Green Book
Tony Lip, a bouncer in 1962, is hired to drive pianist Don Shirley on a tour through the Deep South in the days when African Americans, forced to find alternate accommodations and services due to segregation laws below the Mason-Dixon Line, relied on a guide called The Negro Motorist Green Book. 60 of 193 · most liked firstfinally saw The Green Book, and while there are valid critiques of that movie I did not realize how much seeing Viggo Mortensen play a huge greaseball Italian was missing from my life. Seeing him house an entire pizza after rolling it in half, like a monster, really did something for me.

unlabelledView post →Hell no. B movies are full of treasure, where the most subversive and sublimated ideas are expressed. As I once introduced a movie at a screening ‘if you think Oscar winning Green Book is better than Robocop or Night of the Living Dead you’re out of your goddamn mind’
unlabelledView post →Every decade at the Oscars needs a Green Book, an offensively problematic movie with the veneer of representation, so Hollywood can pat itself on the back for being progressive. I guess this decade's movie is Emilia Pérez.
unlabelledView post →Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was one of the worst Oscar favorites in recent memory, gotta say. Green Book (rightly) gets a lot of shit for its treatment of systemic racism but I put this one right up there. And that's not the only problem with the movie either
unlabelledView post →When Bret Stephens asks why people should be made to feel like outsiders in their own country, I'm sure he's referring to sundown towns and that new "whites only" place that got a lot of press lately, right? This is surely a critique of why things like the Green Book (book, not movie) exist??

unlabelledView post →Emilia Pérez is this year’s Green Book. It’s the movie that voters are choosing because it thinks it makes them look accepting.
unlabelledView post →A year ago, trans people were joking about how we just needed to make a terrible "Green Book"-style trans movie for cis people, and it would win every Oscar. Little did we know that we were manifesting "Emilia Perez."
unlabelledView post →It’s cause one is an actually pretty good musical with a great message portrayed in a good way. Perez is a mock of a film towards the trans community, and does the same shit that Green Book did.
unlabelledView post →Part of me wants to watch Emilia Perez but there are too many factors that make me feel like it’ll probably kill me. French made film on Latin cartels and the trans experience as a musical that seems to be this years Green Book for awards eugh. It’s making my frenzy meter flare up
unlabelledView post →Black Panther deserved to be the first Superhero Comic Book movie to win an Oscar. Green Book was a joke of a movie even his family hated.
unlabelledView post →Yeah, but that came down to Green Book vs Roma and Spielberg really came out hard for Green Book because he didn't want a streaming movie to win. Then a couple of years later CODA won and nobody cared anymore.
unlabelledView post →Watched the film ‘Green Book’ last night. Yeah yeah I know I’m a little late. It was a really lovely film.
unlabelledView post →I just watched “Green Book” for the first time. What a great movie!!

