And I’ve continued that tradition - so every year on January 11th I go see a movie I think she would have wanted to see. Today it’s The Choral.

Saltaire and Salts Mill featured quite a lot. I had listened to Kermode and Mayo’s review of the film but I wasn’t prepared for how emotional the final scenes would be.

Ralph Fiennes leads The Choral in a Yorkshire town decimated by the First World War in this drama written by Alan Bennett, that's strongly acted but has too many voices in subplots competing to be heard. youtube.com/shorts/mK3kn...

neutral · AI labelView post →Thought that Ralph Fiennes WW1 choir film THE CHORAL might be a nice parent-friendly film to watch. Anyway, we’re all now watching a one-armed soldier pressure his tearful ex-girlfriend into giving him a handjob because he “can’t do it properly” with his left hand

neutral · AI labelView post →Trailers (came in late): Christy, The Housemaid, The Choral I don't think it has helped the film commercially that it carries a 15 rating in the UK and an R rating in the States, purely on basis of having quite a few f-words. I think this will find an audience eventually, though.

In 1930, a world roller skating endurance record was set there. Last year, it featured in Hytner/Bennett film The Choral.

neutral · AI labelView post →Blue Moon is a fascinating movie I absolutely recommend but also if you can find a way to watch @mistresscurvy.bsky.social react to being personally attacked by the trailer for The Choral first then it will really elevate the experience.
neutral · AI labelView post →If you call a movie THE CHORAL, and you cast Ralph Fiennes as the conductor, and you tease St. Matthew Passion (which makes me cry) in it, you’re just cooking a movie in a lab precisely for me, hope you realize. 🎶🎵

negative · AI labelView post →J and I just got back from seeing The Choral, in The Ritz, the lovely little independent cinema in Thirsk in Yorkshire. I enjoyed the film, helped by Alan Bennett’s clever and poignant storytelling, and the lead performance by Ralph Fiennes (plus some great work from the supporting cast). One of the cast members popped in (unscheduled and a real surprise for the volunteers who run the cinema, it seems) and did a wee introduction at the start! In other news, it is raining in Yorkshire. A lot.…

The Choral is an achingly beautiful yet warmly witty film that reminds us how much we need art, poetry, music + each other. I am nostalgic for Jubilee Church Hall in Marple Bridge and our village plays + concerts! #filmfestival #thechoral

neutral · AI labelView post →Watched The Choral at the cinema on Saturday. Extremely emotional by the end and a very fitting film for Remembrance and our current turbulent times. Owen's anger was supremely well-placed. Alan Bennett's quiet wit and narrative powerful too. Go see it if you can. The singing is beautiful too.

neutral · AI labelView post →I am halfway through The Choral It’s a nice enough movie, in a masterpiece theater-y kind of way but it’s so veddy British
neutral · AI labelView post →The Choral is on Netflix. It has the same writer and same director as The Lady in the Van, a film starring Maggie Smith I really love. This one is pretty good. I had hoped to see it in the theater at Christmas, but didn't get the chance. The other two are German and Finnish/German films (on MUBI).
positive · AI labelView post →The Choral was a bit of a mixed bag of a film. Screenplay by Alan Bennett, written and directed by Nicholas Hynter. The plot was all over the place. Acting was 'Sunday Evening Drama' standard. If you haven't seen it, listen to Elgar's Dream of Gerontius first which features heavily in the film.
