The dynamic & elegant CinemaScope blocking & lack of music create coiled tension that becomes nerve-wracking. Great use of windows & doors to create frames within frames.
unlabelledView post →Frame one of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low had me pause the film and do a lap around the apartment. Spike Lee, even with Denzel Washington at your disposal, why did you even try?
unlabelledView post →Happy #LetterboxdFriday 📽️! Another great #LastFourWatched for me with a film from director Akira Kurosawa (at the cinema) being the highlight. What have you been watching? Warfare (2025) High and Low (1963) Shanghai Express (1932) Sorcerer (1977)

Considered a loose adaption, the film makes the protagonist more sympathetic & is less of a police procedural. Kurosawa focuses on class disparity unlike the book. 💼💸📈 #booksky #filmsky

unlabelledView post →This is going to go so hard. People were just outright dismissing this as if Spike wanted to dishonor Kurosawa but it might be my most anticipated American movie of the summer. Also, stop calling this a remake. It, like High and Low before it, is an adaption of King’s Ransom. Ed McBain respect!

unlabelledView post →Rewatched Kurosawa's High and Low (1963) and that film starts tense and doesn't let up for 143 mins. Claustrophobic pressure cooker that's so good that I have zero desire to see a remake of it.
unlabelledView post →"High and Low" is not that well known, but I'd contend it is Kurozawa's most thrilling film, Mifune's greatest screen performance, as well as a mind-blowing exercise in virtuosic film-making - the "famous" train scene, never bettered, as no-one would have the guts to try anything like it again.

What a career. (And RAN was the first Japanese movie I ever saw, so he was iconic for me.)
unlabelledView post →Rewatched HIGH AND LOW to get ready for the new Spike next week. Of course a great film, not just a terrific work of tension and cinematic staging, but a really searing look at contemporaneous Japanese class structure (that part I didn't remember so well). Kurosawa made pretty good movies I guess.

There's not much I can say about this one that hasn't already been said. Deserves the praise it has heaped on it. This is one to be watched!

unlabelledView post →High and Low. 1963. Dir: Akira Kurosawa. If you haven’t journeyed into Kurosawa yet, this is an excellent starting point. 60s film noir; a perfectly twisted crime thriller, set against a backdrop of Tokyo hilltop mansions and their guttural slums below. Spectacular. #filmsky #cinema #kurosawa
