While not perfect mainly due to mild/general misogyny from films of the time period, and a at times a pretty cliche "based on a true story" biopic, the great performances & message of the film ended up winning me over 8/10.

The mid-50s soundtrack is solid, the score Mark Isham provides is beautiful (especially when Homer is staring up at the night sky watching Sputnik passing over), and

unlabelledView post →I also love how every piece of culture (popular or academic) about coal mining is about how terrible of a job it was for the people who did it. It's one of the central conflicts of October Sky. But that makes sense that such an antiscience admin would want to do the opposite of that movie.

unlabelledView post →All this Trump talk of reviving coal got me thinking about the 1999 film October Sky, starring a young Jake Gyllenhaal as a coal miner's son who takes up rocketry. This is a really enjoyable movie, based on the memoir of Homer Hickam, a former NASA engineer.

So the name was changed to October Sky — the same 10 letters in a different order."
