60 of 196 · most liked firstI recently rewatched the Longest Day, the classic WWII film about D-Day; a crucial Panzer division can’t be sent into action to defend the beaches at Normandy until the Fuhrer gives the ok, but he is sleeping and nobody wants to wake him up. Was reminded of that here, for no particular reason

unlabelledView post →Last four watched… -‘Ice Station Zebra’ (1968) -‘It Happened Tomorrow’ (1944) -‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ (1947) -‘The Longest Day’ (1962) An engaging espionage thriller; two decent fantasy comedies; and an impressive, albeit episodic D-Day epic- It’s also the whitest WWII film ever! 🤦♂️
unlabelledView post →The Longest Day: a film in which the Americans are the heroes, the British are the comic relief, and the Canadians are ignored (shamefully).
unlabelledView post →They say whatever movie was #1 on your 10th birthday is how 2025 is going to go. Wish I had NEVER looked it up. “The Longest Day” Well shit…

unlabelledView post →My ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review of THE LONGEST DAY boxd.it/fB620H Absolutely massive, D-Day epic is monument to editing & film construction. Stunningly shot, spectacularly impressive from every technical standpoint. Who's who of cameos can distract & ambitious scope engaged my brain more than my heart. #filmsky 📽

unlabelledView post →I want a Star Wars movie in vein The Longest Day that’s just one epic battle from multiple perspectives. All Star cast. Jakku. Like the end of Jedi but the whole damn movie and no Skywalkers.
unlabelledView post →A 1962 original for The Longest Day. Love the block colour here. Movie posters often unheralded art.

unlabelledView post →Once my dad let me stay up to watch "The Longest Day" with him. The star-studded D-Day film from 1962. It opens with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and its rhythmic pattern. Three short notes followed by a long note was a symbol of Allied resistance. Morse code for "V" or "victory."

unlabelledView post →Actor Red Buttons once called it "the definitive World War II movie." But The Longest Day (1962) — a detailed documentary-like look at D-Day invasion — almost didn’t make it to the screen. More on the film here: cometoverhollywood.com/2024/06/06/l...

With several directors on location around globe & a huge superstar international cast, one of cinema's most ambitious war epics. Events of D-Day told from American, German, French, & English perspectives. #filmsky 📽

The retelling of the D-Day invasion, was a massive success and helped to recoup some of the losses from Cleopatra. Americans love War Films. #TCMParty #Cleopatra
unlabelledView post →Ironic that the title "The Longest Day" was given to a movie that celebrated our victories over the Nazis. Now the longest day exists to allow Trump to continue his tariff extortion scheme without interference by congress. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lon...
unlabelledView post →John Wayne is the most over rated actor ever. In every movie he plays the same person; John Wayne! Same voice, same mannerisms, no characterization. His character in "The Longest Day" could be the same guy in "She Wore.." I understand many Americans like that tough guy drawl, but it's not "acting"!
unlabelledView post →I'm watching The Longest Day on Film Four and have been reminded of the time BBC Scotland's Untied Shoelaces Show taught its young viewers how to draw a picture of Robert Mitchum. They certainly knew their target audience.
unlabelledView post →Today is June, 6th, D-Day. Each year, I watch the movie "The Longest Day" to remember the sacrifices of the Allies, the USA first among others, to liberate my country Belgium from fascism. Last year I didn't watch, nor will I this year. Not until this fascist regime in the US is defeated

unlabelledView post →something understood at the time but less so post-Greatest Gen cult. great depiction of this in THE LONGEST DAY, which you certainly would not call a revisionist war film or book. Two GIs walk away from a German bunker full of corpses, one asks the other "What do you think 'bitter, bitter' means?"
unlabelledView post →Okay #HATM friends. D-Day is upon us, and we’re starting The Longest Day tonight. I wish some of yall could join us…. Because all of Hollywood, British film industry and German dim industry were drafted. Why tonight ? We’re old and it takes us forever @herberthistoru

unlabelledView post →Here are some of my favorites. I'm an older guy so the films may be a bit dated. The Longest Day - the quintessential D-Day movie starring everyone that was anyone. The Devil's Brigade - a film that, in this era of tension between Canada and the USA, shows how we used to stand, fight, and die with each other. Sink The Bismarck - thrilling sea story about the hunt for the famous Kriegsmarine battleship by the Royal Navy. Only issue is that it characterizes the German Admiral, Gunter Lutjens,…
unlabelledView post →Apropos of nothing, one of my favorite scenes in a war movie is from a black and white WW2 film about D-Day called The Longest Day. In the scene a German general reviews intercepted US mail and declares Germany will lose because the cake a flyover state mother mailed her son is still fresh.
unlabelledView post →I have the original Dunkirk on Dvd. It's a masterpiece. The fact it is black and white makes it better. As is the case with The Longest Day. A Bridge Too Far is an incredible film too. So much so, I visited Arnhem a few years ago. Oosterbeek is a beautiful place. Very sad what happened there.
unlabelledView post →There’s a new Cleopatra movie in works. On Richard Burton’s birthday it’s worth recalling that he & chum Roddy McDowall got so bored of shooting delays with epic 1963 version in Rome that they paid for their own flights to film cameo parts in the D-Day epic ‘The Longest Day’.
unlabelledView post →Finished up The Longest Day (1962) this morning. It’s a bit of a comfort movie for me… if you’ve never seen it because it sounds like homework: 1) it’s got tons of light moments, 2) it’s got tons of cool cameos (basically every male actor of the period is in it), 3) the battle scenes are incredible.
unlabelledView post →Well that’s in keeping with the casting of the original epic D-Day movie, The Longest Day.
unlabelledView post →My Dad was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne who parachuted in to capture the town of Sainte-Mère-Église 82 years ago. His commander was Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Vandervoort, played by John Wayne in the movie "The Longest Day"

unlabelledView post →#DendensMovieDen. No. 124. The Longest Day. It became obvious to me fairly early into this movie that A Bridge Too Far followed a blueprint made by The Longest Day on how to make a WWII movie epic. While not as effective here as it was in A Bridge Too Far and (1/8)

In 1944 Todd was a lieutenant leading part of the wave of reinforcements at the bridge. He joked that his original role was cut from the script.

So grateful.

unlabelledView post →Can't they watch the film the Longest Day?
unlabelledView post →Still one of my favourite film facts is that Richard Todd played Major Howard in The Longest Day, and a random extra played Richard Todd as a paratrooper relieving Major Howard as he was actually there on the day.
unlabelledView post →Just off the top of my head, I think more people should see The Longest Day. Not just for the stand out 'actors in roles before they were famous' bits, but it's just literally every little weird story about the events of D-Day all mooshed up together into a film, and somehow it really works!
unlabelledView post →In the movie The Longest Day these got a nod: unfortunately they had the same sound as a German machine gun bolt being pulled…
