I'm honestly too busy... literally shipping the game to start actively looking for work, but I'll be looking for my next gig in December. 🥲
unlabelledView post →Heart Machine is one of my favorite indie studios. Hyper Light Drifter in particular is a special game to me for being a deceptively sincere, emotionally resonant, and deeply immersive experience despite its ostensibly esoteric presentation. Solar Ash is a sensational sensory experience and comes closer than almost any other game to feeling like a true spiritual successor to Shadow of the Colossus. So my disappointment with the issues facing the studio is palpable. I had a bad feeling that…

I helped organize the first videogame union in North America in 2021, I am addicted to coffee & I love to photograph flowers. 🖤

unlabelledView post →If you are looking for a game where the gameplay will hook you, this is not going to be it. You are better off playing something like Silksong or Constance. I think the main appeal that this game is trying to have is it's art, and story. The art, I love. Color scheme is great and I'm a sucker for some like "deviant-art" type drawings. The story is ... not for me. It feels very fanfic-y. Like the sort of thing that would appeal to like the young adult romance crowd. It's SUPER on the nose…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will say it now, the game is not bad, but not amazing, I'll try to get my point across through pros and cons of the game, and since I only played for 3 hours you can take this with a huge grain of salt. Pros: + The artstyle is phenomenal, really can't complain about it. + The soundtracks are really good too. * The movement is awkward at first but once you get the hang of it feels pretty good, along with using the traversal skills to get to point A to point B. + There are a variety of…

unlabelledView post →UPDATE: Since I originally wrote this review the devs have patched two things I pointed out, that being that they added whip indicators to the walls with growths on them as well as fixing all the shelves in the Campus area so that they don't get stuck anymore. I commend the devs for patching these so promptly but for the other reasons I've mentioned in my review it's still sadly a thumbs down for me. Just do be aware those two particular things aren't issues anymore.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First impressions are very solid, gameplay is so much better compared to the Next Fest demo, Soundtrack is amazing as well, and the Story is very charming so far. Will update when I'll finish it but for now it's a 8 Review after finishing the game: Gonna immediately start by saying that this is Heart Machine's best game ever since Hyper Light Drifter (I haven't played Solar Ash yet so I can't compare it to that) (and while not being better than Drifter, this is the closest they reached it in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a few weeks late to posting, but I still can't believe Possessor(s) is out & actual people have played the game. I'm proud of what we made & honored that I had the opportunity to art direct something that I think is so cool & special with such a talented team. Here's some art I made for it.
unlabelledView post →I really enjoyed Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash and I'm a big fan of metroidvanias, so I thought I would like this. Unfortunately, after several hours, it just doesn't want to click with me. What I don't really like: - The combat doesn't feel satisfying or fun - the attack animations for enemies are awkward (there's little to no start-up animations on a lot of attacks), and the "platform-fighter-inspired" elements just amount to being able to somewhat juggle enemies, and, overall, it just…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So let me open with the fact that I think the story in this game is an absolute gem (with a caveat!) wrapped in a very very unfinished product. Non-spoiler about the story up-front: Giving a player choices without differing outcomes is plain bad, especially when in the first few minutes that your head-mate characters are likely going to be at odds, then the story otherwise very explicitly sets a loaded gun on the table and it's pretty clear it was going to be an option for one or the other to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a *good* metroidvania but it's tragic how easily this could've been a *great* metroidvania and it just, isn't. Like, I think the writing is fantastic pretty much the entire way through, the way it becomes obvious both Luca and Rhem are victims of a toxic codependent relationship with someone who doesn't respect them at all & seeing how they both deal with that, the way they bond over it even as they fight, it's compelling stuff and generally every important character feels fleshed out.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved hyper light Drifter, as well as solar ash. I heard about the layoffs and decided to buy this game day one to support the devs, but I can't in good faith advise others to purchase this game. It is fundamentally broken. I've been stuck inside walls several times (requiring progress loss), had enemies get stuck in walls or objects, and worst had a boss float away into the ceiling and get trapped in FIRE that hurt me trying to get him unstuck. Then after taking damage from the fire trying…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright, i have a lot to say, but let me ask you a question first. What do you prefer in games? Do you prioritize the art direction, atmosphere and story, or prefer gameplay and mechanics? If it's the former, then sure, you can give Possessor(s) a go. The artstyle is unique and expressive (and the main reason why i got the game), the character and enemy designs are really nice, the story is simple but quite alright and is told with comfortably simple writing. There's also a bit of character…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pour one out for Heart Machine, the studio behind Hyper Light Drifter. They imploded catastrophically, but their final game - the gorgeous metroidvania Possessor(s) - is good stuff and going very cheap now. All their other finished games (including the underrated Solar Ash) are cheap too.
