Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon
Developer VINE, Yacht Club Games
Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is a roguelike puzzle game co-developed by Vine and Yacht Club Games, and published by Yacht Club Games. A spin-off of the platform game Shovel Knight, the player takes control of the namesake adventurer as he becomes trapped within a magical artifact, the Pocket Dungeon, and is forced to fight his way out while battling other knights who befell the same fate. Gameplay is set on an 8x8… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

unlabelledView post →This game's CRIMINALLY underrated! It's an absolutely fantastic puzzle game! (and by puzzle game, I mean in the vein of Tetris, not Portal). There's SO MUCH VARIETY in here with the DLCs now. Every character plays so differently, they each have 4 extra ways to play them, there's tons of options to play the game exactly at the difficulty you want, you can mix and mash hats with different abilities... it's really staggering, in a good way If you like Threes, Tetris, 1024, Puyo Puyo, Lumines, or…

unlabelledView post →IDk man maybe I just don't get it (feels like it!) but it feels like this game has a core mechanic that feels "juicy" but they never figured out the gameplay. The tooltips tell you to take your time, the enemies move when you do! Except they also move on a timer. The weird mashup of movement + timer, the ability to choose 'roguelike' or 'puzzle' mode, the myriad of adjustable game loop components like # of lives/etc - makes me think they just didn't figure out the "best" way to play this and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review during the Free Weekend event. I’ve had one Shovel Knight game but I didn’t realize it was a franchise until now. Pocket Dungeon is essentially a match-3 game, you can attack single enemies, but when enemies of the same type are grouped together, one hit can hurt the entire group. The game is in real time, meaning enemies continuously fall from the top of the screen. Despite the lack of rhythm mechanics, it reminds me of Crypt of the NecroDancer in terms of style and features like…

unlabelledView post →If Tetris was the system seller for the Game Boy, then Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon should be the same for the Steam Deck. It’s just perfect! Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find yourself playing again and again. The sound and feel are excellent, the gameplay is addictive, and there’s tons of content. The difficulty is balanced just right, making it endlessly replayable.

unlabelledView post →Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon is an action puzzle masterpiece. In many ways, the game is right up there with the master of this genre, Tetris - and I really don´t want to say this lightly and have a couple of points about why I think that. What is "action puzzle" about it? Well, at its barest, its a game about quick pattern recognition, a little bit of mental math ( only when you know your character approaches low health ), and optimizing the speed at which you can do both of these things to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This a project I've abandoned, picked back up, and reworked many times but haven't gotten it to a place that feels good yet. It's something of a cross between Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and Tetris Attack. I think it has potential, so maybe one day I'll figure it out! #indiedev #madewithunity
unlabelledView post →Recently been playing Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. A combination of puzzle, roguelike, and Shovel Knight. And it’s honestly so good! You play by controlling your knight character in this 8x8 grid where you need to hit the enemy blocks to clear them. You need to prevent the grid from being filled…
unlabelledView post →Very unique puzzle game I can only describe as a crossover between Puyo and Dig Dug, wrapped up in a hub-based roguelike. Your character is physically present on the board, needing to navigate falling blocks that are mostly enemy units with unique characteristics. To destroy enemies, you must sacrifice your own HP to deplete theirs -- ideally in chains, which will damage all matching units at once. This requires you to tactically recover your HP by seeking out potions that are also falling…

unlabelledView post →What a bad game. Yes, it's beautiful, but who cares when it's not fun? It's not a puzzle game, it's not an action game, it's not a roguelite (even if you try to force everything down the player's throat to make it seem like one). Skip this one.

unlabelledView post →The weird hybrid of real-time and turn-based puzzle gameplay just does not work, which is such a shame because I love the Shovel Knight look and series, and like the occasional rogue-like. But they either needed to lean in on the puzzle aspect and make it turn-based or real-time. Combined just makes it completely unclear whether the game is intended to be played quickly or slowly. It rewards you for playing quickly, but in my experience with it it is far too random and punishing to actually…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely enjoyable experience. Reminds me of Kirby's Avalanche on the SNES. Has an absolute ton of replayability. Should be considered in the upper-echelon of roguelikes.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What can i say about this game that people probably already haven't said? Yacht Club Games never disappoints in bringing great fresh and new experiences to the table, and they didn't miss with this one! Their partnership with VINE surely paid out, I'm a huge puzzle game and roguelike/lite fan, two of my most played games are both The Binding of Isaac and Tetris, and this game is an almost perfect mix between the two genres (even though the roguelite aspects are minor compared to the puzzle game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pocket dungeon is without a doubt in my top 3 shovel knight entries alongside king of cards and specter of torment. It's crypt of the necrodancer baby mode and its also on crack, let me explain. The game arms you with an arsenal of different characters from which almost every single one of them has an unique gameplay style. This only gets magnified when you realise that each character also has a second form with an even crazier quirk that most of the players dont even unlock, but why? Pocket…

unlabelledView post →Fantastic roguelike. So many characters (2 abilities for each character!), a ridiculous amount of content, great customization, and super fun challenges. Definitely a uniquely designed game that can have a learning curve to get into (focus on getting keys to open chests if you are struggling) but the characters unique abilities and experiencing the Shovel Knight universe in a new way makes this game really fun.

unlabelledView post →The game is great, tough other then the characters, its not really a Shovel Knight game. The gameplay is great and there is a lot of replayability (tough if you didn't liked the gameplay in the first 119 minutes then just refund it.) as the replayability comes from (very) different characters, (22) 36 abilities in total. edit1: I forgot to mention, there is mod support and some great mods.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So much fun! What a hidden gem
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoy the gameplay itself but this is a roguelike. Maybe that's my fault for not reading enough about it but it's not clicking for me in a game like this. More modes would solve this problem for me but as of now there's that mode, two player, a daily, and a weekly. As it is now though, the roguelike formula they've used here just doesn't fit in my opinion Edit - this game isn't advertised as a roguelike in the store, regardless of someone saying it was advertised as such, nowhere that I can…

unlabelledView post →Super underrated! It's really tricky to get your head around, but once I started thinking about chaining enemies as managing my health as a resource instead of something like Puyo Puyo it started to click. It can be difficult and frustrating at times, but the game has a ton of options to modify the gameplay experience if you're more of a novice or want a more relaxing experience (though I'd recommend trying to see how far you get playing with the default stock settings!) The pixel art is…
