60 of 73 · most liked firstGod tier game. Got this for free because I streamed it, but now I wanna throw money at this dev so I bought the soundtrack. The graphics using higher than usual pixel resolution are incredibly artisanal. The gameplay is about as crisp and fun as a game inspired by Symphony of the Night can be. The sheer variety and quantity of all the areas and bosses is incredible. The balance of the enemies, your stats and the equipment is all incredibly precise and gives purpose to using most of the new…

If you enjoy retro style graphics combined with castlevania-like gameplay, you will definitely enjoy this one. The game starts off very side-scrollery but turns into a full blown metroidvania when you get about a third of the way through the game or so. It’s good to note, this title doesn’t hold your hand at all, which can be a turn-off for some players.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Warning: this review is NOT unbiased. I've been a tester and translator on the game long before it was released to the public, and I've known developer Migami for many years prior. That said, it doesn't mean I can't recognize some flaws, like a certain stiffness of the controls and the lack of some options; several players also reported issues with controllers. It may be a case of the engine and tools used being quite dated. I also agree that some of the instant deaths can be bad if you…

unlabelledView post →One of the worst Metroidvanias I've had the misfortune of playing. The spritework and music are (usually) strong points, but the game absolutely does not respect the player nor their time and lacks basic QOL you expect in the genre at this point. Past the beginning area there are many "new player traps": Pitfalls obscured by making it unclear if something is in the foreground or background, inescapable bosses appearing without warning so far above the player's level they mathematically can…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now and again a game comes along that makes you wish Steam had that neutral option and CotW is one such game. On paper this game is made for me; a fusion of visuals reminiscent of old school Castlevania (the MCs walking animation pays homage to the iconic Belmont strut) married to the traditional metroidvania framework established in SotN. The gameplay is also a blend of the two, with main character Mateo having the somewhat rigid feel of a Belmont but without the high commitment jumping. The…

Some of the best indies I've ever played. In release order, they are: Blade Chimera Koira Chronicles of the Wolf Wander Stars Check out the alt text in each pic for more info!
unlabelledView post →Just about the clumsiest and most awful Metroidvania I've played in a long time! The engine is rife with stalls, crashes, errors, and it doesn't stream well because the focus detaches when you're in a map or menu. The voice acting is passable, but not really a positive. The first time you go to save your game, you'll think its crashed. On many controllers you have to set it to steam gamepad input or it just won't work. The spritework is okay, not great. The music is okay, but occasionally ill…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finally, we have one of these that feels more inspired by Order of Ecclesia (and I suppose Simon's Quest) than the million games in this genre that seem to have thought that SOTN was the peak so why bother trying anything else. That's not to say that this game is especially bold or original mechanically or aesthetically. However, it's still easily one of the best search em' ups that has been made in the last decade. Incredibly well-thought out map design keeps the pace steady. Very little…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Right off the bat, if Metroidvanias are your thing, this is worth a play. Before I talk about the things the game does right, though, I want to get a few things out of the way: the game definitely screams "indie". There aren't any huge bugs or major problems with mechanics. However, there are a lot of little problems, most of which could be fixed with some independent play testing and a little more time in the oven. The movement speed always feels a tad slow. Jumping works, but it feels a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WARNING: This game actually needs an epilepsy warning. This is not a joke! I really wish I could recommend this game. The controls are tight, the game play is solid, however the overwhelming technical issues make it literally painful to play, both visually and on the audio. Every time I open the game I have struck by a very loud static sound for about half a second while the game fixates on a completely solid black screen. There are no audio controls. None. Not even a master volume,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i would give this game a 10/10. Everything is fantastic, its like a blend of old school castlevania but modernized. But why i cannot recomend the game is because of the clunky controlls. And i think that is fixable with some time. I wish the devs the very best, but please make the controls good so its enjoyable to play, at least for me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those cases where a neutral rating would be ideal, but if I have to lean one way, unfortunately I’ll have to go with a negative score. It’s clear the developers put a lot of heart into emulating the feel of classic Metroidvania titles. But visuals alone aren’t enough to rekindle the sensations those games evoked. Gameplay is key—and while this title certainly taps into retro vibes, that includes the good and the not-so-good. To me, there are just too many drawbacks: The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is probably the first time I have given such a lengthy review, but here it goes... I've read most of the reviews, including the negative ones, and I was a bit hesitant and intimidated to get the game at full price because of "how hard it was" or all the other "faults" people claimed it had. I've played other games by Migami, such as both Lecarde Chronicles and Wallachia. All 3 hard as balls(Though I really enjoyed Lecarde Chronicles 2 lol), so I figured I would be in for another…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, BEFORE YOU BUY, have in mind that the controls resemble those from original Castlevania series before SoTN, which for me is not a problem AT ALL it makes the experience more of a super Castlevania or even castleania chronicles, but still keep that on mind so you don't have a bad experience

I was Absolutely Hooked and i'll probably play it again in the near future (Also some of the story is attributed to the incredible gem of a movie titled: "The Brotherhood of the wolf" which I also Highly recommend. Quit wasting time reading comments and do yourself a favor and buy this game, 100% worth full price. Congratz Devs & Team!! THANK YOU
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This leans too heavy on nostalgia and has way too many inconvenient elements. I play pretty much every MV in existence, but the controls on this are clunky and a lot of map choices are just annoying. The pacing for unlocking new abilities is frustrating. The puzzles are much closer to the "let me just look for this on Youtube" levels of frustrating rather than trying to figure things out. The map is unlabeled so easy to do excessive backtracking in a game that already has a lot of backtracking.…

