Critics, per Wikipedia
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 62% of 21 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.3/10. Sheila O'Malley of RogerEbert.com gave the film two out of four stars and wrote, "Holy Days depends on an audience finding nuns funny, especially when they drive cars, crack jokes, or throw back a glass of wine. As someone with two nuns in my family, I do not find the mere existence of nuns living their lives in the modern world inherently humorous."

51 of 51 · most liked firstThere’s a new film out from NZ called Holy Days, with Miriam Margolyes as a nun, it looks a bit of fun, so I sent the trailer to my two nz friends and one goes ‘oh yeah I provided outfits for that’. NZ continues to have all of six people in it.

I'm watching the classic Yiddish movie, Overture to Glory, starring the brilliant cantor and actor Moishe Oysher, as a Polish cantor who gets recruited by the Warsaw opera to sing for them.

unlabelledView post →We are watching the movie Holy Days (Hoopla) with Judy Davis and Mariam Margolyes. Set in 1974 New Zealand, about some nuns who are going to lose their convent, and a young boy who goes on a road trip with them to save it. Learned Ezekiel 23:20 includes “genitals like donkeys”. Lots of good humor.

unlabelledView post →One of *my* High Holy Days. First film I saw in theaters with just a friend (Amanda Wright!) and no parents chaperoning. First film I saw multiple times in theaters (3x total). And a VHS -- then DVD -- I watched so much I broke the damn thing(s). Still have it memorized, start to finish.

unlabelledView post →Holy Days, the movie based on the Joy Crowley book, makes a pretty good sick-day watch. It's a bit clumsy in spots. Plotwise, has similarities with The Mountain, though less focalised through the kid perspective. Also elicits Call the Midwife, though less of a Serious Drama. Fun overall, though.

Simchat Torah is the official end of the High Holy Days. Anyone who knows the Jewish calendar could have told you this was planned.
