Mixed: praised for customization and humor, but criticized for bugs and grind.
Many players praise the game's deep customization, humor, and tactical gameplay, calling it a hidden gem. However, others report serious bugs, crashes, and a grindy meta-progression system that ruins the experience. [2][4][12][24][34][36]
Some players note the game feels abandoned, with a broken internal workshop and no updates. Others enjoy the workshop content and voice acting, but warn about the steep learning curve and slow interface. [3][26][30][33][35]

60 of 189 · most liked firstA+ game design, but the user experience makes me want to throw my computer my fifth floor balcony onto the first pedestrian I see. I spent an *extremely* limited time playing the game as a result. The game design is solid, and the amount of possible depth is pretty obvious immediately. The sheer size of party combinations, card battling modifications, depth of statistics/abilities, custom assets, and so on would make this a pretty great game to play, especially with friends. Like I said, it…

unlabelledView post →A turn based RPG/strategy game with a ton of customizability and workshop support. Seems great for people who want to make custom characters and monsters and abilities, or who loves to customize their game by downloading all of those things. I just wanted to play the game, and found the gameplay ponderous and slow and with a really cumbersome interface.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As much as I like the art style, tactical gameplay and even the custom content..I can't in good conscience recommend Popup Dungeon because of its one glaring, huge and fatal flaw--the meta progression. The idea is you play content, earn gold, get charms, refine those charms either by buying tokens for higher tier ones or combining. That's all well and good--but the problem is thus; the game encourages you to farm and get higher and higher tier charms, but they progressively become more and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game didn't work for me. Specifically, I encountered what I understand to be a rare bug where I was unable to save progress between games and lost all of it between sessions. So, why am I giving it a positive review? The developer is a class act. I purchased htis back in October 2024, and didn't even launch it to try to play with my gf until January 2025. We ran some missions, had a good time and started to get invested in it, but had to take a break to do things like sleep and work. When…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't for the life of me figure out why this game isn't getting more attention. It has the quality of a triple A game. It has an intuitive design, great sound, awesome gameplay, and everything else you need to make a game that really stands out in a sea of games - or so I would have thought. My word to the designers. I'm sorry that this gem of yours is laying low. It is a piece of art and a truly monumental design. Please maintain it, though I understand that you can't expand it much. If…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The internal workshop doesn't work anymore. Its a big part of the game, so you have been warned.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like so many parts of this game, but the way it keeps trying to decide where it thinks the ideal movement is and auto-complete it, even when you actively try to play the card by hand makes it a miserable experience. Simple example: Smoke bomb: doesn't count as movement Enemy ability: if player moves in range, ATTACK THEM! Me: "okay, I'll smoke bomb! And I'll manually choose here so it only smoke bombs." Game: "oooh so you wanted to MOVE and SMOKE BOMB? Well, that means the enemy gets to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It starts out brilliant, and the workshop support adds some amazing customisation - but sooner or later the grinding of charms makes this feel like a free to play slog. I don't understand why a full price game made the decision to include such a thing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm no stranger to RPGs or rogue-lites but this game seems to be catered to content creators more-so than players. After clicking random clickables throughout the dungeon and watching the painfully slow animations over and over and over I'm just about done with the experience. I literally just want to get through the dialog without all of the animations. The thing that finally shut me down was this really boring Blue Lobster diner visual novel thing after the 2nd wizard tower level. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game will break your heart. It's a great system and sandbox...BUT it is unsupported and prone to crashing and the workshop is clunky and now (for me at least) only capable of hanging. What a waste of potential.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is really good, but it's clearly abandoned. In the FAQ, it says the devs want to add online multiplayer, but they clearly don't even exist to add it anymore. And the game's "website" is now a World of Warcraft fan's page for documenting strategies and gameplay, because apparently the devs can't be bothered to keep their own website. It's a good game, and I DO recommend it, but if you're looking for any sort of support or updates, don't bother.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible controls and limited strategic choices make this game a no from me. In many ways its been crafted really well, The graphics are nice, The overall look is good and the voice acting is ok too but the controls are a mess. Predictive choices? No, I want to play the game not watch it play itself.