**HOLY FUCKING SHIT** - I genuinely don't know why I've never watched KINGDOM OF HEAVEN before now - but having just finished the Directors Cut, I can confidently say that it's Ridley's second best film after THE COUNSELOR.

I was honored and thrilled to write for @southwestreview.bsky.social about a film that is both Ridley Scott's vicious genre morality play and Cormac McCarthy's soap opera of the Grand Guignol -- THE COUNSELOR. Buy a subscription (cheap!) / cop the issue (even cheaper!) below.

Javier Bardem - 📽️ The Counselor (Ridley Scott, 2013) The film is bleak even for a Cormac McCarthy story and often baffling or incoherent, but Bardem (along with his wife Penélope Cruz) completely understands the type of huge side characters it needs. His seductive disco boogie is the highlight.

I just don’t think late career sloppiness undermines the work you already did. He could retire with his legacy secure (made The Counselor in 2013) or he could make a whatever that dog stars movie is and another dozen David-themed Alien spinoffs.

Ridley Scott's The Counselor has like 50 or so defenders I'm one of them. Brutal, bleak, absurd, a movie about the drug war monster eating its feeders and exploiters (aka Americans and America itself) alive.

A movie that feels like this but actually was intentionally made this way was Southland Tales. The Counselor (which is going viral with stan Twitter rn) is this 100% though. John Carter is another example. And as much as I love The Wachowskis, Jupiter Ascending.

I might quibble with some of the ranking, but I mostly agree. THE COUNSELOR is one of the most striking examples of a film where the Director's Cut is a significant upgrade — same with KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and NAPOLEON, I believe.

Re-re-watched THE COUNSELOR last night, which is a movie made by people convinced that cinema can only contain two kinds of scenes: people giving long and meandering speeches about the state of the world and everyone in it, and people having their heads cut off

Stan Twitter somehow got ahold of Cameron Diaz' admittedly ridiculous yet very brooding final speech from the Ridley Scott 2013's cult classic The Counselor, and it became a meme (even though the movie is about a drug deal gone wrong a bunch of named characters get killed in horrific fashion lmao)

The Counselor (2013) - script by Cormac McCarthy, directed by Ridley Scott. Superb cast. Very, very bleak. It's a really good movie, IMHO, but the plot, and especially the ending, is SOOOOOOO fucking depressing, I watched it once, and I don't think I'll re-watch it. But it was good.

Did I miss the "Cormac McCarthy sucks" cycle after that VF piece dropped? Because he really does. Everything he writes is terribly overwritten. The Road read like a parody of his style. That said, No Country for Old Men is a terrific movie and The Counselor is a truly batshit one (complimentary).

Wyatt Earp - the Kasdan/Costner movie. Looooove it. The Counselor - Ridley Scott & Cormac McCarthy & Cameron Diaz has sex with a windscreen. Ali - Do people love this yet? The opening 20 minutes is the best filmmaking of Michael Mann's (or anyone's?) career. Soderbergh's Solaris. Over Tarkovsky.

Re-watching Cormac McCarthy + Ridley Scott's THE COUNSELOR (2013). IMO an absolute "Horror film." Malkina stands next to The Judge as one of McCarthy's most primal antagonists. Many shat upon it for its misanthropy & nihilism but that's nothing new for McCarthy. The end remains DEVASTATING. #FilmSky

I'm not an especially big fan of The Counselor, possibly because they didn't stop and extract all of Cameron Diaz's footage and repurpose it for a Bond film for her role as the lead villain. Look at this stuff. People would have gone apeshit to see her do this in a Bond movie.

Definitely worth studying McCarthy himself, as I think he's largely responsible for the modern revival. Beyond the obvious examples, the book and film of All The Pretty Horses are in conversation with each other in interesting stylistic ways, then you have The Counselor, which I definitely count.

By then I'd seen Saw, A Serbian Film, Martyrs etc. But such a gruesome death scene from an A-list director directing an A-list Hollywood star? WTF? It's just not what you expect to see. Ridley Scott makes about five bad movies for every good film. The only good ones he’s made since, 2010, is The Last Duel and The Counselor. It’s quickly gaining consensus that Tony Scott was the true steel in that family. Like The Counselor could have been great if Tony directed it as opposed to ok
