The Goldfinch grossed $5.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $4.1 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $9.4 million, against a production budget of $44–49 million. In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside Hustlers and was originally projected to gross $5–8 million from 2,542 cinemas in its opening weekend. However, after making just $870,000 on its first day, estimates were lowered to below $3 million. It went on to debut to just $2.6 million, the sixth worst-saturated opening of all time for a film playing on over 2,500 screens. Following its poor opening, many publications had already labeled the film a box-office bomb and estimated it…

60 of 64 · most liked firstI've been thinking about this a lot re: adaptations of literary fiction in general. They are often shockingly bad, simply bc it's difficult to capture the interiority--the character work, in which the prose does all the heavy lifting--on film. The Goldfinch? Embarrassing. Wolf Hall? Snooze fest
unlabelledView post →in the Goldfinch household as a child, we had periods where pokemon was banned, harry potter was banned, and every new movie had to go through one of those christian censor services, but I had a bunch of comics where I got to watch Archie Andrews inch closer and closer to a threesome??
unlabelledView post →We bought SO many books whilst we were in the UK. 11yo devoured Death Note 1+2 in one sitting and 13yo did the same with the final Heartstopper. 11yo now deep into The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, and 13yo deep into The Goldfinch (a v good example of the mere existence of a film…
unlabelledView post →The Goldfinch Husband & I noped out of the movie in less than 10 minutes. Husband still really wanted to read to the book & did a few years later. Then asked me to. I’ll call it the slowest DNF as a favor to him. Completely implausible. No empathy attachment. Couldn’t compel myself to finish.
unlabelledView post →i never saw the movie or read the book but the combo of imagery and dialogue and the perfume genius song makes this trailer for The Goldfinch really good.
unlabelledView post →I maintain that the Goldfinch movie was a failure because they completely misunderstood the tone of the book. Wes Anderson would have killed it
unlabelledView post →Now Watching: The Goldfinch!!! The book is better... but, who could resist Nicole Kidman?!?!? 🎬🎥🍿 📺📽️ 📼 #FilmSky #MovieSky #Movies #Film #NicoleKidman #JohnCrowley
unlabelledView post →Can't do a film, but I can do a book: The Goldfinch needs to lose the entire middle third.
unlabelledView post →Introduce yourself with… One book: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt One movie: Lord of the Rings - The fellowship of the ring One CD: Kind of Blue by Miles Davis One show: Ted Lasso
unlabelledView post →Watched the last hour of The Goldfinch and it’s left me in pieces. The film got a bit of a bad press from those that loved the book. Well I loved the book and the film. So there.
unlabelledView post →They’ve also broken several seasons of The Goldfinch, and we are pretending that the film does not exist, these students are amazing
unlabelledView post →I've only read The Goldfinch (and seen the movie). Really, really good. I also just read "The Remains of the Day". Saw the movie a long time ago. Still has me wrapped up in it. "Cloud Cuckoo Land" is better than "All the Light We Cannot See" imho, altho both wonderful. Books are the bomb!
unlabelledView post →Another book whose (bad) movie adaptation I've avoided because the book struck me so deep: Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch.
unlabelledView post →There is a book, then movie called “The Goldfinch” it doesn’t talk about it’s creator, it’s a novel about a boy who rescues the painting from museum. It’s a good read.
unlabelledView post →I can't believe the supporting actor from the worst book to film adaptation I've ever seen (The Goldfinch) is an indie rock vocalist now.
unlabelledView post →THE WIZARD OF THE KREMLIN is the second movie, after THE GOLDFINCH, starring Jeffrey Wright that wastes his talents entirely, and is so boring that I nearly walked out on it. Not what I expected to say of an Assayas-directed film with Jude Law playing Putin. boxd.it/ersqql
unlabelledView post →I made a little film this afternoon. I like the book The Goldfinch, so I cut some text from the first chapter to use. 💜 Trying to challenge myself to just make art. www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9F-...
unlabelledView post →Good point about the lack of film. But do try The Goldfinch, I absolutely loved that one. Oh the characters! I gather there is a film but have avoided it as so often disappointed by films of books I love. Their vision not as mine etc.
unlabelledView post →Todays movie: The Goldfinch
unlabelledView post →Amen! The Goldfinch needs a re-do; amazing book, terrible movie (you know it's really bad when even Jeffrey Wright can't save it).
unlabelledView post →The Goldfinch, and I would want to be reading it for the first time again without having watched the movie either.
unlabelledView post →This. The first time I ever had goldfinches in my garden amazed me. They outshined the sunflowers. And - The Goldfinch is one helluva novel and film.
unlabelledView post →I looooved The Secret History :) never watched the movie version of The Goldfinch, but I heard Donna Tartt was angry over the lack of input she was allowed despite being the author. One of many reasons books are always better 😅
unlabelledView post →This is how I learn there is a Movie of The Goldfinch. ... intrigued but also not (1/5th into the book, love it, therefore weary of film adaptions...)
unlabelledView post →I also really enjoyed The Little Friend. I mean a ten year old kid throwing a snake in the open top of a convertible? That’s just a solid plot. I liked the characters in The Goldfinch, haven’t seen the movie though.
unlabelledView post →🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 100% Reading the Goldfinch felt like watching a Guy Ritchie movie - starts off with a bang - things happen - new people keep entering the scene - and then everything comes together at the end. 10/10 would recommend
unlabelledView post →Donna Tartt is an author I associate with summer holidays. ‘The Little Friend started last summer’s reading. ‘The Secret History’ has been read a number of times already so I decided to revisit ‘The Goldfinch’. I remember being disappointed by the film and hope to rediscover and savour the story.
unlabelledView post →I was surprised too! I read they really botched the film adaptation of The Goldfinch and Tartt was nooooot happy so perhaps we will never get it haha
unlabelledView post →and The Goldfinch! The book is so much better than the movie.
unlabelledView post →I did have a look at what she was up to. She was very unhappy with the way The Goldfinch movie turned out and I think that took up quite a bit of her time. Maybe another one soon? It's the same with Sarah Waters, it's been 11 years since her last one.
unlabelledView post →Ahhh--arigatou for the tip, dear Ototo-san. Usually, reading a good book will disappoint the excited movie viewer. What comes to mind as an example??? Oh yes! The Goldfinch. Although I very much like Ansel Elgort.
unlabelledView post →Oh shit. Ummm…The Secret History I think? I believe it was her first published novel. Sorry it’s been a long time. And yeah, I’ve only heard terrible things about the film adaptation of The Goldfinch.
unlabelledView post →hey you told me you read and loved the Goldfinch, right? How did you fee about the movie? I know it was not well received by critics, but to me it read like a very adaptable story, though I didn’t think that much about it. Anyway, ai’ve refrained from seeing it, don’t want to meddle with my memory.
unlabelledView post →I will never get over them making the Goldfinch a movie and not this.

