King of Dragon Pass
Developer A Sharp
King of Dragon Pass is a 1999 strategy simulation fantasy video game published by A Sharp. Set in the fictional world of Glorantha, the player controls the fate of a barbarian clan settling in the dangerous frontier region of Dragon Pass. Originally released for PC, the game was a commercial failure. It was ported for iOS in 2011, and was later released for Android and re-released for PCs. From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

A tactical narrative game about staging heists in different hells that blends mythology and surrealism from the creators of King of Dragon Pass and Six Ages - there’s nothing like it. unlabelledView post →Aah, here's a deep cut sales recommendation - how does King Of Dragon Pass, But You're An Actual Dragon sound? Golden Treasure is a prose-heavy dragon life sim/RPG. Complex, messy & very replayable. Hunt, hoard, learn magic, commune with nature, and decide what to do wish these weird 'human' things

unlabelledView post →King of Dragon Pass is one of the very few civ builders in choose your own adventure style. It is similar to the very old civ builders on the C64 back in the days when computers had difficulties with fast graphics. It also seems to be inspired by early table top and board games (Hero Quest, Talisman, etc.) Most of these games, and King of Dragon Pass, have very glaring flaws, especially in terms of action balance and risk-reward. They live purely from their settings with little else (which is…

unlabelledView post →King of Dragon Pass is only similar to the Six Ages series, which is made by the same studio and in the same universe. A VN/strategy game hybrid where at one moment you're fighting a clan trying to steal your cows and in the other you're trying to raise a legal case against a ghost haunting a house

A prose-heavy Dragon life-sim adventure, a bit like King Of Dragon Pass, but you're an actual dragon. A sequel - Heirophant - is in development but remains mysterious

unlabelledView post →I'm really sad about the thumbs down but I find the game is just too... I can't even find a word for it. The interface is good, it's visually appealing, the idea is great, and I'm enjoying the individual events that come up. The devs put a lot of love into this game and it shows. But there's just too much stuff that's poorly explained in the tutorial and you kind of have to stumble across by yourself. I am desperately trying to complete one of the quests that you absolutely have to have to…

unlabelledView post →Honestly way more fun than I expected. Wasn't really sure what this game was going to be like, but it just ended up being a cool choice-based roleplay fantasy game. I'd definitely recommend picking this up on sale if you like rpgs, visual novels, or older style games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great game, but this version is inferior in every way to the original. It's a mobile port with cut content, it's lacking in charm compared to the original. Just play the original instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fantasy world called Glorantha created by game designer Greg Stafford in the 1960s. It's been used for board games, roleplaying games like Runequest, and computer games like The King of Dragon Pass. The Great Darkness was a mythic apocalypse that happened in Glorantha before time began.
unlabelledView post →Yes, I am this level of mega-dork. Fun fact - I have absolutely no memory of how I got into Glorantha. There was nobody who told me about it; no random Runequest book I found on the game store shelf; I didn't stumble on 'King of Dragon Pass' on sale. Apparently, I've just always been into the world.
unlabelledView post →King of Dragon Pass is about generational storytelling in the mythic world of Glorantha. If this sounds good to you, you're in for a treat. If you look for a civ-like game, you will be disappointed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So well-deserved: please vote for Six Ages! If you love RuneQuest and Greg Stafford's mythic TTRPG setting Glorantha, you'll this amazing computer game, a spiritual successor to the groundbreaking King of Dragon Pass. [Both wonderfully immersive intros to Greg's setting too!]
unlabelledView post →@harvey1966.bsky.social I reckon you've played King of Dragon Pass? It's designers, @radiofreelunch.bsky.social and @robindlaws.bsky.social, have just put out a new tactical narrative game, and I think it's a step forward in procedural narrative, in the same way KoDP was in the late 90s.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a text-based village survive and thrive sort of game with elements of fantasy and plenty of combat. That said, the game becomes a rather boring routine fairly quickly. You have at least a dozen choices to make, but you make the exact same dozen choices each year. Will you go to war in the summertime? Will you explore the countryside? Will you build a shrine to one of 35 gods or ignore them? My biggest issue with the game is that it is too difficult to understand which choices lead…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fairly unique mix of management and choose your own adventure, with a sprinkling of RPG. It's very engaging for a while, but borders on repetitive later on. You play as a clan from a group of people known as the Orlanthi and try to lead them to greatness in a world filled with danger, strange creatures, and wild magics. The game's biggest accomplishment is how it forces you to adopt an Orlanthi mentality. Forget assumptions or reason. Your decision-making must be informed by their beliefs…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game simply freezes after a short time. Can't even return it since it's been in library for a while. Judging from forum the game is EXTREMELY buggy, so beware.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →yoo the King of Dragon Pass folks are doing a game about pulling heists in hell
unlabelledView post →I would strongly dispute that this is the “first Runequest video game” (that would be King of Dragon Pass) but I’m a sucker for turn-based games and will definitely try this if it ever gets done.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →part visual novel, part city manager, all weird fantasy bronze age. don't let its reputation intimidate you; the hardest part about KODP is adapting to the Orlanthi mindset, which comes with time and experience. game rules.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried roleplaying as the Ironborn Greyjoys from A Song of Ice and Fire. We do not Sow, we do not farm, we do not bow and we do not honor foolish gods only the Drown God. We raid, we plunder, we kill, we defile, the iron price is our only curency. Turns out you can't roleplay as a badass clan of bloodthirsty vikings that glorify violence and death mainly because the only clan we raided and kept killing aggresively for 10 years would keep getting repopulated, I killed up to 3,000 of their…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game poses as a fun adventure of managing your tribe, but it turns out to be Excel spreadsheet simulator... except you can't see the numbers. It's a strategy game where numbers matter the most, yes. Which normally wouldn't be a problem. But here you won't see these numbers, you won't see your chances, and you have to guess why you failed. With such a bad game design idea, I don't even know how this game earned enough money to provide for sequel. Doesn't matter if you pick the easiest…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →King of Dragon Pass might be one of the most in-depth and unique examples of a true "role-playing" game. It's unique in the extent to which you must immerse yourself in the game's lore and worldbuilding; this is not a game you loosely stumble through as your self-insert character. If the prospect of immersing yourself in deep mythology and in-game history appeals to you, look no further.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →King of Dragon Pass? More like king of RNG b***sh*t! Plays like an old Choose Your Own Adventure game scripted by a village idiot and laid out by a shovelware designer. Minding your own business farming? Here, have four raids in a row you can't hope to fight off. Here's a random event with no positive outcomes. And another. Oh, and you lost 50 cattle to nonsense. Heroquest? Hope you enjoy guessing games based on insane troll logic and RNG nonsense.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There really are not many other games quite like King of Dragon Pass, the fact this game was originally published in 1999 makes it even more fascinating. This is because the game feels ahead of its time now, let alone in the late 90s. This is partly thanks to the game being set in the world of Glorantha that feels fresh and creative (but is actually quite aged having been around since the 50's) in this post-DnD boom era where worlds closely derived from Tolkein have become oversaturated and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had sworn off Glorantha but the Dragon Pass book may just pull me back in. <Resigned sigh.> It WOULD complement my copies of King of Dragon Pass & the original Dragon Pass board game nicely.
unlabelledView post →The game Nocked! reminds me of most is King of Dragon Pass, a tribe management sim-come-IF game which originally came out on Windows in ‘99, but is now on gog/steam. More ‘graphical’ than Nocked! it’s got a rugged, early history atmosphere to it -with fantasy elements :) #blutoid #adveturegames