unlabelledView post →Heart Machine is a great studio. Hyperlight Drifter was a near perfect game and this feels like a return to form. I can already tell his has a lot love and passion put into it. The art is stunning and the movement feels great. Hyperlight Breaker may have been a rough one, but Heart Machine is a studio I do not want to see go away. Give this a go if you like metroidvanias.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is like a downer song that means a lot to you personally, but you understand why nobody else likes it. (But you secretly think everyone else kind of sucks and is wrong about it.) Recommended for: 1) Melancholic folks who find sad stuff strangely comforting and uplifting. 2) Metroidvania fans who want to play another metroidvania, even if it's not "THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME." 3) People who like 99/100 games they play. Someone who isn't picky, and enjoys overcoming different…

unlabelledView post →Man... i am loving the banter between the characters, and i love the artstyle. but the QOL in this game is just absolute buns. BIG maps and you can only teleport to certain areas. LET ME TELL YOU, this is a backtracking type of game if you wanna cover the ENTIRE map and get all the collectables. you will suffer and its like dark souls like. BIG YIKES. i wish the dev had put a LONGER demo out for everyone... bc wow... i would have NOT bought it. its a SHAME bc i was enjoying myself till all…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I fail to understand the all good reviews. Combat is just bad, platforming is not good, story is meh so far. Where is the fun? I thinkl people want to like this game becouse it's Heart's Machine, but lately the studio is just not delivering.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It breaks my heart to write this, but I can’t recommend Possessor(s) in its current state. It has a lot going for it: an intriguing scenario, decent writing, striking art direction. However, the fundamentals of what makes this genre satisfying just aren’t there. The traversal feels clumsy and unsatisfying, especially the whip swinging - how could they make that feel so sluggish? Also, why did we need an “interact” button to climb? It’s long established that “up” is the climbing command in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There was so much passion and good ideas that went in to this game. you can feel it. The pacing is fast and the world is very fun to explore
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At SGF Play Days I spoke with Heart Machine devs about Possessor(s) and how they hope it teaches people ot break abusive relationship cycles. And of course how anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and DanDaDan influences the game.
unlabelledView post →Another one of those "If only Steam had a meh option on reviews" kind of games. I wouldn't call Possessor(s) bad by any means, it's main detriments are the lack of "quality of life", unclear instructions, often too easy, and post-game content. There were little moments that just kept building up and irking me, mainly transitions between major regions. There is one absolutely egregious example when climbing up a wall, the game hits a loading screen, your stuck spamming the jump button in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disappointing is the way that I would sadly describe this game, all of the promotional material leading up to its release looked very promising but the delivered product falls short. All of the art work is amazing, the pre-release animated trailer, the in game character art, the 2d character sprites and the concept artwork all look phenomenal but the actual 3d environments are drab and uninspired from both a visual and traversal perspective. Another issue is that the game sells itself on the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have a lot of mixed and complicated feelings about the final package that Possessor(s) is as of launch, some good and some bad, but through all of that I think what I feel most of all is that I have gotten to play what may very well be the Swansong of Heart Machine as a studio. If you want a meaty Metroidvania or Search Action game to sink your teeth into and become and instant classic, this may not be it, but I do feel it has some incredible things going on that you simply won't find…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Where to begin? It's a solid metroidvania, with a fun moveset, varied enemies, and stellar level design. I had a lot of fun playing it. But you can tell its rough edges. Character portraits vary wildly in their detail and diversity of expression. Cutscenes are ambitious, but lack movement. At every seam you can see the shadow of a bigger, more ambitious title shining through. I don't know what exactly was going on at Heart Machine, but I know they were developing Possessor(s) in parallel…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Possessor(s) First Impressions: + Reminds me of the fun I had while playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist + Really enjoy the aggressive combos you can pull off in combat + Love the character designs + Love how you can explore the different areas in this game
unlabelledView post →The game makes it a point to tell you that demons can Possess just about anything, yet you've seen every enemy within the first hour or so. With areas such as a mall with endless possiblities and an aquarium it was really boring to see the exact same enemies in both. It's just hours and hours of the same enemies you've fought before with rooms getting more annoying the further you progressed. The art direction and some boss fights were cool, but that's about all it has going for it. I think…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a bad game. You play as Luca, a college girl living in some near future dystopia, an apocalypse strikes, her friend dies in front of her and she has her legs blown off. Desperate, she makes a pact with a demon, who gives her new legs and super powers. Together they explore the ruined city and try to solve its mysteries. The combat is kinda basic at first, they start you with the dual knives which are spammy but deal little damage and have no hitstun. But it picks up once you get the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful, incredible story and characters, and it's a really well made metroidvania with cool combat. Obviously the artstyle and designs are the best, expected from the devs, every important character have some really good and emotional expressions, and the whole aspect of turning everyday objects into enemies, weapons and tools is interesting. The combat is varied with weapons and modifiers, not really easy but the moment you get the hand of it, the flow of each battle is very satisfying,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"The next game from the creator of Hyper Light Drifter is a Toonami-core anime throwback set in one of the most interesting Metroid-style worlds I've seen in a while." High praise and even higher expectations from @pcgamer.com ! Possessor(s) will definitely deliver.
