The Wrestler
Aging wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson is long past his prime but still ready and rarin' to go on the pro-wrestling circuit. After a particularly brutal beating, however, Randy hangs up his tights, pursues a serious relationship with a long-in-the-tooth stripper, and tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. But he can't resist the lure of the ring and readies himself for a comeback. From TMDB

unlabelledView post →the only good thing darren aranofsky has ever made was The Wrestler, a movie where the actors and the script did all the heavy lifting and probably almost anyone else could have done as good a job, if not better, with those advantages ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
unlabelledView post →oh cool another reason for me to not watch another darren aronofsky movie (on top of i already thought most of them sucked and i don't think he can really take credit for why The Wrestler is great)
unlabelledView post →The weird thing with the Aronofsky nonsense is that his best movie is The Wrestler, a movie that succeeds largely thanks to the raw humanity of its performances. Why run from that? 🤷♂️
unlabelledView post →I think the movie The Wrestler hit harder for me than it may have otherwise is because the marketing campaign made u think you were in for a movie that actually was about redemption
unlabelledView post →Sometimes I think about Hulk Hogan always claiming (falsely) that he was in line to play the lead in The Wrestler, and what an absolute dogshit movie that would’ve been.
unlabelledView post →Wife had me put on Hereditary and fell asleep, leaving me to watch the heavy movie. A Mrs Beef classic which is also how I saw Reqiuem for a Dream, Precious, The Wrestler…
unlabelledView post →they should make a movie like The Wrestler but its about an old guy who has to go back to chugging soda on youtube for a living despite his failing health because its all he knows how to do
unlabelledView post →"Judy" also a good study in how a story can make a winner. It was sold as a return from actor exile. But Zellweger was doing fine! She'd just starred in the third "Bridget Jones" movie! Mickey Rourke's "The Wrestler" nom was slightly more of a comeback; he had steady work, it was just in b-movies.
unlabelledView post →There aren’t THAT many but what’s y’all’s favorite pro wrestling film I.e The Wrestler that tells the story of trying to make it?
unlabelledView post →Great looking Ed Asner figure (presumably from the film The Wrestler)
unlabelledView post →Cody is fucking hilarious. I remember a Hyrule Husky tweet that has been lost to time complaining about fans using “insider terms.” He then proceeds tweet “we get it, you watched The Wrestler.” Which he clearly never watched because none of that terminology was in the movie.

unlabelledView post →Feeling wacky. I just might make Mickey Rourke my 4-film rewatch topic of the week. Right now, I'm feeling... The Pope of Greenwich (84) Angel Heart (87) Barfly (87) The Wrestler (08) Subject to change...just a thought. #filmsky 📽
unlabelledView post →I basically detest Darren Aronofsky’s films with the exception of The Wrestler. However I will be seated for Austin Butler bumbling his way through whatever mess this Caught Stealing movie will be, partly because I’m a simp and partly because I love a crusty shambolic crime thriller
unlabelledView post →I remember hearing before about how Aronofsky had it in mind that he wanted to make a wrestling movie and a ballet movie, just generally, before making The Wrestler and Black Swan. Idk I dig the lack of specificity in that aim and approach writing the same way.
unlabelledView post →it still baffles me how underrepresented pro wrestling is in film, TV, and especially anime it’s this widely popular sport with such a unique behind-the-scenes dynamic. The Wrestler & The Iron Claw alone are two of the most emotional movies I’ve ever seen. we need more wrestling stories!
unlabelledView post →funny enough, Darren Aronofsky originally envisioned Black Swan and The Wrestler as one movie, contrasting the brutality of a high art with the beauty of a low art.
unlabelledView post →i think Darren Aronofsky is a good director who keeps trying to prove he's a great one, and it brings down every movie of his i've seen. (Except The Wrestler, I think, although it's been a while.)
unlabelledView post →My hot movie take is that Requiem for a Dream is dogshit. Reluctantly I will admit I liked The Wrestler a lot, but I’ve also been pretty meh on him otherwise so I also feel that sense of vindication.
unlabelledView post →I was at the LFF screening of THE WRESTLER where Darren Aronofsky and Mickey Rourke up on the stage got annoyed with each other and actually took a few swings at each other before they remembered where they were, talk about awkward. Anyway seems he's made another movie about irritating violent men
unlabelledView post →Aronofsky films, ranked: 1. The Fountain 2. The Wrestler 3. Black Swan 4. Pi 5. Requiem For a Dream ^^^ THESE ARE GOOD MOVIES ^^^ 6. Mother! 7. Noah 8. The Whale ^^^ THESE ARE NOT GOOD MOVIES ^^^ Noah is an atrocious movie but gets points for the genuinely impressive evolution montage.

