BW friend groups (Set It Off, Waiting To Exhale) 4. professional yearners (In The Mood For Love, Past Lives) 5. culture + community (Dolemite Is My Name, Mountains)
unlabelledView post →Really late to say so, and not exactly expecting Gosling to see this (but hey if you do, hi hi love your acting, First Man is my fave astronaut movie ever, long may you run) but... Bladerunner 2049 slayed - don't believe the zillionaire defending his interests in a copyright infringement lawsuit.
unlabelledView post →The people currently in charge of NASA and the US government threw a tantrum about the movie First Man framing landing on the moon as an achievement for all of humanity and not just America. Similarly they were unhappy Ryan Gosling is Canadian. So it's hard to be inspired by the launch yesterday.
unlabelledView post →2026 watch #64: First Man. Revisited Ryan Gosling's OTHER space movie, which I find tragically underrated. The film does a phenomenal job of capturing *just how insane* it was that we sent men to the moon in tin cans powered by math and showing the undiagnosed mental illness it required to go.
unlabelledView post →I remember not enjoying Blade Runner 2049 in the theater but I just rewatched it on my phone and was very moved (my favorite Ryan Gosling movie is still First Man, love that movie). I can’t remember why I didn’t vibe with the movie initially? I guess it was too long?

unlabelledView post →I’m the only person I know who can’t stand AW’s books but I went to see Project Hail Mary bc Ryan Gosling was in it and I loved him in First Man. It wasn’t the numinous experience for me that I’ve seen a lot of people describe but it was a fun SF movie with likable characters and I’d watch it again.

unlabelledView post →I mentioned this before, but Ryan Gosling has had a string of really great movies that are underappreciated. BLADE RUNNER 2049, THE NICE GUYS, FIRST MAN, and the most egregiously overlooked movie of the last 10 years - THE FALL GUY.
unlabelledView post →"First Man" sounds like the title of a movie where an astronaut walks on the moon and then goes back to earth and marries Richard Nixon. Alt-history period piece that carries all the way to 1984 and the election of Robert Redford.

unlabelledView post →First Man is definitely a movie you gotta see in theaters... Excellent but the DVD doesn't really do it justice. Hopefully I'll get to see this on the big screen again someday.

unlabelledView post →Final thoughts: First Man superbly depicts the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong as he walked on the Moon. Expertly cast, shot, cut, set, designed, and scored, the film does justice to both the scholarly biography from which it came and the life of a true American and world hero. #hatm
unlabelledView post →Reminder that this film suffered from an utterly absurd controversy, with certain politicians lambasting it for not showing Armstrong and Aldrin planting the flag specifically (variety.com/2018/film/ne...). #FirstMan #HATM
unlabelledView post →And while we're waiting for the movie to start, make sure to subscribe to the Historians At The Movies Podcast, available on Apple Podcasts. This week we talked about FIRST MAN with its author Jim Hansen and Kevin Rusnak. You'll want to listen in tomorrow #HATM 5/ podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/e...
unlabelledView post →Movie Reviews: First Man. Pretty good, really captured the sacrifices made by NASA and the visceral feel of being in a spacecraft Predator: Badlands. Actually really liked this. Thia and Dek are both kind of an aberrant of their kind, willing to learn and evolve. Dek is cute for a yautja 🐺
unlabelledView post →If you dig the Artemis stuff, watch First Man. Ryan Gosling is Neil Armstrong and delivers one of his best performances. Very underrated movie. I think it’s great.
unlabelledView post →We’re watching First Man. A film that boldly begins by kicking the audience in the kidneys as hard as it can.
unlabelledView post →Caught up with First Man, a film dramatising the emotional and family life of Neil Armstrong during his space missions career. Good to be reminded of what I admired about Americans. Decent, determined, ambitious and inspiring. Trump and Rubio thought it insufficiently patriotic. Well worth a watch
unlabelledView post →Movie 2 out of 30: “First Man” I’ve had this movie for 3-4 years and it’s good that I’m finally seeing it. I’ll probably only watch the first hour of this then finish the rest tomorrow. I really like Ryan Gosling, so I hope this is good. #filmsky #moviesky #promosky
unlabelledView post →I haven't done First Man, but I find guidance like that helpful - the film makes a choice to show it, and it matters (and might go beyond the Kennedy "Because it is hard!" ethos). If we ever do Song of the South, I will share my guide for that. #FirstMan #HATM
unlabelledView post →Then again, Variety's critic finds the film "infinitely more entertaining - and more revealing of American society" than Damien Chazelle’s First Man, "Hollywood’s more overtly hagiographic look at Apollo 11", a film I found superior in all departments. So clearly it's me who is out of step.
unlabelledView post →hot take: the ideal Hal Jordan Green Lantern movie would just be The Right Stuff, First Man, or Top Gun, but with superpowers
unlabelledView post →A film I love - has the same 'themes' as First Man (to quote Le Guin: 'The humanity of an astronaut is a liability, a weakness, irrelevant to his mission. An astronaut, he is not a being: he is an act. It is the act which counts') but is much weirder, funnier, and prettier
unlabelledView post →DAY 24 - a film by your favorite director #30DayFilmChallenge #FilmSky based on letterboxd ratings, Damien Chazelle is my favorite. First Man (2018) is such a gripping movie accompanied by a perfect score. it also features maybe the best aspect ratio change in any movie i’ve seen

