60 of 88 · most liked firstMan, uh, clicking that "No" under "do you recommend this game" was a difficult thing to do. But it's the truth. The visuals, the music, the voice acting, the script (sometimes), the characters, atmosphere, set and setting -- all of it is S-tier work. Truly top notch. I expected all that, and am especially receptive to it, because I love this type of stuff. Specifically *this* stuff. VA-11-HALL-A is one of my all-time favorite games. 2064 was an unexpected hitter for me, and really knocked me…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to be honest. I really really wanted to like this game. I had incredibly high expectations for it since 2064 set the bar really high. I don't think this game lives up to that standard or even what some may have come to expect from Midboss. Here's why. - The story is a bit of a mess. Its lead in is compelling enough with some promise to have interesting mechanics as the runtime pans out. Yet that isn't really maintained throughout. As soon as the third chapter hits, things really…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have no insight into what happened behind the scenes with this game, so I won't speculate, but I will say something must have happened. This game starts off strong and then takes a pretty clumsy tumble thereafter until it faceplants during the finale. The game looks great. If you enjoyed 2064:ROM like I did, you'll love the familiar setting and characters. I didn't expect it to be a carousel of visiting different characters from that game, though. By the time we visited TOMCAT I felt fatigue…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this not too long after the first Read Only Memories was released. I streamed it and I think played through all of it in one sitting. I never hesitate to recommend it when someone's looking for a comfy, good modern FMV game. Loved Rupert Booth as detective Frederick Jenks. Extremely charming!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I came to this game super excited for a followup to Read Only Memories. I adored that game, it was wonderful. Turing was adorable, I loved the diverse cast of characters, I loved the intrigue the story had, it was a wonderful time. This game seems entirely focused on grabbing on that nostalgia, dangling a handful of characters from the original game on screen in front of you and smacking you with them. There are a grand total of eight characters in this game. Half of them are from the first…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i probably didn't brag enough about directing the vo for Read Only Memories: NEURODIVER and Kitstune Tails, partially because as a game developer myself I wouldn't want to act like what I did was a fraction as important as the engineering & art. but for the record i kicked ass

unlabelledView post →Disappointing as a fan of the original Read Only Memories and borderline insufferable as a person who has not constructed her entire personality around Liking Anime. And if one looks past all that, well, there's not much left, is there? The demo was a strong start that had me looking forward to the full release hoping maybe we'd (neuro-) dive a little deeper into all this esper business, but the plot never thickened from there; instead, plucky Sailor Moon wannabe ES-88 dragged me along for an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted a trip to the past, but the memories were too heavy by the end I've seen some other reviews sharing the same story: it's with a heavy heart that I have to push a negative review on a game I anticipated for so long. Let's rewind a bit: Neurodiver is a sequel (or at least, a follow-up) to Read Only Memories, originally released in 2015 after a successufl Kickstarter. While there might be criticism to be found in that game, it gathered some attention and touched many people, myself…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine waiting seven years for a game that's less than half the length of the first game and also more expensive. Well played Edited because I was kind of upset when I first wrote this. After thinking about it for a while: The game feels like the first third and ending of a longer, more fleshed out game. Every puzzle is basically trial and error; bashing your head against a wall until something happens. The story starts off interesting and then the characters are talking about a “finale”…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reviewing as a fan of 2064: ROM and have been looking forward to this game since it was announced. Game clearly went through development hell because it is a mess. It starts off alright and proceeds to go nowhere. Really unremarkable game play even by visual novel standards and the puzzles never evolve to anything interesting in the slightest. Character writing is weak. You really don’t get to know anything about the supporting cast and for a game that plays around with philosophy, you don’t…

unlabelledView post →This game is a stand alone story set in the Read Only Memories universe. You do not need to have played the prior game to enjoy this one. If you are totally new to the world of ROM I would actually suggest starting with this game and then going back to the first game if you enjoyed it. For someone exploring the ROM universe for the first time here is my ideal suggested order: Google “READ ONLY MEMORIES COMIC READ ONLINE” to read the out of print comic or buy it if you can find it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's really pretty and fun for the first few chapters but peters off in writing towards the end. The characters from other games are not like themselves at all. Have you ever seen that picture of a horse drawing where the front half of it is a fine, realistic sketch and the butt is a child's scribble of a horse? That's this game. I would watch a playthrough instead.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kinda mid as a VN, really disappointing as a long-awaited sequel. Neurodiver has none of the appeal of the first game, all of the characters from the original feel like completely different people (because they were written by completely different people), and the game is so short and simple that it doesn't really get to flesh out the things that make it unique either. 2064 didn't need a sequel badly enough to justify wasting time on this.

unlabelledView post →This game is so cool, truly. The narrative and characters, the music and presentation... 2064 Read Only Memories is both fuelling me and inspiring me as a creative/game dev as well as entertaining me. I just may be in my visual novel era. They're perfect Dad games too I guess lol
unlabelledView post →Beautiful pixelart and a wonderful score, but suffers heavily from a lack of focus. Neurodiver waffles among trying to be a character study, trying to be a mystery VN, and trying to be a love letter to 2064: Read Only Memories, and all three suffer as a result. ES88's 'development' is hamfisted and unsatisfying, the game's main plot is on very clear rails, and returning characters are just sort of there (infuriatingly, even when major decisions are involved). Go in without expectations, and…

unlabelledView post →2064: Read Only Memories is a great game. It hit the themes of a cyberpunk dystopia in a way that truly resonated with me. The game mechanics are also varied and fun. Not to mention the diverse and interesting cast of characters! Great work, @midboss.com. I'm definitely going to play the sequel! ✨
unlabelledView post →Quite disappointing when compared to it's predecessor. The edinding feels like it came from no where and leaves so many things unexplained. Reoccurring characters are a shadow of themselves and the new characters are somewhat less compelling. On a positive note the pixel art is beautiful.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Barely anyone who worked on ROM 2064 worked on this and it shows. The subtle sci-fi themes and satisfying detective story from the first one is totally absent. I can't believe I'm refunding the sequel to my favorite adventure game of all time. What a disappointment.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful art, but the characters don't really have much personality. The characters from the first game are different in this game. Also, the ending was a let down and I'm pretty disappointed. It felt like they couldn't decide what to do with the Big Baddie and so there were just loose ends everywhere.