unlabelledView post →I recommend watching Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan & The Wrestler as a double feature. He initially wanted to make one film about a wrestler dating a dancer & examining the effects what they do has on their bodies. They are deeply affecting films that are definitely in conversation w each other.
unlabelledView post →Wrestlesky and Filmsky Crossover Event! Building a list on Letterboxd where wrestling is the central point of the film, not films that just star wrestlers (thats another list for later lol). HMU with movies ABOUT wrestling, fiction or non-fiction! Have Beyond the Mat and The Wrestler already 🤼📽️🎥
unlabelledView post →"Wrestling movies do not have a good reputation." Looking at YOU, No Holds Barred. The Wrestler is a pretty dope movie, though. Dark Match is a *great* blending of wrestling mythology and horror jazz. AND we got Lowell Dean in the house? Fantastic! #TheLastDriveIn #JoeBobBriggs #MutantFam
unlabelledView post →If you Ever Watched Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler you’ll recognise pretty much the whole story from that movie was lifted from the bits in this about Jake The Snake Roberts
unlabelledView post →THE WRESTLER (2008) a film everyone could not stop talking about at the time that no one has thought of or mentioned since.
unlabelledView post →The Wrestler is a great movie, though
unlabelledView post →I feel like almost all of these midwits felt top-of-the-world important and stimulated during Twitters hayday and it completely rescaffolded their brain. They’ll never feel as alive as they did in 2017. You could make a “The Wrestler” type movie out of them but it would be too boring.

unlabelledView post →Just watched "The Iron Claw". The scene I'd heard about, the heartaching one? Truly well done, not a heart string left unplucked. Put this film up there with Aronofsky's The Wrestler. 🤼♂️
unlabelledView post →100% the right call on that. I dont know if you've ever seen that Mickey Rourke movie The Wrestler but there's a scene in that involving a deli slicer that genuinely gave me a nightmare and that I now think about every time I see one. Those machines were made by the devil lol.

unlabelledView post →My personal Darren Aronofsky take is that Requiem for a Dream is Reefer Madness with heroin, The Wrestler is an amazing movie, Mother is an allegorical stress dream rather than a cohesive narrative, and Black Swan is an entirely inferior ripoff of Perfect Blue.
unlabelledView post →Found a new Christmas movie I like in Tangerine, was too drink for Adaptation, wasn't drunk enough for Kraven, and rewatching the Wrestler will still fuck you up (in a good way). #Letterboxd #LastFourWatched #filmsky
unlabelledView post →The Wrestler movie kinda went in to this with the wrestler and stripper characters. Both tell a story with their bodies to attain a suspension of disbelief. Both professions tend to use up their workers physically and emotionally.
unlabelledView post →Always completely immersed because not since Mickey Rourke in Aronofsky's The Wrestler have we seen a movie powered by the sheer suspense of a man who might drop from a massive steroid-accelerated heart attack at any moment.
unlabelledView post →The Wrestler- Even though the lead actor is not Pro Wrestler, he did a pretty decent job of portraying one. Also, there are plenty of wrestlers in the cast.
unlabelledView post →The problem with “The Wrestler” is the noble nature of the promoter. It is almost like Amazon making a movie about Jeff Bezos declaring that he cares about his employees. As #FIFA demonstrated with the #worldcup, sports promoters with power are the most corrupt. #wrestlesky #filmsky
unlabelledView post →the only Darren Aronofsky film I have seen is "The Wrestler" which has been my default reference whenever I think of critically acclaimed misery that i resent being charged for ever since. I can only find two definitive instances of that on my dumb website, but I know I have used it on real people
unlabelledView post →So I guess this means that the Wrestler movie sucks retroactively
unlabelledView post →There is a THE WRESTLER-style movie to be made about classic rock DJs
unlabelledView post →I just want to pull this line out: “the audience for a quiet film about a wrestler on a losing streak simply doesn’t exist” Because this is basically “The Wrestler”. Of course the market is there for a “broken man’s attempt at redemption” movie when people know that’s the general plot.

unlabelledView post →Darren Aronofsky is also making a movie about the revolutionary war that is full AI… The director of things like Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Wrestler… and now he’s doing the biggest slop ever? Wtf is wrong with people
unlabelledView post →She was terrific in the movie The Wrestler. A really outstanding character portrayal.
unlabelledView post →An excellent film. The Wrestler (2008). Directed: Darren Aronofsky. Stars Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei. Rourke plays an aging wrestler who, despite his failing health and waning fame, continues to wrestle due to financial hardship and in an attempt to cling to the success of his 1980s heyday.
unlabelledView post →If I hadn't made a good film since The Wrestler then I'd probably be scrambling for ideas too but I don't think I'd debase myself and my craft as much as Aronofsky has lately. At least π is still good. Banger film. Love to be driven mad by maths
unlabelledView post →Film #127 for 2025 is The Smashing Machine (2025). This is a redundant film in every way. There's nothing here that hasn't been done with more art and insight in Raging Bull, Rocky, The Wrestler, or for that matter the documentary that it's based on.
unlabelledView post →Among other things, 'Warrior' grew directly out of the original Smashing Machine, and I would argue its influence is palpable in plenty of others, including 'The Wrestler,' a perfect movie.
