Shrek (2001) is one of animation’s great game-changers. The irreverent fairy-tale spin worked so well DreamWorks rebuilt huge chunks of the film after Mike Myers decided Shrek needed a Scottish accent, costing millions but giving the character his soul.
Shrek (2001) sounded like a disaster on paper. A Scottish ogre, a motor-mouth donkey, and a story built on mocking Disney. Instead it flipped the fairy tale formula on its head, even winning the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
