The Two Popes
Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict. Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. 60 of 133 · most liked firstWatched The Two Popes the other night. Between that, Conclave, and Wake Up Dead Man, we’re in a golden age of Catholicore cinema. Expected Two Popes to mostly be about Ratzinger’s decision to step down. Was caught off guard by the section about the Dirty War. Really good film.
unlabelledView post →Everyone has been talking today about the film #Conclave and rightly so. But the film everyone should be watching is The Two Popes, the most beautiful two-hander, in which two of Britain’s greatest actors Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce play Benedict and Francis: www.imdb.com/title/tt8404...
unlabelledView post →We watched CONCLAVE, which focused on Cardinals. Then we watched THE TWO POPES, which focused on Popes (two of them!). It seems only fitting that we finish our Papal Trilogy with THE AGONY & THE ECSTASY, a film about the previous movies' shared character: Michelangelo's mural in the Sistine Chapel.
unlabelledView post →dug Conclave but if you feel like that one's a little too fresh for a movie night rewatch, you could do a lot worse than The Two Popes. terrific jonathan pryce performance.
unlabelledView post →"The Two Popes" is an excellent movie for exactly this reason. It highlights the philosophical differences between Benedict and Francis. The stunning thing is that Benedict admitted that his views were wrong. The Church needed the humility and humanism Francis represented. Benedict stepped aside.
unlabelledView post →Sad news about the Pope. I'd always liked him, though that was probably mostly based on the movie 'The Two Popes'. Anyway, now is the time for the Catholic Church to become more liberal and my feeling is that there's only one choice. Archdeacon Latchico of Shropshire would shake things up a bit.
unlabelledView post →Loved the movie ‘Conclave’. Like ‘The Two Popes’, it’s made me want to be a Cardinal, or even a Pope (I’m being humble). How long will that take, considering I’m not baptised a Catholic? And will they accept a divorcee? I’ll be good at sermons but might struggle with some rules.
unlabelledView post →The popularity of Conclave suggests that the Papal Cinematic Universe (PCU) is going from strength to strength; it was revived successfully back in 2019 with The Two Popes, in which Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce played Benedict and Francis respectively. 4/5 film-authority.com/2025/05/16/t...
unlabelledView post →The Two Popes, by any metric, is a far superior movie.
unlabelledView post →The Two Popes. Fantastic film with two stunning actors - Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
unlabelledView post →The sheriff's "art project" was at one point a much longer scene. My favorite joke that hit the cutting room floor was there-- it involved a back-and-forth about the movie THE TWO POPES. #HotFrosty
unlabelledView post →THE TWO POPES (2019) is on Netflix and is really, really excellent, by the way, if you're looking for a conclave-season movie rec and you've already watched CONCLAVE (2024).
unlabelledView post →If you need a film for the occasion that's not "Conclave," "The Two Popes" flew totally under the radar and is excellent.
unlabelledView post →I remember Americans on Twitter "calling out" the fact that in the movie The Two Popes, Francis is played by a "white actor" instead of a "Latino" one.
unlabelledView post →#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched other than Missing, all new to me. Also watched The Two Popes, Merrily We Go To Hell, and Bullet Train Explosion, all new to me, as well. Only Cleo from 5 to 7 was a disappointment. Corrine Marchand is beautiful but I found her character uninteresting.
unlabelledView post →Have you seen "The Two Popes" with Hopkins and Pryce? Excellent film.
unlabelledView post →Ok. I was scrolling and damned if I didn't think this was Aziraphale and Crowley (didn't have my glasses on). It's not. It's Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce in a film called The Two Popes. I did think that wasn't the South Downs.
unlabelledView post →The movie The Two Popes is also a good watch.
unlabelledView post →The Netflix film 'The Two Popes' with Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins is really really good.
unlabelledView post →📽️ #MovieChallenge 2025 - Week 4 #filmsky #moviesky I watched 2 films this week! (yay me! 😎) Best supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph (2024 winner!) for The Holdovers. Best Supporting Actor: Anthony Hopkings (2020 nominee) for The Two Popes.
unlabelledView post →this sounds like a better movie than The Two Popes
unlabelledView post →Even for a dedicated atheist like myself, the movie The Two Popes moved me and gave me faith.
unlabelledView post →There’s a Netflix movie The Two Popes about this period. It’s probably far from the mark (in that it is too kind to Ratzinger) but it’s a damn good movie. You get the sense they made it in significant part because “holy shit Jonathan Pryce is a dead ringer for the pope”
unlabelledView post →I think "The Two Popes" might've been a better movie that "Conclave" but that feels like a hot take.
unlabelledView post →Rewatching The Two Popes… Everyone is talking about the Conclave movie again but I’d watch this first if you haven’t already
unlabelledView post →So @danielharper.bsky.social & I watched The Two Popes (2019) for a bonus IDSG and... it turns out to be a movie I could've written a book about but had a fair bit of trouble podcasting about...
unlabelledView post →Or just watched the movie THE TWO POPES on Nerflix. You get a hint of it there.
unlabelledView post →I have fucked to THE TWO POPES, literally anything can be a date movie
unlabelledView post →Seriously if you're catching up on Catholicism right now, The Two Popes is a way better movie than Conclave. The latter is a weird Hollywood fantasy about Catholicism; the former, an actual movie about the actual people who have been Popes and their theological differences.
