Killing enemies does nothing, so you just march forward attacking the air ignoring everything. With the same character, with the same 4 skills, with basically no progression other than +5% damage every now and then. There are free to play mobile games that are much, much less grindy than this. To elaborate: in order to max out a character's stats you need literally hundreds of thousands of gold. You typically get maybe 10-20k gold a run, and that's before tax. Tax is a stupid mechanic which absolutely does not need to be in this game or any other. Initial progression is really fun since I liked developing the town and constantly getting upgrades from various shopkeepers. I guess where I stopped enjoying the game was NG+2 when it felt like every run was just throwing more numbers at you.

Biggest issue is the game really wants you to do every boss with every character at least once because doing so gives permanent upgrades to all characters. If you want to make real progression with a character you need to spend a bunch of gold buying them items, blessings, and keys otherwise you're going to be really weak a few worlds in (not impossible, but you die fast and enemies have big hp pools), however you don't really want to do that until you've leveled the gear…

But with ONE massive caveat: The grind for money and materials is undoable for time purposes unless you exploit the gambling system using a trick of starting and stopping the game. Without that trick, you'd spend 85% of your time grinding money and materials to buy buffs and items for the other 15% where you'd actually play. With that exploit, the game is incredible. Without it, whoo boy... no one has that much time.
