(a Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington, Annette Benning film about a terrorist attack on NYC that results in martial law). Every store was out of that movie that day. That's how I found out.

unlabelledView post →THE SIEGE is the kind of good movie you get when Hollywood is accidentally a lot more honest about America than it normally is. (On all levels, you literally couldn't make the movie after 9/11.) I am duty-bound to always shout out this video essay by @honorszombie.bsky.social: vimeo.com/420865434

unlabelledView post →When I was a kid there was this Denzel movie called The Siege. It was about the unthinkable... a major American city placed under direct US military control, with Feds arresting and interrogating people on ethnic profiling. Pure Hollywood fiction, right?

unlabelledView post →Happy #LetterboxdFriday My #LastFourWatched were mostly light horror. It was interesting revisiting The Siege to see how the events of the film (set in 1998) compared to what happened during and after 9/11 a few years later.

unlabelledView post →Ironically, Willis' character ends up being one of the antagonists of the film after the president refuses to follow his guidance and deploys the army to New York... and he takes some pretty nasty extra-legal actions. The movie is "The Siege," and it's one of my favorites.
unlabelledView post →Watching The Siege. It's not a happy feel-good movie. Nor should it be. And people should watch it, given where we are.

unlabelledView post →Final Thoughts: The Siege of Jadotville depicts a battle between Irish soldiers and mercenaries in the Congo in 1961. As a film, it is well shot, directed, and acted with excellent scenes. As politics, it rights a wrong as the Irish government tried to cover up the battle. Well done. #hatm

unlabelledView post →I keep thinking of that scene from The Siege with Bruce Willis and Denzel Washington (prescient movie btw) - about betraying principles to 'save' the institution. What are you saving then? That's the question I keep coming back to. (I'm not sharing a clip because it shows torture, dehumanization.)
unlabelledView post →That movie The Siege will be moved to the non-fiction category once the sleeper cells are activated, and just like the film, ice will start disappearing Middle Eastern people. I'm so tired of scump not being the one to find out when he fucks around.
unlabelledView post →I kept thinking about THE SIEGE in response to the "no movies about 9/11" article but this movie came out in 1998 and *prefigures* post-9/11 America so perfectly that I keep forgetting.

unlabelledView post →I watched The Siege during the Christmas break (expecting a pretty generic action thriller), and it’s crazy how that 1998 movie was prescient of the War on Terror in the 2000s *AND* the current timeline with an occupation of a US city… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Siege
unlabelledView post →Many years ago, i was a PolSci major at a prestigious university in Sydney, and wrote a thesis on what, at the time was a growing wartime phenomena known as "terrorism" this was around 1998, and my research referenced a range of sources from Edward Said to Film Criticism (The Siege) and the US DoD

unlabelledView post →Back on my New York movie bullshit! I've always been fascinated by THE SIEGE as both a pre- and post-9/11 NYC text, so it was a pleasure to chop it up with The Boys. Give it a listen!
unlabelledView post →Great conversation. Zwick along with Andrew Davis and Phillip Noyce made some of the great high concept mid budget political action thrillers of the 1990s. His 1998 film The Siege is, in my opinion, one of the great prophetic films about American foreign policy in the 21st century.

unlabelledView post →Not that anyone asked but I guess my biggest takeaway from the Doomsday trailer is it all feels so unearned. From 2008-2016, the MCU took its time to build excitement. Now every movie is a summer crossover event. At this point, I want nothing more than for them to introduce the Siege Perilous.
