Superliminal
Developer Pillow Castle
Superliminal is a 2019 surreal puzzle video game released by Pillow Castle Games. The game, played from a first-person perspective, incorporates gameplay elements around optical illusions and forced perspective; notably, certain objects when picked up can be moved towards or away from the player, but when placed back down, scale to the size as the player had viewed them, enabling the player to solve otherwise… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

It was a good idea holding off as long as possible before buying. For those wondering the two games are Superliminal and Squirrel with a gun.

unlabelledView post →Idea: Someone could make a game like Halflife, mixed with Superliminal but in the Star Trek universe and you get trapped in nested holodeck simulations and the safeties are off... Think Inception, but cool Star Trek shit.
unlabelledView post →5. Superliminal - a VERY charming Portal-like based entirely on optical illusions. not sure if the framing device works, but the game explores every avenue of the central concept within its three-hour run time. many "surprise laughs" generated by this one

unlabelledView post →When this game first came out and after received the “Most Innovative Gameplay” award on Steam (over Death Stranding), I felt a strong antipathy toward it. Perspective-based illusions never felt impressive to me (especially) in digital environments, because digital worlds don’t have fixed physical rules to begin with. Plus, other games had already explored similar ideas, and Superliminal looked like an extra layer built almost entirely around a single concept, perspective, without expanding or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not for me. I get why a lot of people love this game. It's well made and the perspective scaling can be a lot of fun. I just expected a competent puzzle game and that's not what I got. Every challenge boils down to, make big, make small, and/or find the right angle, which I don't find fun. I went in with the expectation of this being a puzzle game that uses perspective mechanics. What I got was a tech demo showcasing a bunch of cool ways to use perspective in a game and the same puzzle 50…

Through its inventive puzzles and clever design, the game effectively conveys its central philosophy of “thinking outside the box,” constantly challenging players to rethink their perception of reality. While the game carries a strong Portal-like atmosphere, it does not explore…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Actually, on the subject of first person games that aren’t shooters; if you want a fun little experience you can probably polish off in an afternoon, Superliminal is first person puzzle game full of dream logic perspective puzzles and moody jazz piano that makes for a fun little package

unlabelledView post →Do you like Portal? What about The Stanley Parable? This game combines both - the surreal surroundings from The Stanley Parable with the puzzle element from Portal. The puzzles are hard to describe - look the game up on Youtube to get an idea of what you can expect. All puzzles have a logical solution (although one involving an endless hallway wasn't immediately clear to me, and made me resort to a walkthrough for the first time in many, many years).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is as if Talos Principle and Superliminal had a baby. I think it's rewiring my neural pathways.
unlabelledView post →Anyone else here played Superliminal? I gave up on it at first because it felt like a slightly same-y Portal-esque type game but returned to it today to find it really opens up into something very satisfying and totally mindbending! Really cool indie game that I can definitely recommend.

unlabelledView post →The game felt like a mix between The Stanley Parable and Portal. Puzzles are primarily about manipulating an object to make it bigger or smaller and figuring out how to use it. It was a short experience but a good one.

So, January is: Castlevania IV, Superliminal, Tactical Breach Wizards, and Super Mario 64.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Original first-person puzzler relying a lot on perspective and angles, but not just that. Incredibly smart and mindbending. What an experience! It was frustrating by moments, I was stuck quite a few times, but the journey was worth it. There was stuff I never saw in any other game before. Attractive graphics with simple polygons and detailed objects. I really liked the radio communications by Doctor Glenn Pierce. I don't like preachy endings, but this one worked for me and offered words of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Superliminal might be good as someone's first narrative-driven puzzle game. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who takes puzzles OR narrative-driven games seriously. Note that it's not a bad game — there's nothing outright wrong with it. The bad impression it left on me was more of a combination of multiple mildly annoying factors. The main gameplay mechanic is admittedly a lot of fun to play around with. Some of the puzzles are quite clever, and while they do reuse gimmicks a lot, the same…

About a 3rd of my playtime is from working on the speedrun, which was tough but fun to work towards. I'm proud to have accomplished it but man it is so cool to watch pros do it way faster. There is a small touch of a creepy element but nothing that can harm you.

unlabelledView post →I beat a game! I completely forgot about Viewfinder after its announcement until it was added to PS+ this month. I love a good puzzle game and the way this game plays with perspective. It reminds me a bit of Superliminal, another underappreciated puzzler. Spoiler-free +/- review to follow!

It's a game that delightfully toys with your perceptions, perspective, preconceptions, and expectations; and I unexpectedly loved it. You can't even trust the loading screens! I'm so glad to have finally #JustBeatIt. @polykillpodcast.bsky.social
unlabelledView post →Short but fun. Played it through once about 2 years ago, decided to play it again. It's nice to relax. Once beaten, challenging yourself to beat it in under an hour seems totally possible, even if speed running games isn't your thing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →interesting and fun game, very unlike most other games I play. The developer commentary was very cute and refreshing, very humanizing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's wild that there's a game out there called Subliminal and they just grabbed the narrator guy from Superliminal to do basically the same role like I get it, the opportunity for a bit was right there and you absolutely -have- to take it, lest it be lost forever

unlabelledView post →If you are a Patreon subscriber, there's a bonus episode on Superliminal, a game where @kaly.bsky.social and I try to change our perspective on how we approach the idea of evaluating a video game and also I clip outside of the boundaries of the game's stages accidentally.
unlabelledView post →Superliminal is one of the most creative puzzle games I’ve played in years. The entire game is built around perspective-based puzzles where the size and position of objects change depending on how you look at them. What starts as a simple gimmick quickly turns into some genuinely mind-bending puzzle design that constantly makes you rethink how space and perspective work. One of the best things about the game is that it keeps introducing new ideas before the mechanics become stale. Every…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We've seen real humans make some wild non-euclidian shit with game engines already (e.g. Superliminal, Viewfinder) so if someone puts in the effort we could get a game that really captures that non-continuous dream-like feel (though I'd argue Superliminal already does that pretty well)
unlabelledView post →Honestly did not expect to get that emotional punch at the end. Loved this game, the puzzles are trippy and fun and I enjoyed the sense of whimsy with a hint of creepiness.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels like an homage to Portal but unlike many games of this genre the mechanics of Superliminal are mostly standalone and don't combine to create interesting new puzzles. Some levels are prone to becoming a dull game of "find the item that I can click on" and the game can be inconsistent about which types of objects can be interacted with. But that's all the criticism. The story is charming and satisfying (when it finally starts to come together) and the game is chock full of interesting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The title seems overconfident. I mean, it's Prettygoodliminal at best.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was so mediocre, I think it is a very overrated game. Neither the puzzles, nor the narrative struck me as super clever, while the game seems to be confident to really "blow your mind", with the way the narrator talks to you. The music mismatched the pace of the game, at several points where you will try to figure out the rooms puzzle, there will just be tension building drums in the music like its an action scene, Its not a bad game, but damn 19€ is mad overpriced for this 2h mediocre…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Superliminal is a clever and stylish puzzle game that constantly surprises you. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, loved the message it conveys, thank you for the developers for encouraging us, the players, to realize the meaning of perception, it goes true beyond just games, it affects our daily lives and even our health.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Superliminal. This is a game that I'm sure got prototyped fairly easily and then was bugfix after bugfix after bugfix from the collision issues alone. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xCB...
