Derange very much reminded me of some of my other favorite retro-style horror games, like Viviette, Camp Sunshine and The Count Lucanor. At first. These types of games tend to to offer the player "more"; these games do so much with so little. While not made up of shiny, state-of-the-art graphics, these smaller horror games often contain multiple endings, branching paths, multiple player characters, unlockable content, inventive combat systems, clever AI, and more interesting stories and…

I don't write reviews. This is my first. I'm not even going to review the game as I've only played 20 minutes. I will however review the developer. I'm 50+ years old, I remember Pong releasing (I had one), I remember the handheld football, I remember Pac-Man releasing and Space Invaders and my Atari 2600. In all those years and all those games I have never seen a developer as responsive as Dark Gaia. They answer Steam forum posts quickly, troubleshoot and fix bugs within hours of reports,…

A horrific experience for all the wrong reasons. Horrendous combat and puzzle design. Can't even finish it due to finite resources and overpowered enemies in the last chapter. And the only thing scary about it is it costs money

Selecting a new game will allow you to choose the game’s difficulty, Casual (weaker enemies with plenty of supplies). Survival (standard game difficulty) and Nightmare (deadlier enemies, scarce supplies). “His first words were: “don’t come for me.” We should have listened. It had been two years since we’d last seen Dr. Prestor. He had vanished off the face of the earth after leaving his post at the university. He hadn’t even bothered to tell us where he was going. He had always said he would…

******** TL;DR: The plot might as well be a direct rip off from the Resident Evil franchise with minor modifications. Add in massive plot holes and a combat system that you have no real control over, and the game is just a headache to play. ******** I enjoy games that base themselves off other franchises, but Derange feels like a complete rip off of the original two or three resident evil titles if you took those plots, mixed them together in a blender, and forgot to put the top back on. The…

Edit: I just realized this is by the same developer as Mythos: The Beginning and the One Night trilogy. Dark Gaia's improved with each game, and while I like the other two and would love a follow-up to Mythos, I think this is the strongest of the set. --- This is *very* close to straight up being a Resident Evil demake, and I don't think that's a bad thing. It follows the same concept---a biohazard thing has happened in a remote forested region---and there's branching paths, two protagonists…

A pixel horror adventure set in a haunted house. Although it may look like an RPG - It played more like a point and click, but with monsters to defeat... it's definitely more unique than it looks. https://youtu.be/hsuZ5XT8o9U

Yeeaaah Can't remember why I bought this, but I'm better off just watching someone else play this. I started replaying this from the start, It was just as boring as it was the first time I played it, got inside the building where the duo came up with the oh so brilliant idea to split up. Tried to fight a zombie to get a handle at the combat, died, respawned, tried making a map of my surrounding, got bored, moved on to something else. If you were going to make a demake of Resident Evil 2, I…

It was super fun to play this game. But, even though I finished the game (as Jessica) I didn't get the achievements, I only got the first two achievements (namely Enter the World of Survival Horror and Residence Evil) ;_; But anyhow, I would definitely recommend this lovecraftian horror game to anyone who enjoys a decent rpgmaker game.

So without mentioning the glitch that I found (considering its in beta) I gotta say this game was actually surprisingly high quality. For the 3 people who haven't ever played old school resident evil. That's exactly what this game feels like. What makes it even more similar to the game is how incredibly weak you feel through the melee system. If you decide to go with melee, it's entirely based around a randomized system so you could hit or be hit at the roll of a dice. For the entry price it's…

RPG Maker strikes again! Derange is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine…

I must say i really like the game and all, BUT after a certain time there is no way to get around the enemies which makes it really annoying. I havent played it to the end because its soo annoying. I you like a challenge its ok to buy but if you want to play a normal game youd be better of without it

Derange, developed by Dark Gaia Studios and published by GrabTheGames, is a survival horror title that pays homage to the classic horror games of the 1990s while infusing its own modern twists. Set in an eerie and isolated Gothic estate in rural Massachusetts, the game follows two college students, Jessica King and Nathan Romero, as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of their mentor, Dr. Edwin Prestor. From the outset, Derange establishes a thick atmosphere of suspense and dread,…

Meh.. half half. Looks like a copy of Resident Evil. The controls on the steam deck where kind of a sh*t and I needed to bind the keys bc I couldn't attack. The last chapter was kind of a mess due to the amount of enemies and the story was too predictable. Meh... not sure. Puzzles weren't that hard but the biggest problem has been the controls, moments in which the game told me that I could not use an object there when I was using the correct key and the combat that in my opinion was a little…

Zombies randomly respawned in rooms I had cleared, but bullets and other loot don't appear to do the same. The combat system is terrible, so to have sacrificed supplies and then have safe hallways suddenly become dangerous again was just frustrating.

Difficult but it was entertaining. Really needed a map for the house, it was very confusing to navigate. Combat is limited and partly chance. Still enjoyed it.

Such a wonderful game. For this price tag, I couldn't have asked for more. Dark Gaia went above and beyond polishing this game, and from what I saw, actively engages with the community, be that someone asking for help on the forums, or making a playthrough on YT. As for me, I really enjoyed it. Decided to play trough the game on the hardest difficulty for that true RE vibe, and I must admit it, they totally nailed it. From the vibe to the enemies, heck, even the character selection reminded me…

Yet another example of pretentious RPG Maker trash; encountered the phrase "WHAT THE HELL?!" within 5 mins of play, as is the law of all such RPG Maker games written by people who LARP instead of knowing how to actually write good character dialog and a good story. I got this in a bundle, so I'mma mad I gave this dev money.

Sadly, my current impressions of this game are that though it was well conceived and has a great deal of promise, its combat system is frustrating and doesn't respond the way that I expect it to. I do want to note that the dev has said that the combat is supposed to be a last resort--which makes sense for survival horror in general--but honestly, I'd just rather there be fewer enemies and no way to fight back than the system that was implemented. I'm not that far into the game and intend to…

I really like the Resident Evil-feel of the game's gameplay and story, being an RE-fan myself! :) I've even made two RE-inspired games myself: Surviving Horror 1: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/module/surviving-horror-1-v22-created-19th-october-2003 and Surviving Horror 2: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/module/surviving-horror-2-v26-created-9th-february-2006 Here's hoping you'll make a sequel to DERANGE or at least a similar RE-inspired game in the future! :P I'll buy it…

I have played the game for not so long. At first the game was exciting but as you go on with the gameplay it becomes a headache to play, they give you too many items to carry and the places you go are way too big. Also, I do not like the fighting mechanics at all.

I really liked this. It has a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle nods to Resident Evil. The combat can get quite difficult, it really just depends on how you play the game though. I had some difficulties with a few of the puzzles, but I'm not good at puzzles so there's that to consider.

This is an RPG Maker game and that is ok. For me it is really fun so far and before long 3 hours passed away like nothing. The combat is fickle yes but it is not the worst combat I have ever seen. The music and game play are really reminiscent of Resident Evil one which is an obvious influence. The controls are tight and so far I have really enjoyed the game, good music, ok combat (use a firearm) and fun to boot. I recommend this title!

I haven't finished Derange yet and I'm still eager to get a bit further in the game, but I've had a blast with it. It's clearly inspired by Resident Evil and old-school survival horror, but it does a lot of things well, despite being a smaller title (I was generally surprised by some of the elements that were done right, which are often stumbling blocks for AAA games) Honestly, deserves a lot more praise than it currently has and it's really worth it, if you're looking for that classic, tense…
