unlabelledView post →Hot take: I feel that Mina The Hollower disabling achievements if you have accessibility/difficulty-reducing options on isn't an accessibility issue. It's an issue with achievements. They've broken people. Lots of folks can't enjoy a game unless they fill an arbitrary list of metrics tickboxes.

The good news is that Mina the Hollower could be special. For Businessweek, this is their story: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

unlabelledView post →I would put this review down as neutral if I could. Okay anyway here's my take so far. The game frustrated me within the two hours I've played enough to say "♥♥♥♥ this" and put it down for the evening and this is a bad sign, especially for a backer who's been looking forward to it. Difficulty is not a thing that repels me, and the earnest difficulty of this doesn't bother me. But there's a number of things that just irk me up the damn wall. Firstly, I have become doubtful that Dark…

Mina the Hollower The new game from Shovel Knight developers Yacht Club, I've been eagerly anticipating this one, it looks so good! Love that there's a few games lately that have that Gameboy colour vibe going on.

unlabelledView post →great game, but even though i am overall having a blast i cannot recommend this game in good faith due to the lack of epilepsy warnings paired with the lack of a setting to disable the bright white eye-piercing screen flashes that this game frequently has (especially during cutscenes, bosses, and the proto spark trinket) i want to give it a positive review and i will change it if there is some way to disable screen flashing

unlabelledView post →Recommending it but be warned the game can be incredibly frustrating. I'm going to start with some complaints but I promise I do actually enjoy the game and don't need to "git gud." People will defend the game's difficulty but there are a lot of design choices around the combat that just outright confuse me. You can jump over some attacks, you can burrow some attacks, you can deflect some attacks back, but there's no indication on any attacks which way you're supposed to avoid the damage. It…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As with many critically acclaimed difficult games, the reviews are polarized between "This game is amazing" and "This is completely unfair and bad design". If you enjoy the challenge style of this game, it is outstanding. If you don't, you're probably going to be frustrated. The devs really go out of their way to design encounters to punish your habits in the way of enemy and hazard placement (think Sen's Fortress in Dark Soul 1). Platforming is often done under pressure and demands a good…

unlabelledView post →This game is interesting, its easy to see why some will give it a 10/10. The music, artstyle, world design and storytelling are all excellent. They also took alot of risks and where willing to try out mechanics totally new to the genre, unfortunately not all of the new mechanics land well. The centerpiece mechanic is a 'jump into a dodge/dig' that replaces staple mechanics of jumping, running and/or dodging into a one input mechanic that is definitely one that is not going to click for…

Honestly, the game is great, very challenging, good looking and fun during the time I have played, but the font of ALL OF THE TEXT IN THE GAME is nearly unreadable with my dyslexia. With all of the accessibility options they put in the game, it seems like they could at least add a dyslexic friendly font. Once we get that, Id flip it back to a thumbs up but I cant recommend a game I cant read

unlabelledView post →Im a big fan of retro games, enjoyed Shovel Knight a lot, and love the visual and audial presentation of Mina the Hollower. But there are so many confusing design decisions that contradict each other. You pick one of three different weapons at the beginning and as of 3 hours into the game, I haven't gotten an option to pick one of the other two. Each weapon changes how you approach combat, but then you're locked into a weapon (and therefore playstyle) before ever seeing your first enemy. You…

unlabelledView post →I'm not sure about this one. I've enjoyed it a fair bit, and I'm close to done. Yet every time I play, it seems to get less fun. At this point, until further notice, I'm just not feeling it. Mina really frontloads its difficulty. The combat and platforming are both tough at the start which may filter out a lot of players, but it gets really easy toward the end thanks to forgiving progression systems and powerful equipment. Mina is so powerful it's hard to call it a Soulslike despite having…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games yet again where I wish I could give a mixed review. Mina the Hollower is not bad, but it is heavily flawed in ways that make me very sad. This game is incredibly frontloaded with difficulty, and then once you start gaining the trinkets you can generally facetank about a solid 85% of the game. I even managed to facetank the final boss of the game. You also can level up, and leveling up is very easy to do as you can grind the currency of the game "bones" super fast.…

unlabelledView post →Okay, so I have completed the game twice now, collected every item, done pretty much everything I could in terms of stuff to grab. I still probably have like 60 hours left of doing stuff in this game. This is easily my GOTY thus far and I have extreme doubts it will be topped. The gameplay is immaculate, I love the art and world, Jake Kaufman OST, cute victorian mouse girl, it's really just perfect. I wasn't a huge fan of 2D Zelda going into this. I just didn't grow up with it and never…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you have played a souls game this is less punishing than that. The negative reviews main complaint is the punishing nature of the game (which is really not as punishing as they say) The game gives plenty of checkpoints even right before difficult bosses, making runbacks nonexistent. I assume people see the little funny mouse character and buy it without looking deeper into the product. Like going into Hollow Knight expecting a walking simulator. Some things in the game could be better,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game seemed really promising (I'm a big fan of both 2D Zelda and Souls games) but so far, it seems like a mishmash of genres that ended up not working well together, at all. Why this happens? Let me list a few things: - Like other reviews already mentioned, this game's healing system seems to take inspiration from Bloodborne's rally, except the devs didn't seem to grasp what made rally actually good. In BB it rewarded aggressive play by letting you recover after getting hit, and the…
