“The 2026 midterms are the first major test. Historical precedent strongly favors opposition gains. But Republican gerrymandering, Democratic structural disadvantages in Senate geography, and a fractured opposition make the outcome genuinely uncertain. If Democrats fail to take the House, the institutional check dynamic becomes significantly more constrained. regardless of electoral outcomes, the executive power consolidation of 2025–2026 will be very difficult to reverse. The playbook has been demonstrated. The next Democratic president will almost certainly use the same tools. America is drifting toward an imperial presidency model in which formal constitutional constraints exist but informal norms that once enforced them are gone.”