unlabelledView post →I really like the rough edged inky look that jjk had going for its energy, but we wanted to go for simpler shapes for our game, so the large black base with colored 'core' ended up being our look~ Wishlist Possessor(s) on steam~ <3
unlabelledView post →You can tell they had to cut off development way way too early. Its a great game for the first couple hours but many of the enemies are reused and there just isn't much to do. The story doesn't really go much of anywhere and the characters go in loops again and again. At least the art is good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game but there are sadly way too many problemes for me to give it a good review. I finished it and also started some side quests but finished only 2 out of 5/6? Pros: Story is serviceable, not amazing but also not awful The setting is quite nice The combat can be fun once you get a few upgrades and get in the flow. The 3D environments work really well Very nice 2D illustrations for portraits. Character design is very nice CON: The main character Luca is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →---See where this game landed on my Metroidvania Tier List beneath this rec!--- This game has been improved a bit since it launched apparently - I found it to be quite enjoyable! It's somewhat in the vein of F.I.S.T. and Kotama and Academy Citadel. The game has some 'beat'em up' influence in the combat system, which is fairly straightforward and quite fun. You can juggle the enemies a little bit and after you inflict a number of attacks, enemies get stunned for a while. Enemies have a fair…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a continuous sucker that regularly buys aggressively mediocre metroidvanias (Afterimage comes to mind). I am always too stubborn to quit in the first two hours and get my refund, but i typically get roughly twenty hours in and realize that the entire time I was having zero fun, zero joy sparked. When i think to list the positive aspects, they are never things that stand out and spark that joy, they are always just things that could be worse. im in the final stretch of the game, and i just…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For those who are curious, Possessor(s) is my 30th completed 2025 game! The story, the art, and the music of this indie is a dark trifecta because of how much they compliment each other so beautifully in a doomed city. unlabelledView post →I wanted to like it, but between the non existent enemy variety, 0 difficulty balance where you can instantly wreck a boss but some weak enemy 1 shots you, and they very poor fast travel placemnt its just annoying to play. Great art is here, good combat, cool enemy design, cool character design, large beautiful world, great movemet ... but just dosnt translate into a game that feels finished. Feels like a demo with a map 10x too big. The fact that collecting upgrades does nothing, and you have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished Hyper Light Drifter and jumped straight into this. First impressions are good. Compared to HLD, it’s less cryptic and dreamlike, but the setup is really interesting and the visuals, nonetheless, are gorgeous. Combat starts out pretty basic, but you can already feel it’s going somewhere — there’s potential for real depth and rhythm. What stands out the most, though, is the atmosphere and presentation: the worldbuilding feels both melancholic and colorful, in that same way HLD…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Highly recommend. Luca's a lil ♥♥♥♥ and I love her. For the game itself, Possessor(s) rewards exploration, backed by great movement and solid combat mechanics (spiking an enemy into a floor hazard feels especially rewarding). The dev team have done one helluva job making each space look distinct yet feel like a seamless transition through this corpo-demon apocalypse. The 90s tech creature designs and character art for Luca and Rhem are incredibly gorgeous. The dev team should feel proud of…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a like, sorta recommend option. This game needed some more care to make this a great game, I understand that this studio has been going through a lot lately and working in games myself I know how tough it is to do all this. It really feels like a game that with a bit more polish and time could've been great. I'll start with the positives. The art is beautiful for the 2D aspects, the character in the overworld is simple but effective and the animations look great. The…
