The Cider House Rules
Homer is an orphan who was never adopted, becoming the favorite of orphanage director Dr. Larch. Dr. Larch imparts his full medical knowledge on Homer, who becomes a skilled, albeit unlicensed, physician. But Homer yearns for a self-chosen life outside the orphanage. What will Homer learn about life and love in the cider house? What of the destiny that Dr. Larch has planned for him? From TMDB

I wondered why they had made a television show based on a drama about WWII and orphanages, and why so many gays were into it, but thought it would be impolite to ask.

They had another movie with a major cast, based on a classic book, from an Oscar winning director. And they did nothing in Oscar hype for it.

Strong recommend, even if it didn't, well, touch on the scenario you've described.

There are good performances throughout and I’m delighted Caine picked up the Oscar although again I think he has other performances more deserving.

Was not at all prepared for how much more interesting the book's plot was. John Irving's such a good writer it irritates me. There's a clean prose/messy plot dynamic.
