I'm gonna be straight up right off the bat, don't buy this game if you aren't prepared for a lot of unfair combat and a fair amount of frustration. This is a modern re-release of a game that comes from the era of old school trial by fire. It doesn't care about being fair, and it doesn't care how many times you lose. If you want to know more, read on. The biggest issue that this game has is unfair enemy behavior. You'll often find yourself spamming punches and kicks, that in any other game…

I don't really recommend this game in its current state, since there isn't really much for it to offer than the two script options. As for the game itself... The translation creates a false dichotomy where the game makes you choose between two English options. You have English (Original) and English (RCG). In plain terms, one is an actual attempt at localization and the other is a cynical phone in that is truer to the premise of the original game but EXTREMELY cynical. If you know any…

If any release exemplified Wayforward's tendency to attach to an existing franchise and deliver a halfassed product, it is this release right here. To start with, this is NOT a "River City Girls" game, so those of you who don't know a thing about the franchise's origins and are expecting another romp similar to that title are going to be hugely disappointed. This game is nothing more than a simple translation patch for an ancient Super Nintendo game, and I'm not at all making that part up --…

While the original Shin Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio-tachi no Banka is an oldschool beat 'em up masterpiece, its rerelease as "RCG Zero" is the definition of tone-deaf. For Kunio-kun purists, who love this game for its Japanese delinquent/yanki/bosozoku culture aesthetics and amazing plot which gives it that yakuza film feel, this is a miss, because the new cringey "RCG" content is being an eyesore which heavily breaks the immersion and the serious tone of the original. Plus, the official English…

A modern day re-release of the last entry for the Nekketsu Koha series in the Kunio-kun franchise placed into the River City Girls spinoff series. This release was a split project between WayForward who handled all of the translations & newly added visuals wrapped around the game with Limited Run Games handling the original game itself. WayForward chose to take this project on as a way to serve as an origin story for Misako & Kyoko's playable debuts in the franchise with many of the events &…

The translation is good, the new cutscenes and extras are good. But I kind of expect a bit more from Wayforward remakes. For example, the Wonder Boy series was an amazing, super-responsive remake with original and updated graphics. If you didn't go out of your way to switch to retro music and graphics, you wouldn't even know the game was as old as it was. That remake polished an old classic and showed how great the source material was. But look at this trash. I mean, this is the same company…

Probably the reason this never got ported to other regions is because they realized it is a very bad game. Do not go into this expecting it to be an improvement on River City Ransom, it is a step backwards in every conceivable way. Gone is the buttery smooth combat of the NES version. Movement and attacks are jerky, unresponsive and — worst of all — unreliable. You will lose count of how many times you try to do a particular move and the game does something else. One of the worst…

How come I'm the only person reviewing this thing? Anyway, no beat em up should take an hour of cutscenes to just start playing and the audio is delayed by like 20 seconds, making it almost unplayable. I really like some of the Kunio-kun games and both river city girls but can't recommend a poorly-made port. The intro is very pretty and the cutscenes seemed promising but not enough to spend money on this.

Okay, look. I'm not COMPLETELY against rereleases that are just emulated. At least if they bother adding extra things like sleek menus/UIs, standard emulation features, or cool extras. Mega Collection type stuff. I don't HATE the game itself. And it's cool that they added extra cutscenes, those look absolutely GORGEOUS with WayForward's usual animation magic. ...But WHY in the name of everything that is good is this rerelease lacking basic features like being able to remap your controls??? First off: There are 2 possible translations possible in English. An original adaptation to make it flow better with river city girls 1 and a new one which is a close translation to the Japanese. The devs listened to feedback and provided extra options which is to be commended. What is this game? This is a very old school brawler. This was a "graphical update" from the nes sprites of the original and I the only game in the "kunio" or "river city ransom" series that seems to use these sprites.…

Enemies are way too stronger than player characters, and like other players noted, game play is absolutely unfair. While you can give them 2 punches, they can easily throw you back 4 punches AND a couple of stomping. Extremely tough to play and simply just irritating. Game system is also messed up and easily get confused at how to figure out how to restart the game at where you were left off. Also, there is not option to change the screen setting. Almost there is NO setting you can change in…

You might be checking this game out because you played and loved the mainline "River City Girls" games, which are awesome. Alas, this one has nothing to do with them. In terms of story, although it's kinda neat to see where these characters originated from, this is explicitly an "in-universe videogame" and so not canon - you miss nothing by skipping it. An adorable game that leaves a warming, nostalgic feeling with you upon finishing. Do note that this is pretty much the very base game from the original with just some slight tweaks in the settings, translations and cut-scenes, so with it, comes incredibly difficult gameplay that is pretty barebones, a difficulty spike that infuriates you, and a challenging game due to how simple the controls are, making combat that much more complex- in a way. I wish I could rate this as a "meh". The main game itself isn't that bad, it's a tough as balls SNES game where the CPU has a total advantage over you most of the time so you have to cheese them, which works with everyone except the bosses. The story's actually pretty okay, the River City Girls localization isn't an issue at all. The big issue is with the frontend itself; no way to remap controls, a really weird savegame system where you have to save and quit (instead of just saving), over 4…

A decently alright, if frustratingly difficult Super Famicom beat-em-up wrapped up in one of the WORST emulators I have ever experienced. Or at least, I think it's the emulator, this could just be a bad port issue but it is still an awful experience because of these technical issues. The game itself is a great idea, bringing forward an official translated version of the game that pretty much inspired the River City Girls games to get made. The story bookends uses River City Girl's manga style…

This one's only for the River City/Kunio die-hards and the history-curious. It's a repackage of an old 16-bit Japanese-exclusive game, and the gameplay just isn't that great. The original game "Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka" was released in 1994, yet the gameplay is somehow is more primitive than the original Final Fight from 1990. A poor port of Kunio-tachi no Banka, wrapped with a River City Girls UI/Theme. Not a great port. Emulation is missing basic QOL features, and the port itself has issues (sound, control). Bonuses are two translations (a self referential one, and a more "faithful" one), a manual scan, and some decent animated intro/credit sequences. Even with all it's flaws... I absolutely adore the original game, but you're really better off just "playing" this elsewhere.

There are two main reasons to play this game: an interest in game preservation or a sincere love for the River City series. RCGZ does faithfully bring back 2D Brawler action of the 90s, complete with clunky movement and graphics of the time period. The music is fantastic and the dialogue is fun, whether it is 90s camp or leaning hard on the fourth wall. This said, the difficulty and clunkiness of controls do not make it a great time to play. Old School beat 'em up, won't recomand if you are used to only modern games since these kind of games tend to be janky and not smooth for the modern standards. Little fun fact: it emulates a set of NES games ROMS and if you go to the game folder and swap one of the SFC files with another game for the NES it will just launch it. You can even put those said ROM into a potable console if you have one and nobody gonna complain since you paid for them.

River City Girls Zero is a fascinating release precisely because it exists at the crossroads between eras. Although WayForward packaged and presented it as part of the River City Girls line, the game itself is a 1994 Super Famicom title—Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka—localized for the first time and introduced to audiences who may know Kunio, Misako, Kyoko, and Riki only through their modern reinterpretations.
