The Fly
Industrialist François Delambre is called late at night by his sister-in-law, Helene, who tells him that she has just killed her husband. Reluctant at first, she eventually explains to the police that he invented a matter transportation apparatus and, while experimenting on himself, a fly entered the chamber. From TMDB

Beautiful and horrifying. I know a lot of folks on here dislike or hate it. But I adore it. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/nosf...

unlabelledView post →Happy 40th to THE FLY, a curiously seminal film for many a Film Freak Central contributor. I believe it was in his MIRACLE MILE book that @mangiotto.bsky.social talked about having the film recorded on audio cassette and ritually listening to it, which flummoxed Cronenberg when he told him.

Stoltz brings heart to the tragic son of Brundle’s legacy as science once again runs amok. Wet and gruesome with a surprisingly emotional core. The ending is better than you remember.🎞️📽️
unlabelledView post →Now rewatching THE FLY. There's so much good about this movie, but this time around I'm struck by the nice subtle makeup effects in the first and second acts. Brundle starts to look a little sickly and gross even before the horror really kicks in.

Sunday evenings on BBC2, Alex Cox would introduce the audience to the weird and wonderful cult classics, such as The Fly, Brazil, and Q - The Winged Serpent. unlabelledView post →I watched The Fly and was cute to find comments from guys who framed the fly guy™ as a victim when to me the movie was specifically about the woman and it can be read as a film about how nerdy dorky men who are perceived as inoffensive end up replicating patriarchy, like in gaming communities.

A body horror motif emerges from the more cerebral scientific original particularly with the 86 film. 👤⌯⌲🪰 #booksky #filmsky

I watched him transform over the months into an alien being who was still my father. THE FLY is the greatest film ever made about watching your loved ones grow sick. A masterpiece

unlabelledView post →Just watched The Fly II (1989). I’ve heard a lot of (reservedly) positive things about this film lately. And I can see why it gets only tepid praise — it completely abandons the tone and gravitas of the first film, and becomes a cheesy B-monster movie. But it’s a REALLY GOOD cheesy B-monster movie!

unlabelledView post →Cronenberg's THE FLY is great, but Kurt Neumann's 1958 film is much better than you might expect. Different, but in its own way just as horrific. Also, a sad fate for Dandelo the white cat - though not nearly as ghastly as in George Langelaan's original story. See my book CATS ON FILM for details!