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It looked really fun at first, and it's definitely a really polished game (as far as indie games go), but the core gameplay is extremely shallow and gets stale really quickly. This is hardly a roguelite. You can build a party from 1-5 characters. The problem with Popup Dungeon is each of these characters only learns 2 or 3 abilities. Depending on (randomly generated) loot you find in dungeons, they may learn 1 or 2 more abilities. These abilities are all extremely straightforward and have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2025 Game doesn't run past the first bootup. Tutorial froze so I reset and now just gives me a blue screen of death. Check other negative reviews, it's seems pretty common.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's alright, but I think I'm going to have to give it a pass just because it's so slow. It might be down to the mood I'm in, but in spite of having absolutely stunning aesthetics I'd give them all up in a heartbeat if I could force the game to run at quadruple speed. It's not a performance thing, the overall interface is just slow and prone to pausing to let you soak in the details for a moment. The time in between turns, movement, carrying out actions, the whole thing just feels…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like being able to create my own characters. The game autobalances the numbers so you can't be overpowered. You can customize almost everything in the game and download other people's stuff so if you don't want to create and just play, it's still good. I have no complaints.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as much as it saddens me to say this game has begun to fall apart, me and my brother love this game but due to age and neglect from the developer the workshop work around is having ALOT of big problems the main one is failure to download from his workshop even if the file successfully uploads. and as a enemy maker of our campaign its very frustrating to attempt to find whats breaking the enemy's download which is often a normal attack asset. so till fixed i would not recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You can play it once, then next loadup you will get an error that stops you from playing due to "most likely cause is that the game has been blocked by your anti virus software". even with the game being flaged as fine this message will continue until you remove and reinstall the game. then it will go away while you play once until you log out. and then come back again. Just checked, and this error continues even if antivirus is turned off.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has not worked for a long time. It will start once if you reinstall, after that you just get a screen stating it is blocked due to your anti-virus. This is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lie. With my nearly 20 years on Steam this is the only game I have every had this issue with.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have a hard time recommending this game I appreciate the idea of almost-limitless customization and character creation- but most of those good things from the customization gets pull down by almost every enemy you encounters in this game have some overpowered skills that could 1-shot your character- and most of those characters weren't even have any weakness related to the skill of the enemies. To be honest- it is kind of making the customization thing pointless.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a weird one to review. There's a lot of good and a lot of bad Good: The concept is really clever, the humor is good, the references and puns are on point. The character creation system, while not intuitive, is versatile and does a lot to help you work. There's a lot of options for creating mechanically unique and interesting characters, especially once you get into conditionals. I spent lots of time just creating and editing characters. Bad: It's slow. Really slow. Tower floors…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Plenty of "replay" value but just no "play" value. A nice idea with varied characters, but ultimately I got no enjoyment out of it and found it boring, confusing and frustrating. The game basically plays itself by telling you what gear is better, which enemy your ability should hit, etc. Pros: Nice art style Plenty of characters Cons: Clunky combat that is meant to be streamlined but made a simple task of choosing which enemy to hit with an ability impossible (or at least i didn't work this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was amazing for the time being but now its unplayable cannot end your runs and after you do manage to finish a campaign your stuck on the screen and cannot return to the menu you also have to go into the files for the game and delete _temp every time you want to just play if they fix it in the hopefully near future I will return to it but for now there's other options for time wasters
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game to do some RPG runs with wackey characters and scenarios. Although if you hate puns, you'll hate this. Creating your own characters and abilities is a bit complex with all the states and actions and reactions you have available but there are a bunch of characters available on the workshop (in-game workshop, not steam workshop). I do worry what will happen if their servers ever shut down though, would be a shame to lose that functionality. It can have some bad scaling; I believe…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Popup Dungeon is a turn-based tactical RPG with an added twist being that you can create your own characters, items, abilities, and so on. The tactical RPG part is reasonable enough - enemies drop items and you might find additional abilities/bonuses on the levels. These stick around for the duration of a chapter, adding a rogue-lite element of sorts. As for the editor, the game takes basic counter-measures against you creating something absurdly powerful - for example, you can make an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While the gameplay is fine enough, the rest of Popup Dungeon is an overblown festival of unfunny memes and big-name voice acting. The custom content creation process is too limited and not very intuitive, but I respect the developers wanting to enforce fair play by automatically balancing your characters and encounters for you. All in all, this game wreaks with missed potential and misplaced priorities, so it's a pass for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game, a turn based 'tactical' fantasy-skinned pseudo role-playing game leaning heavily into rogue-lite mechanics, is addictive as all heck. The cutesy papercraft style visuals are fun, the audio fits perfectly, the gameplay is stellar. In my humble opinion, this is a must if you've ever played D&D on a tabletop. Is there any downsides? 