unlabelledView post →This is a hard review to write. I was incredibly invested in the 2064: Read Only Memories, but I found that this story does not compare. As many other reviewers have stated, there is a point in the game where the soul of the game was missing. I found myself very bored at certain parts of the game, as it felt very repetitive. I really wanted to give this game a good review, as I was looking forward to it. I'm just disappointed how delayed the game was as compared to it's quality. If there's an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been waiting for this game for 4 years and I have to say... it really disappointed. As has already been mentioned, there are major quality errors I found on my first playthrough (seriously—no QA on this?) vox normalization is terrible, some characters are inaudible voice lines are not matched with the script linux version hangs on exit and needs to be force quit conversation sprites render before text boxes, and don't disappear from the background when presented in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game but very short... Pros: - Interesting story - Interesting characters (though you really don't get much time to know them) - Artstyle - Jess Cons: - Very short game, takes around 5 hours or less to complete - Vocals are not normalized well, characters go from super quiet to very loud in the same scene, often. - Vocals and character portraits constantly mismatch, lines will be playing and halfway through the talk animations will just stop. Sometimes dialogue does not match what is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the writing was much more stronger than the original Read Only Memories, but the game is shorter, which is a trade off. The game also mostly relies on a lot of the previous game's characters, which isn't bad, but I do wish the characters in this game could have been fleshed out further too. That said, I think it's a solid game and was a great time. In an age where I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less, I think this game is exactly fine…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm so heartbroken. I loved 2064 and the beginning of this game was wonderful and I was absolutely sucked in, but the ending is so abrupt and lacked the gravity and complexity of 2064. It's a shame, because the scenario they cooked up could've had so much more depth, and I left with questions about Minerva's shady side that I felt like should have been answered. It's also much shorter, I left no stone unturned and finished in 3.6 hours.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have quite a lot to say about NEURODIVER. Some of this could be considered SPOILERS so I wouldn't recommend reading if you want to play blind. ND feels like a shell of a game, with an underdeveloped story, puzzles, and characters. The story mostly revolves around ES88 helping people, most of which are characters from the first game, with fixing gaps in their memories. As several other steam reviews have pointed out, you do not need to play the first game as this game has it's own story.…

unlabelledView post →This game has nothing going on for it. The art surely has improved, it's fully voice acted just like 2064: RoM and we get to see characters from that game again (Turing <3) but the new cast is just meh and I didn't find the gameplay very engaging. Also this game is so much shorter than RoM, which leaves a lot to be desired regarding the plot. It's very disappointing to leave this review since I really love RoM.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can only recommend this game to people who liked 2064: Read Only Memories so much that they are desperate enough to try anything related, and even then they should be ready to be disappointed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know what they were thinking here. The first half of this game feels great like you're getting stuck into a real detective mystery, getting to know some really promising characters, then the second half of the game is completely disjointed and rushed and feels almost like it belongs in a different game. Nothing that is set up in the first half is even relevant in the second. The soundtrack is great but I can't recommend the game otherwise.

unlabelledView post →Throwing a positive review here because I DO think the game is worth your time, when viewed on its own. If you're a diehard enjoyer of 2064 and are viewing this as a direct sequel, you will likely find it lacking- but viewed on its own, or as supplemental to 2064, it's a great time and worth your energy. Fun MCs, beautiful art, and an easily digestible run time make for a highly enjoyable VN, and it's fully voiced to top it off.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From old to new. While Read Only Memories and NEURODIVER are really colorful games, I primarily work in black and white or limited colors if needed when doing normal non-pixel illustrations or exploring logo design. Wander will actually be in black and white in-game as it'll be on classic Macintosh.

unlabelledView post →Its not a BAD game, but that ending was so lacklustre. sure it was neat lore wise, but that game should gave had another 2 hours to it at LEAST. The art and design, plus the game-play itself is solid, but it feels like it was never finished, with placeholder VAs in a bunch of places, and an under developed story. i did truly try to like it, i did, but its just not good.

unlabelledView post →Man. Man I wish there was a 'middle of the road' option for reviews. I liked the vibes of ROM: Neurodiver, but the game felt way too short and nothing felt conclusively wrapped up in the end. It's a fun romp, but definitely get it while it's on sale. It hurts to downvote a game I've been eager to play for half a decade, but here we are.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was Not worth the wait. It wasn't exactly bad but it also wasn't good, or fun. Didn't even get close to the level of writing that 2064 had. The characters were boring and the story was poorly paced, not to mention exceptionally short. It didn't feel very special. Whereas the puzzles in 2064 had multiple solutions and were more complicated than just "click everywhere and then click at the goal", Neurodiver was the latter. Not to mention it seems the only two "endings" come down to a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I had to really pin it down with a description I'd say that Neurodiver is a great start to a story that I'm very eager to get more into. Which makes it frustrating that (as far as I know) this is it? Maybe I'm wrong and there is a mixed media approach to this story (i.e. comics, or maybe a light novel that I haven't come across yet), in which case I'd be very happy to read those things as well - because I like the characters and the world that is here. I played through the original 2064,…
