Funnily enough, I own a Russian-made game that covers the Syrian Government's fight against ISIS. "Syrian Warfare" came out in 2017 and is a RTS that lionizes Russian Special Forces and the SAA's "Tiger Force" operating around Palmyra/Damascus. It's virulently pro-Assad/Putin, implying 1/2

Squad 22: ZOV, a Russian strategy game, doesn't hide the fact that it's Russian militarist propaganda. But before that, there was Syrian Warfare, a Russian-developed pro-Assad agitprop released in 2017, masquerading as a real-time tactics game. Not sure why I wrote this review, but here it is.

1/ Not the first time we got something like this from Russia with hate. In 2017 publisher Cats Who Play published "Syrian Warfare", a real-time tactics game set during the Syrian Civil War. While it is a genuinely good RTT, its plotline is an unashamed pro-Assad Russian propaganda.

2/ This isn't the first time Russian are amking a gaming agitprop. Last year, it was "Zov 22", approved by the Russian MoD and the Yunarmy. Before that, Cats Who Play released "Syrian Warfare", an unabashed pro-Assad, Russian imperialist pamphlet. serbianism.com/2025/10/10/r...

Slitherine previously also published the Terminator RTT by another Russian studio, Cats Who Play, who made propagandistic Syrian Warfare then still actively ongoing war. They struck a deal before war, and then brazenly lied how they got another studio to work on game while CWP posted updates on VK

This game is from people who made "Syrian Warfare", so disinformation is their bread and butter.

The biggest videogame success of specifically Russian propaganda, is probably "Syrian Warfare" (originally titled "Syria: Russian Storm"...). It is: - still on Steam - claims to be based on real events - completely misrepresents those - is good enough of a game that it has defenders abroad...

I have the same misgivings about Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance. Devs made the very pro-Assad game Syrian Warfare. Which is a gigantic shame because the controls of Terminator were fun. pretty easy to pirate though.

I've been playing Terminator Dark Fate Defiance for the past few days, and honestly, it's not bad. Competent RTS, if difficult. The interesting part is that it was made by the same studio that made Syrian Warfare, which is a Russian propaganda game, and that bleeds through into this game too.

At least Steam lists Gostomel as published by Cats themselves, which is par for the course as they also previously published Syrian Warfare, another propagandist game. This is what Slitherine told me when Terminator demo came out:

Of course the Syrian Warfare devs made a game about the VDV in Hostomel.

It's not quite as obvious as with Syrian Warfare, which literally made levels out of propaganda headlines and made the Spetznatz virtually immortal super-soldiers. The new studio obviously sanitized it - the game was removed from the Russian studio when sanctions landed - but it's still there.
