Frances Dee as Jane Eyre: lovely.

A blend of melodrama & heist movie from the mid ‘50s; a most enjoyable JANE EYRE adaptation that leans into the novel’s Gothic sensibilities; an absorbing documentary on female pioneers of electronic music; and a rewatch of a favourite De Palma. ❤️ #FilmSky

unlabelledView post →This is the fakest literary classic prop since the copy of Jane Eyre with which the 1943 film begins. Ah, Charlotte Brontë's immortal words: 'My name is Jane Eyre---. I was born in 1820, a harsh time of change in England'.

It plays like a sexy fanfic version of Jane Eyre, one in which Jane is Adele’s mother in addition to being her governess. It’s suffused in this beautifully wintry and gloomy

Part of this is probably mixing it up with the publication dates (Emily and Charlotte were writing in the Victorian era), but a lot of it’s probably also to do with the costuming and fashion for the film versions (Jane Eyre adaptations usually follows Victorian styling instead, for example)

E.g. you couldn’t do it in a film version of Huck Finn or Jane Eyre. But I see nothing wrong with telling stories where race is not a central concern.

I can't tell if that was the intent, but it works—Allyson's character is the film's expat Jane Eyre, Brazzi the keeper of the madwoman. A film about territory.