unlabelledView post →Bad news, you were undercut by The Two Popes, a film with even more alive popes
unlabelledView post →Just watched The Two Popes again. Such a great, great movie. So relevant, so many lessons. Lest we forget history repeats itself… and great men, true leaders, must speak up.
unlabelledView post →I can recommend the movie "The Two Popes". I loved it. It shows the character of both men.
unlabelledView post →Was watching "The Two Popes". There was a section regarding a fascist coup in Argentina, aided by Henry Kissinger. I guess they're trying to use that playbook here & I'm not surprised it's our Karma. But, we're laughing at them and not complying and they are not succeeding. Keep it up! Good movie.
unlabelledView post →It's at least a *little* less actively frenzied than THE TWO POPES, thankfully. That particular movie felt like it was switching camera placement philosophies using oblique strategy cards or something every three shots.
unlabelledView post →The Two Popes is a very sweet film, and the very end, where they are watching Argentina vs. Germany in the world cup-final, the popes seem very human. As someone who is rather upset about the abuse-scandals in the church, it is a well-tuned movie because it made me empathise with Ratzinger.
unlabelledView post →Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell and Wagner Moura are teaming for a film version of Yasmina Reza's play, "Art." Fernando Meirelles ("City Of God," "The Two Popes") is directing and screenwriter Christopher Hampton penned the adaptation.
unlabelledView post →Dune! I have seen the Two Popes! But it's 2019. By the way, it distorted the characters of both but it worked really well as a film. However both Popes may have had a laugh if they ever watched it. I do like to think of them watching the football together!
unlabelledView post →If you're a movie buff, watch "The Two Popes," with Anthony Hopkins as Benedict and Jonathan Pryce as Francis. An outstanding film.
unlabelledView post →Catch the Netflix movie The Two Popes if you can. It's well done and interesting.
unlabelledView post →We’ve had lots of papal content lately from Conclave to The Young Pope to The Two Popes to The Pope’s Exorcist(‘s Bodyguard). Who should be cast in the inevitable movie version of The Chicago Pope?
unlabelledView post →An old movie that is a favorite of mine is Song of Bernadette. Takes place in France. My little sister is named after Saint Bernadette. I only saw the Conclave and loved the ending. You may want to watch the TWO POPES on NETFLIX.
unlabelledView post →I only just saw the film, “The Two Popes.” I really enjoyed it and came away having a much better appreciation for the life of Jorge Mario Bergoglio—aka Pope Francis. He was a great man, whose spirituality also contained elements outside of Catholicism. Anthony Hopkins was brilliant in the film too.
unlabelledView post →@caitlinlarkin.bsky.social Have you seen “ The Two Popes” on Netflix yet? Halfway through The Beatles and Abbey Road are discussed, then the closing credits - Blackbird! Very good movie!
unlabelledView post →Trying to think of Pope-centric movies and the only ones that came to mind were "Conclave" and "The Two Popes." A few more here, but not all are Pope-centered: www.theguardian.com/film/2025/ap... Now I really want to watch the Peter O'Toole version in "The Tudors"!
unlabelledView post →Was leading a meeting today and accidentally screen-shared the Wikipedia page for the 2019 film The Two Popes starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce as the two popes
unlabelledView post →I know everyone’s talking about Conclave for obvious reasons, but I HIGHLY recommend watching The Two Popes (2019) too. I believe you can still stream it on Netflix. It’s a film that has stuck with me in a way I can’t quite describe... and I’m not Catholic. 🤍
unlabelledView post →Now making my way through the Pope movie trifecta: Conclave ✅ The Two Popes (Pryce and Hopkins) ✅ and The Young Pope (Jude Law)….
unlabelledView post →Try 'The Two Popes' if it's still of Netflix. Such a good movie. Francis apparently liked to teach people, including Benedict, how to do the tango
unlabelledView post →Pope movie marathon commences: Conclave, The Two Popes, The Young Pope, The New Pope.
unlabelledView post →Until yesterday I legit thought “The Two Popes” was a movie about having two popes at one time
unlabelledView post →I know that people are talking about watching Conclave and the Two Popes but if you want to watch something actually that speaks to Pope Francis's papacy, you could watch The Letter youtu.be/Rps9bs85BII?...
unlabelledView post →Everyone is talking about Conclave (very good, I agree). I would also recommend The Two Popes. www.theguardian.com/film/2019/de...
unlabelledView post →I loved The Two Popes. An excellent film.
unlabelledView post →I quite enjoyed the film "Conclave" last night and Ralph Fiennes' performance is excellent.... But I think as Pope themed films go, I still prefer the film "The Two Popes" starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce . One fictional and one based on a true story of course ☺️
unlabelledView post →Agree. I went by default and ended up really liking it- especially the ending. I also just saw The Two Popes. That was an excellent film- it had a broader message beyond Catholicism.
unlabelledView post →There is a nice line in the film The Two Popes when Ratzinger says something odd and after a pause “it’s a joke. A German joke. It doesn’t have to be funny”
unlabelledView post →'Conclave' is perhaps one of the most visually appealing films I've watched. While some details were remiss (like Lawrence's Mass), the writing is more nuanced than in 'The Two Popes'. Overall, the film is a welcome addition to the convoluted conversation around the ordination of women. #filmsky
unlabelledView post →Ahh, really? I read the book and after I was done, I *definitely* was curious to know how the story would play out on screen. The plot can get visually “quiet” at times. But then again, The Two Popes was similar in that way and was a great film.
unlabelledView post →The Two Popes!! What a lovely film that is
