in the 2000s that is nearing the end of its days. OK, more than "engaging"...at one point toward the end I was sobbing. Kinmoku brings the characters and their stories to life with a remarkable economy of words, pixels, and musical tones.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →'Videoverse' by @kinmoku.bsky.social is a game that is almost *too* good - it's such a painfully and powerfully evocative depiction of 'digital life for teenagers in the early to mid 2000s' that I keep needing to take a break from it. Really, really brilliant work.

unlabelledView post →It was an adorable and touching game; it felt authentic in its world and narrative to that early internet/2000s experience (visuals are stylized in different ways to lean into a retro feel, but I felt they fit in with the overall vibe). It is surprisingly touching in places, and there are some exciting bits of branching in the narrative as well - diving back in to see how choices affect the overall story. It was also an impressive effort for such a small team working on it - in presentation and…

After replaying this visual novel, I felt the need to leave a review.
