Greyhound
A first-time captain leads a convoy of allied ships carrying thousands of soldiers across the treacherous waters of the "Black Pit" to the front lines of WWII. With no air cover protection for 5 days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy Nazi U-boats in order to give the allies a chance to win the war. From TMDB

unlabelledView post →finally got around to watching GREYHOUND, a middling entry in the "Tom Hanks is a Captain" film genre, and it's interesting to compare it to the novel on which it's based, Forester's THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

unlabelledView post →I LOVE this movie. I am not usually a fan of Tom Hanks but Greyhound is non stop action, process, and relationships. The way they manage to convey that he’s essentially got a battle computation going on in his head is just marvellous.
unlabelledView post →Tom Hanks wrote the screenplay of Greyhound for himself, he knows his emotional angles and what works when he delivers it. There is no sight of shore the entire film – there is just the Atlantic in undersold moribund grey to horizon without a plane in silhouette to cloud. 85 minutes.

This is one of several they featured in What a Carve Up! (1961) aka No Place Like Homicide (1962)

unlabelledView post →late to the part but Greyhound is excellent and I might go on a u-boat movie kick because I’ve never actually seen Hunt for Red October and nothing makes me want to vom like the idea of being on a submarine.
unlabelledView post →The Apple TV series Master of the Air and the movie Greyhound portray the reality of WWII. In WWII over 3500 ships were destroyed and over 72,000 men were killed in the North Atlantic by German Uboats. There is nothing more frightening than having a Fox News alcoholic responsible for our military.
unlabelledView post →Watched Greyhound again tonight. What a fun little film. Remember when the US/UK/CAN fought Nazis instead of inviting them into our ranks?
unlabelledView post →I firmly believe every member of a Star Trek TV series writers room, and any screenwriter hired to work on a Star Trek film, should be made to watch GREYHOUND so they understand what combat on a ship (sea or space) REALLY feels like.
unlabelledView post →I'm watching Greyhound (it's set on a ship like my paternal grandfather served on, and it's the only WWII movie I've ever seen that is) but every time I get distracted bc Tom Hanks dries his face at the start with the exact red and white hand towels we use in our kitchen

unlabelledView post →I watched Greyhound with my Dad a while back because my grandfather served on a Liberty ship in WWII. We wanted to feel connection to each other and to this older man who we both knew but who had since died. And I know that there were elements of the story that were made up to make a better movie.
unlabelledView post →Me as well. If you liked Greyhound, try this: Watch the Robert Mitchum 50's movie "The Enemy Below". Then watch the OG Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror". Both are good on their own, but they're great together.
unlabelledView post →And if you're a Ton Hanks (or C. S. Forester) fan, the movie Greyhound is on there and it's a fun watch. (Though I admit I'm biased, being both a sucker for submarine movies and a middle-aged white guy.)

unlabelledView post →Just done my yearly rewatch of Greyhound and damn if it isn't a great war film. No filler, it gets stuck in to the action straight away and then it doesn't let up. Tom Hanks' Krause isn't perfect, he makes several mistakes, but he gets the important things right and he gets his flock through hell.
