Kudos to Jim Cameron & @galeannehurd.bsky.social & everyone who worked on this restoration. The 125th St crowd in Harlem loved it!
unlabelledView post →Say what you will about Cameron now, but Cameron in the 80s and 90s was at the top of his game. The Abyss is such an underrated film and a technical achievement of logistics to such a degree the mind boggles at the lengths to which they went to make it possible.
unlabelledView post →The 1/8 scale Deepcore miniature from the movie the Abyss. This was shot "dry for wet". Meaning it was shot on a stage and water effects were added in post. I'm in the gray hoodie doing a weathered wash on it. This and several other models were made at Design Setters, 1988/89. #miniaturesrule

Shot underwater for real, called the toughest shoot in movie history, almost killed Ed Harris & Cameron. And it’s a romance about a divorce. youtu.be/7cCVYAcIIAo?...

It’s how emotional it is, it’s all about a divorce put under pressure, and the movie never ever loses sight of the actors & relationships.

unlabelledView post →Submarine movies are a vibe, not a subject. For example, The Abyss (1989, dir. James Cameron) takes place almost entirely on a series of submarines on a mission to locate a submarine while being observed by aliens in submarines. Yet, it's not a submarine movie.

unlabelledView post →I watched The Abyss (special edition) yesterday, on the giant (but not IMAX giant) Embassy screen, and i cried only twice (2 times). It’s a hardware sci-fi movie that is very pro-gentleness and anti-toxic masculinity and a staggering* achievement of practical film effects. *recklessly unwise

unlabelledView post →james cameron from the 80s has always been a "fuck you, I'll do it myself" guy, though to his credit he often does then actually do it himself, to the point that he wore concrete boots in The Abyss to weigh himself down in a giant tank so he could film the underwater scenes