'some' (a very small selection) of the mechanics can be frustrating, but they all fit in their place, so I can't begrudge the negative effects I've…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The user interface kills my desire to play this game. It should not be hard to click on the unit you want, click on the ability you want, click on the target you want, and then confirm the action -- but it is. It should not be hard to "go back" one layer to un-select a unit, or an ability, or a target -- but it is. I played the tutorial, but basic interactions within the game were unclear, and worse, inconsistent. There was no coherent cause and effect between the buttons I pressed and the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just leaving this here for somebody to find: FDRH4-0CFCT-YXGI2 Activate this code in steam (under "games" -> "Activate a product on Steam..." First person to use this key will get the game, if it has already been used, somebody took it before you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is really fun and I love the tools it gives you, but I ran into a major graphical bug that made the game hit me with a strobe-light effect on a consistent basis. I tried reaching out to the developers and publisher for support, but neither party responded to my inquiries. I looked into it further, and the developer seems to be defunct, so I'm assuming this game is abandoned, which really sucks, because it's an incredible foundation for what could've become something truly great.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wizard Tower Floor 17 is unreasonably difficult
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first glance, it didn't catch my attention, but last week I gave it a try. What a game! I have to say, it's nothing short of a gem. The combinations, the comedy, and the story are all fantastic. The level of customization is impressive and can surprise you from time to time. Great job, devs—you nailed it! I hope you release expansions from time to time.

When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It tries for charming and ends up feeling cheap and lazy. Characters all feel samey, gameplay is an inch deep and a foot wide. At $5 this could be OK value, at $25 I want a refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels clunky, I dunno I don't feel hooked at all The tutorial seems pretty decent for once, but it just looks like a pretty slow tactical RPG Dunno it just doesn't feel fresh, the graphics are pretty cute tho
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eveything about this game oozes charm and dedication to the D&D universe. Sadly, charms alone cannot save the most dreadfully boring turn-based RPG combat I've ever had the displeasure of playing through. Everything is just so slow incredibly slow and restrictive.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While it is a hilarious game, and it is fun, the problem is that the checkpoints are few and far between. I just went abour four hours without finding one. Not to mention the large amounts of backtracking for charms that's required to actually get anywhere. So you just end up playing the same few levels several times over before you can actually progress. I for one am not fond of repetitive things, especially if they're not satisfying, as I just spent about an hour trying to kill a boss that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game had a lot of things going for it. Unfortunatly, their decision to make customization only in game destroys much of what could of been a great banger. The decision to do this probably killed the game. The way to make new characters is confusing and abysmal. If they cleaned up the interface and made things much more clear to understand, it might be fine. But the way everything is done with the search is unreliable, and terms often have double meanings. If I look for status effects, I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was very disappointed with this game based on all of the positive reviews. It is very difficult to see anything and understand how to play. The tutorial is poorly written. It spends more time trying to be funny with a bat named "Ding" than informative. I might come back and try and play this again some other time. There are too many games out there than to waste my time trying to understand how to play this when I have to squint at the screen and the stats on the cards to try and even read…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awful UI, targeting enemies is confusing and a chore. The writing's unfunny. The least tactical tactics game I've played.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good idea that would have been a great game if they had put more effort into it. The "editor" only lets you customize a marginal number of elements. The main built-in game is literally a mockery of itself. It's frustrating when you find something that you almost love and could have turned into something better yourself, but have to just sigh and walk away from because most developers in the 21st Century are just plain lazy ♥♥♥♥♥, and most "managers" have zero business being in the industry.