There are several mods on moddb that fix this issue. Otherwise this is on of the greatest single player shooters I have ever played. Every encounter feels like instant death with no warning, the way to progress is just by brute forcing it and dying a bunch of times until you figure out what to do. Controls feel massively unresponsive at times and something so simple as opening a door takes several attempts. I still remember being terrified of the monsters and playing constantly just to get better. This is one of those games that truly made me fall in love with gaming. By the way, it's no walk in the park, especially on the highest difficulty.