unlabelledView post →Watching an old fifties B-Movie First Man Into Space; it's a bit meandering, but look who turned up for one scene! In my headcanon, it is the Master sneaking into this rocket base as part of one of his schemes... which would be a bit more interesting than the actual plot tbh.

unlabelledView post →Some vintage sci-fi/horror for me this evening, watching FIRST MAN INTO SPACE (1959). Clearly influenced by The Quatermass Xperiment, but I wonder if this film in turn helped to shape later stories about UFO-related cattle mutilation and even the Chupacabras?
unlabelledView post →Have you seen "First Man"? It's about the first moon landing - great film.
unlabelledView post →Houston, we have problem... no wait... wrong movie. Watching First Man with #HATM tonight, so space related puns may occur. Also, I highly rec the #HATM pod on First Man that was released last week (see thread for link). 🚀🌝

unlabelledView post →FIRST MAN this all started with a space movie so i thought i’d finish it off with a space movie as well. story about neil armstrong and i guess it’s technically a good movie but it is so american and basic i’ve seen this same movie a million times so i was kinda bored
unlabelledView post →Next up: First Man (2018) have not seen this movie before but I LOVE Ryan Gosling, so, there's that. Interesting subject matter. #filmsky #moviesky 📽 youtube.com/watch?v=PSoR...
unlabelledView post →FIRST MAN is a really good movie. More people should see it. Gosling gives a still but deep performance. The film is you-are-there: claustrophobic rattling spacecraft. The lunar surface sequence is magnificent.
unlabelledView post →After a recent scientific study reclassified the altitude at which Earth’s atmosphere ends, the title of “First Man In Space” now belongs to a man named Cave Johnson. When the movie Air Bud began generating buzz, the Academy Awards had to hastily implement a rule saying a dog couldn’t win an Oscar.
unlabelledView post →Depends. Worst experience? Definitely First Man. Not at bad movie at all but dear God the camera would NOT sit still I almost walked out cause i felt ill. Movie I hated the most? Jar Jar Abrams' 2009 Star Trek
unlabelledView post →A thing I’m unreasonably irritated about in the Project Hail Mary discourse is the total forgetting of the other Ryan Gosling goes to space movie, First Man. That’s such a great movie!
unlabelledView post →Keeping things in a spacey mood, I rewatched First Man last night. Interstellar gets all the love, and I enjoy it, but of the space movies made in the past 15 years, First Man is the better film. Gosling and Claire Foy are acting their asses off in the quietest, hardest ways possible.
unlabelledView post →First Man also has the benefit of being a well made, affecting movie for grown-ups!
unlabelledView post →#100HorrorMoviesIn92Days Day 58 (64/100): First Man into Space (1959) Found this one pretty fascinating! Sci-fi with a hint of horror, reallly dug the way this one unfolded. Very interesting stuff for its time, I can't help but wonder if I've seen a modern film with a similar premise. boxd.it/1oug

unlabelledView post →It’s so odd to me how the tone of “First Man,” the movie about Apollo 11, is all dark and brooding, starring an angsty Ryan Gosling, and Apollo 13 is this fun adventurous Tom Hanks movie. Like both of them are great movies, but it’s so funny that they feel tonally switched.

unlabelledView post →First Man isn’t a “bad” film. It’s not good but it’s no worse than fine, but Hurwitz score belonged on a mfking masterpiece! Like those touches of theremin are so gorgeous they’re uncouth 🤌🏾
