Remember, White critics danced the Hucklebuck for this movie, and for ARMAGEDDON TIME, EMPIRE OF LIGHT and other recent movies where Black folks are treated as pawns. I was told I was overreacting. You know what my response was. www.bostonglobe.com/2023/05/18/a...

She has mental health issues, and her relationship with a young black guy (Micheal Ward) draws attention from bigots. I found the film uneven but touching, thanks largely to Colman.

unlabelledView post →Olivia Colman, Michael Ward, and Roger Deakins' cinematography deserve a better movie than the half-baked Empire of Light. At once moribund and lovely. Captivating in miniature sequences but struggles to articulate its Big Ideas in any meaningful way.
unlabelledView post →It's mostly just Drive My Car for me, very occasionally I'll switch over to Alice Coltrane's Lord of Lords or Miles Davis's Elevator to the Gallows score, three or four years ago I had a phase where it was only the Empire of Light score (never saw the movie, great score though) for like six months

unlabelledView post →I can’t tell you how much I love the film Empire of Light. It’s about friendship, the beauty and escapism of cinema, racism in the 1980s and the ravages of mental illness - and yet is so uplifting. It’s a personal favourite.
unlabelledView post →Such a good thread on an excellent film. I never made the connection with the key image and Empire of Light. Might explain why I couldn't stop looking at it in the Peggy Guggenheim in Venice this year
unlabelledView post →Empire of Light written and directed by Sam Mendes; starring Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward 1980s. An aging and depressed cinema manager falls in love with a younger black employee. Great cast, exquisite photography, subtle direction. The plot is a bit fragmented and unfocused with too many threads and themes. But each sequence is moving in its own right, enough to make the film worthwhile. Rating: B- #EmpireOfLight #MovieReview #Movies

Confetti is a silly movie but she boldly went full frontal, outstanding in Broadchurch, great fun in Wicked Little Letters, Empire of Light is great too, she has such range and really commits to her characters.
unlabelledView post →What I fancy watching, following Broadchurch, is Empire of Light with Olivia Coleman. Loved that film.

Met een voortreffelijke Olivia Colman in de hoofdrol. Feelgood, maar niet alleen dat. Gaat over zoveel meer. youtu.be/3JA3bD5xs-Q?...

unlabelledView post →Empire of Light - Come on general audience, why all the hate on this movie?! I liked it. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent a week in Margate during the first lockdown summer and the way I remember those locations with lockdown effect. Believe me, the town is almost the same it was in 1981. #Movies #CineMastodon #EmpireOfLight #OliviaColman

unlabelledView post →Empire of Light is a dark film about dark themes. Mental health, depression, racism, loneliness, and urban decay. If that hasn't made you gallop to the cinema to see it, then I don't know what will! Joking aside, there are some lighter moments in the connections made between characters. It's an okay, but ultimately forgettable film. 7/10. Which is my usual rating for films that are average. #Film #Cinemastodon #EmpireOfLight

unlabelledView post →Empire of Light. A film with a lukewarm reception and certainly one which was missold - but also one that's underrated in my view. The first half drags and feels no better than quite good. But once you reach the 65 minute mark it turns around. Provided you've cottoned onto what the film […]

It is just this delightfully odd children's book.

When the young "Stephen" (a strong and engaging performance from Micheal Ward) arrives, she takes him on a tour of the building and that takes them to the upper echelons of the building - now disused - where they discover an injured pigeon. They also discover something else, and soon are having bit of a clandestine affair. Thing is, she's also having one…
positive · AI labelView post →Trailer for #EmpireOfLight looks beautiful, and I'm thankful the #AndroidTV "Trending on #Google" feature reminded me about this now that it's streaming on #HBOMax. The low review score surprised me, so I skimmed #RottenTomatoes and most criticisms seemed plausible and reasonable. Part of Tara Brady's is so far off it's clear she lives in white denial. Even today, a huge percentage, if not still a majority, of white people refuse to acknowledge and accept the level of #racism that persists.

I’ve seen people compare it to Belfast which I really disliked and I think the difference is that this film managed to (whilst being a deeply personal story) be about something other than just the person making the film.