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →remote play together doesnt work at all.. shame, its very fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a damn shame, this game had so much potential but it is a buggy mess. I finished the tutorial and got stuck by selecting the wrong choice at the end. I couldn't end the run and start over, I had to Alt+F4 just to close the program. Then it wouldn't let me back into the game. I got stuck on a splash page with a message about how anti virus software can sometimes block the program from running. I followed all the instructions and I'm still stuck. By all accounts the devs have abandoned this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →MindBoggling how good this actually is. A MUST HAVE for strategy lovers of any kind IMO!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have rarely come across a game that has the replayability of this one. Not to mention the top notch voice acting of John de Lancie and Mat Mercer! The workshop is one of the best and creators can upload whole campaigns not just items and characters. More people should know about this game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A positively beautiful game that I have no clue how to play, because I'm not a tabletop type of dude. Frustrating, because it is 7 degrees level of polished. Animations are cool, graphically looks cool (although I may not agree with how the characters are represented in this weird Minecraft/Roblox inconsistent fusion). The enemies, skills, and weapons are all fleshed out... Funny enough, I couldn't even make it past the title screen the first time I launched the game. I went into the "create"…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I noticed this game when it first came out but I'm cheap and there are very few games I'll pay opening-day price for (Fallout, for example). But now that I have it, I am finding myself enjoying this quirky little entry into the semi-RPG game universe. There is a bit of a learning curve, but with a bit of application and maybe a few tutorial videos you get the hang of the important play components fairly quickly. Focus on one or two areas/specialties (there are dozens). Support characters are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great game- with some good humor mixed into the main campaign (Wizard's Tower). Sadly, the community isn't as active as it could be anymore (maybe a SALE on the game would get it a little more attention/publicity? Devs?) A fun experience- thoroughly enjoyed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this, My team is Xmen with Goku and Darth Vader. No other game will let me do this.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you get some of the 90's pop culture media then this game will resonate very deeply for you. Being one that has done a pop up dungeon before any of these video games even existed, brings back some real memories. That being said, even if you don't have some of the nostalgia that I did while playing this game, this is a fairly good turn based, tile based RPG. Being able to have a warrior with a group consisting of a superhero and a wild west gunslinger is pretty sweet. Each class has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun at first, but turns really grindy towards the end. From my current over 100h of playtime, probably about half were used to grind for the last two levels. I need to give one huge plus for this game. Unexpectedly it has managed to get the worlds top leading actor to voice one of the characters. Known for his previous master roles, such as district 8 medic in Hunger games. That unmistakable top level voice and voice acting caught me by surprise.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Graphics look nice, but the UI is very confusing. I didn't find the humor appealing either. I just gave up on it because it just couldn't hold my attention.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely love this game well at least the first time I played it but every time since it always blocks me from booting up the game saying there's something conflicting with antivirus even though there isn't and no matter what you do the problem doesn't go away and so you can never play this game again which is really sad because it was really awesome.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(From an experience of a host of remote-play) It's alright. It's fun to strategize with friends. _____________________________________ But playing this game alone? Nah. The in-game explanation is unclear, the progression balance is questionable, and the game becomes too repetitive at some point because there are more levels than the variety of character pool, especially later in the game when enemies' defensive stats are so inflated and pushed the player to relies on same 'ol.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seeing Hanzo Hasashi drowned by a giant lobster, Gordon Ramsay screaming and taunting its army of potatoes minions with his "It's raaaw!" and "c'mere you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ donkey", while Geralt of Rivia soloing these potatoes was one-of kind experience this game gave me. I laughed hard. Very underrated rogue-lite. Good gameplay, meta-storytelling, and meme-potential. Shame the developer killed/severely diminished the value of this game by introducing clunky in-game workshop instead of using…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is absolutely enchanting. I don't generally review games, but this game NEEDS to get more recognition for how wonderful it is. Some reviews I've read mentioned crashing, confusing mechanics, and lackluster gameplay. I genuinely have no idea why. 1: My game has never crashed, frozen, nor been buggy (that I've noticed) 2: I haven't had any issues along the way in figuring out its mechanics. It is very self explanatory as the character's abilities are card-based, so the description is on…
