At first, the series was not universally held in high esteem. The Daily Mirror's review of the show in 1975 had the headline "Long John Short On Jokes". One critic of the show was Richard Ingrams, then television reviewer for The Spectator, who wrote a caustic piece condemning the programme. Cleese got his revenge by naming one of the guests in the second series "Mr Ingrams", who is caught in his room with a blow-up doll. However, many contemporary critics were effusive in their praise for the series. The Sunday Times called it "the funniest sitcom in years". Clive James writing in The Observer said the second episode had him "retching with laughter." Peter Fiddick also championed Fawlty…

Think Fawlty Towers, only instead of John Cleese it's Matthew Rhys and instead of a hotel it's a cursed Stephen King town with a history of horrific atrocities and The Fog That Stole Men's Souls

neutral · AI labelView post →- he said the show is bound to be a classic and loved. He compared it to Fawlty Towers, which had a very short run but is still loved (he also talked about showing his kids Fawlty Towers and Monty Python) - he would love to do Doctor Who, as an alien of course :D - all the franchises :D

The second, which is very English, is built around the agony of the embarrassing situation that can’t be escaped; Fawlty Towers, The Office.

neutral · AI labelView post →Fawlty Towers is a TV sitcom written by John Cleese and Connie Booth, originally broadcast on BBC2 in 1975 and 1979. The series is set in Fawlty Towers, a dysfunctional fictional hotel in the English seaside town of Torquay. The very 1st episode was broadcast on 19 Sept 1975. #FawltyTowers

Recently watched her in Mr Big, the rarely seen 1977 BBC sitcom about a family of incompetent criminals, made between series of Fawlty Towers. She was by far the best thing about it, often the case where Prunella Scales was concerned. RIP

BBC2 presents... Miles of Wiggles.

neutral · AI labelView post →There's understandably a lot of praise for Fawlty Towers today, but my favourite TV series of Prunella Scales remains After Henry. As I say in this article that I wrote for the show's 30th anniversary, it's PS's thoughtful performance that's key to its success. wearecult.rocks/after-henry-...
neutral · AI labelView post →Don’t mention how Fawlty Towers was quite a problematic show. I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.
neutral · AI labelView post →What a dark year it has been for the country, living in the shadow of John Cleese's threat of a new series of Fawlty Towers.
neutral · AI labelView post →It works both ways though. Theres no actual show called “Fawlty Towers”, we all made it up to catch out pretentious American comedy snobs who claim to have seen it.
neutral · AI labelView post →I have a half-baked theory that you can divide sitcoms into three broad formulas: The Single Monster (Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, The Office); The Unhealthy Dependency (Steptoe and Son, Peep Show, The Likely Lads) and The Ensemble (Friends, Cheers, The Green Wing).

She played her most famous role, Sybil Fawlty in the sitcom Fawlty Towers, over 2 series in 1975 and 1979, and Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett's A Question of Attribution, for which she was nominated for a British Academy Award. #PrunellaScales
