Critics, per Wikipedia
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 30% of 54 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.3/10. The website's consensus reads: "In the Hand of Dante is a bloated, wildly overplayed literary fever dream whose attempts to merge past and present collapse into accidental farce." Pete Hammond for Deadline writes the film has an "unpredictable, if uneven, screenplay that is all over the map" and that the movie "bites off possibly more than it can chew", but lauds Schnabel for taking a "big swing." Peter Bradshaw for The Guardian gave the film 3/5 stars, singling out Gerard Butler for praise, and said the first 2/3 of the film was enjoyable but "in the end it flags."…

Here's a rare shot of the process in action; just a look at Gerry Butler as Pope Boniface VIII in In The Hand of Dante has sent Joe the cat into a complete spiritual collapse.

Martin Scorsese is Father Abraham from The Smurfs+Gerry Butler is Pope Boniface VIII. 2 out of 5 film-authority.com/2026/06/27/i...
negative · AI labelView post →An anti-Israel group is pressuring the 82nd Venice International Film Festival to uninvite Gal Gadot, even though her film In the Hand of Dante is featured this year. Singling out an actress simply because she is Israeli is not activism, it is blatant antisemitism.
neutral · AI labelView post →Hmm. Often when people pan a movie for being pretentious and directionless, I think "yay, my kind of movie" but I'm sorry to report that In the Hand of Dante is not my kind of movie. The dialogue in the Dante bits reaches parodic levels of olde-timey gibberish. Is it parodying something? Who knows!

neutral · AI labelView post →I thought IN THE HAND OF DANTE would be bonkers fun. Instead, it's 150 minutes of pretentious slop with terrible acting. The odd casting (Scorsese as Gandalf) simply does NOT pay off. Dante is spinning in whatever circle of Hell he's in. One of the year's worst. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/06/24/a...

neutral · AI labelView post →In the Hand of Dante, 2025 film. Director Julian Schnabel. This film hasn't been popular with critics. I can understand why, but I disagree. The film crosses genres, which means a scene that would be just right in another format may feel out of place here. What might feel deep and powerful in a quiet drama may border on cringe or kitsch when shown amidst scenes of mob violence. "Pretentious" is a word that could be applied to some scenes, but when watched with an open mind and with open eyes,…

negative · AI labelView post →Julian Schnabel's In the Hand of Dante is both frenzied and flimsy, a centuries-spanning adventure that makes room for Oscar Isaac, Martin Scorsese, Gerard Butler, and Gal Gadot.

positive · AI labelView post →I'd not heard of In The Hand Of Dante film and now see it has a bunch of prominent actors in it. That was making me more sceptical rather than reassured then I saw this comedically modern looking still from it. I'm in. This is going to be that good sort of dreadful. Like The Old Guard.

neutral · AI labelView post →Unlike many, I liked In The Hand of Dante (Netflix). I like that it held fast to Nick Tosches’ novel & wilfully drifted beyond plot to find meaning in the immediacy of being; of sky & of breath, of love, of Gal Gadot as Venus. But my fave thing in the film was Gerard Butler as gangster, as Pope.

It's not perfect but I thought it was extraordinary, I really enjoyed it. I can't remember the last time I saw a film prepared to be that different. Gerard Butler is incredible.
positive · AI labelView post →Another movie about a poem, this was ruined (for me) by its pointless switching between colour and B&W. Potentially, a strong cast - especially Jason Iasac, Gerard Butler, Jason Momoa - seems wasted on overlong plot with some dreary pretensions. My rating: 3/10 #InTheHandOfDante #movies #filmsky