unlabelledView post →I usually don’t mind a movie. But there are exceptions. For instance, I will never watch “The Goldfinch” as a feature-length film. It took me 30 hours to get through that book, and some filmmaker thinks he can tell that story in 2 hours? No! That movie was doomed to suck.
unlabelledView post →Someone’s already mentioned it, but The Dark is Rising please. And I’d love an Alex Garland adaptation of The Secret History, but of course Ms Tartt isn’t allowing anything after the film version of The Goldfinch (which I purposely avoided bc awful/Elgort)

unlabelledView post →I watched the movie adaptation of The Goldfinch, and since I haven’t read the book I can’t tell the extent of which it likely butchered it, but I found it surprisingly entertaining. The homoeroticism of Theo and Boris’s relationship feels like classic Tartt, I can’t wait to read the book now.

unlabelledView post →it's a shame the movie of The Goldfinch was apparently not good but it's also not a surprise - so much of that story is in the long, languid details and the textures and characters that have so much time and space to breathe. A two hour film was always going to struggle to capture it
unlabelledView post →It's difficult watching The Goldfinch movie, after having read the book. Although, if you hadn't read the book, I don't know how you could take anything away from the movie. It's a shame. Read the book.

unlabelledView post →Same reason I watched the Goldfinch movie, so it’s successful enough that they make a Secret History movie
unlabelledView post →yayyyy 🥰 the Goldfinch does have a really good male friendship throughout and also a movie (which isn't great, but sometimes that doesn't matter?) i grabbed a sample of 'Confidence' from my library!
unlabelledView post →Agreed. Just consider The Goldfinch. Loved it even more than The Secret History. It was more mature, more developed…just better all around. But the film of the book…not great.
unlabelledView post →36) Favorite movie Titanic! Followed by Mamma Mia, Peter Pan (2003) and The Goldfinch.
unlabelledView post →Reading “The Goldfinch” atm, it’s so long so I’m considering dnf ing the book and watching the movie🧍 I used to read a book a day as a kid idk what happened😭
unlabelledView post →I really don't see why this got quite such a kicking from the critics. Ansel Elgort, Jeffrey Wright and Nicole Kidman put a good effort into a tale that hinges on the impact of one single, tragic, moment in time and of the subsequent consequences. The characters visibly evolve throughout the film and it flows in an interesting and absorbing fashion. It is a wee bit too long and perhaps some more judicious pruning of the original - rather lengthy - book might have been in order. That said, the…