unlabelledView post →what a wonderful film. entertaining, suspenseful, moving. Green Book is all of that and more. highly recommended.
unlabelledView post →It was a weird year for award season. The Academy wanted a movie about racism to win, but Black Panther couldn't win because it was a Marvel movie and BlacKKKlansman made the old white people uncomfortable. Roma got a bunch of backlash because it was a "TV movie". Then they were left with Green Book
unlabelledView post →One of the many irritating and off-putting things about the movie Green Book was that it employed the titular practical African-American travel guide as a framing device and not merely wasted it as an interesting historical artifact but kind of unintentionally echoed its workaround solutions.
unlabelledView post →Watching the film “Green Book” Great film!! You really should make a point of seeing this.
unlabelledView post →Modern film critics completely misread Green Book (2018). This new review pushes back against the "white savior" label, grounding the film in its real history. Read the full essay here: thebohemianstar.com/green-book/
unlabelledView post →Speaking to you from the Black Radical Tradition (imagine a crackly radio announcer’s voice) everyone should know the real history of The Green Book which has nothing whatsoever to do with that movie. There is a current GreenBook app and this work is so important.
unlabelledView post →These people would knock the Green Book (the actual guide for black travellers pre-Civil Rights, not the movie) as "Virtue Signaling".
unlabelledView post →i gotta say, all the negative reviews i've read from years after its premiere seem to treat like it's GREEN BOOK or some sort of white guilt deal, and it's just not a defensible reading of the film
unlabelledView post →And Mark Wahlberg has a new movie coming out (By Any Means) that is based on a true story about an FBI partnership with a mob hitman and a Black agent during the Civil Rights Movement, but the trailer feels like it's gonna be more "Green Book" white-saviorism. Doesn't absolve his racist crimes.
unlabelledView post →One of the most damning things I read in that Vulture piece on the Ellisons is that David Ellison’s favorite movie of 2018 was Green Book
unlabelledView post →I think Green Book also benefited from a large contingent of people who refused to vote for a streaming movie (Roma was its only real competition).
unlabelledView post →Instagram: so you like cars? Me: yep Instagram: only post, like, and follow car stuff? Me: again yep Instagram, confidently: then perhaps we can interest you in.... clips from the movie Green Book?
unlabelledView post →The story of Gregory Scarpa assisting the FBI in investing the Chaney-Schwermer-Goodman murders is genuinely fascinating so it sucks that it looks like that Mark Wahlberg movie is just turning it into Violent Green Book
unlabelledView post →There's a lovely little movie on Netflix now - Green Book - based on a true story
unlabelledView post →If One Battle after Another hadn’t won the Oscar, it would have gone down as a quirky movie with some nods to Pynchon, an excellent car chase, and an amusing Benicio del Toro performance, but now it’s getting the full Crash / Green Book treatment.
unlabelledView post →Listen this is a side point from the bad OBAA take but people need to fucking stop with Shakespeare in Love as a go to movie that shouldn't have won. It's not even in the top 10 worst best picture wins and Green Book is right there.
unlabelledView post →Prime examples: The Help Green Book The Blind Side Leo has another movie in this category that has another two years in its life cycle before people will listen. There is another one I refuse to even type out until she’s done with her 5 years because I am tired of people crying at me about it.
unlabelledView post →Like the other five were Vice, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, Black Panther, and A Star is Born. WHEN THE BEST NOMINEE OF THAT GROUP IS A FUCKING MARVEL MOVIE, DIRE PICKS! Also to be clear…it should’ve been Roma. It should’ve been Roma. I’m mad to this very day.
unlabelledView post →Related: that "By Any Means" movie looks like Green Book for guys that never read a book before. The trailer is tone deaf, softening the image of a maniac with a violent past (Gregory Scarpa and Mark Wahlberg).
unlabelledView post →Green Book is a far better movie than Crash or Driving Miss Daisy, but it’s a worse Best Picture winner because of the circumstances and grievances behind its win.
unlabelledView post →I saw THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT ROCKY (aka GREEN BOOK ROCKY) this morning. At least Sly didn't teach Carl Weathers to eat fried chicken in this Peter Farrelly movie.
unlabelledView post →Rewatched Green Book on Netflix last night. No wonder it won Best Pic Oscar. Loved it when I first saw it. Same last night. If you need an upbeat movie to make you feel good, it's a good one for that.
unlabelledView post →"Green Book is a film for old white people." @hamrahrama.bsky.social
unlabelledView post →In The Heat Of The Night is a 1967 movie where racism is NOW, with a Black hero. The Green Book is a 2018 movie where racism is in the past, with a white hero. #lastfourwatched #letterboxdfriday #letterboxd
unlabelledView post →And that's how, many years before a certain horrible film, Lileks' [white] readers learned about the Green Book and the dangers of driving while Black. (3/3)
unlabelledView post →Is OBAA going to turn out like Green Book or Three Billboards or Crash in the end? It sounds like it was a better movie than those three.
unlabelledView post →Watching movie #18: Green Book (2018) with Runrun~
unlabelledView post →As opposed to the really boring one about how people in LA can't drive but will give themselves an Oscar for making a movie about it (which is why I was genuinely shocked that the La La Land reveal was a mistake and disappointed Green Book wasn't).
unlabelledView post →DwW is probably the most ridiculous win because of what it beat, but while DwW isn't a very good movie, it still has good elements. The cinematography is great, and the story is fine, if stretched an hour too long. Green Book is just an awful movie. It wasn't as bad a win, but it was a worse movie.
unlabelledView post →The Green Book. What a film. Being told he couldn’t use the hosts loo and being driven back to his hotel to pee. Trump has tapped in to the redneck DNA that believes God made them superior.
unlabelledView post →Oh yes. Big Miss Millie energy. “I’ve always been good to you people” Peep their movie lists and find: GWTW The Help The Green Book
unlabelledView post →What an eclectic line up of movies. Really feels like the very notion of what an “Oscar movie” is has been totally overhauled since the efforts to expand the Academy started. And also GREEN BOOK is there.
unlabelledView post →Also the movie is *bad*. It's this year's CRASH, GREEN BOOK etc.
unlabelledView post →Having watched the film it just seems like a cheap use of marginalized people to make a movie about how fucked up the world is. Has nothing interesting, profound, or kind to say about Mexico, living as a Trans person, or organized crime. Seems like obvious Oscar bait (ala Green Book and Crash)

unlabelledView post →#Bales2026MovieChallenge -jazz Green Book (2018) My step dad introduced me to the soothing sounds of Don Shirley & I went into the movie a fan. I thought Mahershala Ali subtly conveyed his dignified personality. Powerful performance. I am not with the haters.
unlabelledView post →Hey ‘The Green Book’ is a dogshit movie I don’t even know what I was thinking
unlabelledView post →I don't know what's dumber: Comparing One Battle After Another to Green Book or thinking Anora, Nomadland, and Argo are also comparable. People have this idea because a movie isn't talked about on social media 24/7 it isn't well-liked. I'd be damned if anyone tries to tell me Argo is a bad film.
unlabelledView post →Breadtube watched FD Signifier have a meltdown about this movie and have now all collectively decided that it's as bad as Green Book
unlabelledView post →Green Book is exactly the type of movie the academy goes for. Crash is exactly the type of movie the academy goes for. One Battle After Another (and Sinners!) are movies the academy typically ignores
unlabelledView post →If one more well-meaning white person tells me how much they loved the movie Green Book, I think I will scream
unlabelledView post →4. Just because a movie wins awards does not actually imply it was a good movie. Green Book 2018 - Seriously? Like really? Crash 2004 - It would have been a meaningful film in the 1970s Forrest Gump 1994 - Just ignores history to make a white man the most important figure in recent history.
