It relied almost exclusively on unnecessary shock value to drive the narrative and keep people watching. It was so pointlessly raunchy and disgusting. If you have to rely on gratuitous sex and violence to keep your audience engaged, you're not making a good show. Nip/Tuck is another great example of this.