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I gave Thousand Hells - The Underworld Heist a try and holy hell is this bringing me those King of Dragon Pass vibes. Give me that gamebook style any day. I also need to look at the new Life and Suffering game, but that one feels like it’s itching for a WOFF
unlabelledView post →Complexity Has Claimed Another Victim King of Dragon Pass must surely be the winner of the prestigious Most Game Rules per Kilobyte of Program Code competition. Its Glorantha clan-management world is astonishingly complex, mixing politics, diplomacy, trade, barter, warfare, religion, training and resource management with interactive storytelling. That complexity is simultaneously the best thing about the game and, for me, the thing that eventually kills it. The interface feels charmingly…

unlabelledView post →for that I'd recommend the excellent video game King of Dragon Pass, or the current edition of Runequest + the very good starter adventure book "The Pegasus Plateau"
unlabelledView post →Immersive narrative, with the lore and dynamics of the clan in Dragon Pass, truly addicting for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game doesn't even have a drop-down list for screen resolution; you have to click it until you get to one you might like and then restart it (yes, you can select full screen). Options for what you can do are hidden in scroll-down menus, where you might not think to look. To play this game, you will need at least an hour of study sessions on guides to get the basics. That's the "level" of pure frustration this game sometimes provides.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a very good starting point is King of Dragon Pass, a much beloved video game now available on many platforms, or the sequel (actually prequel), Six Ages. in conventional roleplaying games, the most recent Runequest edition is excellent.
unlabelledView post →Music, gameplay, setting are wonderful. If you like old-school RPGs or 90s tacticals, you'll be able to find a lot of wonder in this game. As of 2024, I've still yet to play the sequel Six Ages: Ride Like The Wind.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't play a lot of digital games, but this one has a special place in my heart. I own the sequels but never really found time to play them. King of Dragon Pass wasn't quite my entry into Glorantha, but it was a big part of making me more interested in the setting.

I guess you have to lose a couple playthroughs before you have an idea where to go with this ♥♥♥♥. There's pages and pages of manual but most of it prefers to talk about inconsequential lore rather than explain you how to play. There are some cool CYOA episodes but they can repeat and they don't seem to have any immediate effect on whatever's required as win/loss conditions. Most people seem to…