This game, and their previous free game Lecarde Chronicles 2, easily rival the best castlevanias made by Konami. Jeff and his band The High Rank Disciples will be performing songs from Chronicles of the Wolf🐺, a metroidvania-style game released last year🎮 set in 18th century France🇫🇷
unlabelledView post →Migami started making games since at least 1997, with fan games and free action games, and among them, they did a couple of Castlevania ones. Their second Castlevania fangame was already a metroidvania, 2001's Haunted Castle 3 - Trevor's Quest. If you check out their games, you can see a refinement process from starting with rather crude and rough games that got better and better. Over the years, they kept at it until 2017's The Lecarde Chronicles 2, another Castlevania metroidvania that was…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Every step of the way, I screamed "Yes" in conjunction with "Oh my god there's more?" - the game is definitely a roller coaster of Billy Mays. But....there's always a but. I geared up. Powered up, explored everywhere, got all the things. All the bosses had been varying degrees of challenging but nothing impossible. Then the final boss. No, not that final boss. Not that final boss. Not that final boss, either. But the final(?) final boss - it's literally over the top. For any other game -…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was loving this game despite quite a few annoyances with the design and controls, but they hadn't stopped me from enjoying it - up until one specific point that has now soured the entire experience and makes me not want to recommend it to anyone. I do want to preface this by saying that this section of the game is entirely optional and (as far as I know) not required for the best ending; but for me a big part of the enjoyment of Metroidvania-style games is getting that 100% completion. So…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love it already. This is the SOTN sequel I've always wanted. The other games that have claimed to be the next SOTN (Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, and so on) didn't really meet those expectations. All fantastic games, of course, but are their own things with their own mechanics and styles but COTW is straight SOTN. Feels just like it only bigger and better. Any Castlevania fan will feel right at home with this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, even better than Lecard 2, 10/10 if you understand the character is clunky because all those old vanias were like that. Multiple endings, nice weapon selection and sub weapon. Music is great too, at this point its hard to understand what people want, like that save room complain, dude this is not an arcade... when you die you die and you have to restart from the checkpoint LIKE EVERY F*CKING VANIA! Checkpoints are not that far from each other game is fair, unless you are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥.…

I played it and I still can't believe it. Yes, I don't care what anyone says, the cryptic, broken, unfair, day-night switching game that we reminisce about is here, Simon's Quest reborn.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Symphony of the Night on the Playstation, and it is one of my all time favorite games. Chronicles of the Wolf has been the only game that has came close to giving me that same feeling (once I got to the castle). The movement speed isn't as bad it appears. The controls aren't perfect, but never got in the way of progressing or caused frustration for me. Overall, just an excellent game especially at its price point. For 20 dollars (or less on sale), I would easily give this a 10 out…

After a bloody encounter with the Beast, your whole squad dies and aided by Maria a local huntress, you survive and…

unlabelledView post →At first, Chronicles of the Wolf feels like a basic Metroidvania with heavy inspirations from classic Castlevania games, but at around 30 to 40% in, it opens up into something amazing. It took me about 20 hours to 100% the game, and the endgame content is frustrating but rewarding. (Continued)
unlabelledView post →Chronicles of the Wolf looks like a pretty cool old school Castlevania style game.
unlabelledView post →Do you enjoy fun Metroidvanias? Then this game might not be for you. It's a competent, yet tedious, clone of better games. If ever there was a need for a neutral review option, it would be for this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →113) Chronicles of the Wolf Now this game I got at the start of the year and I finally got around to finishing it. This game does a great job paying homage to Castlevania while still doing its own thing. This game gets pretty difficult but it’s still fun. #justbeatit @polykillpodcast.bsky.social
unlabelledView post →This game is... OK. It would be an excellent Castlevania game if the controls weren't so sticky. Most of my frustration with this game is that I can't count on the game to do what I expect it to when I'm pushing buttons.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Couple more games. Chronicles of the Wolf is a Castlevania clone, and so far a pretty good one. I got it for $15 with Hotel Barcelona--stay away from that one, yikes. 3rd game should be here tomorrow. The Toaplan collection is an import, and it's really good. Great selection of games! #blutoid
unlabelledView post →Pros A very nice (yet loud) soundtrack Cons The fact that the map and inventory buttons are mapped to L2 and R2 without ever telling you. Why is the Y or Triangle key mapped to so many actions? I don't want to spend mana on a fireball when I am trying to air dash at low altitudes, Game likes to highlight new game rather than load game when you have an active save slot. And the worst one is that hit boxes are extremmely iffy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very solid and atmospheric Metroidvania stuck in an incredibly janky engine. In terms of gameplay and presentation - this is truly a gem. The exploration feels great, there are many MANY relics that either give you cool new abilities or open a path forward, or both, sometimes you have to use them in clever way or solve a puzzle to progress, it has everything a good metroidvania should have. In terms of atmosphere I think it accomplishes it better than any Castlevania ever did - game uses it's…

unlabelledView post →So this is a metroidvania, more specifically it's a clone of Symphony of the Night, and straight up it's like a new Igavania/SotN game, except better. Instead of being based on Dracula, it's an original setting based on Renaissance France and French folklore surrounding werewolves, namely the legendary Beast of Gevaudan. I see some reviews saying the controls are "clunky", and even some criticizing the visuals. To me this is insanity. It's a real pearls before swine situation. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good Castlevania clone, but a terrible game in technical terms, with no Steam Cloud, no quality-of-life improvements, problems running on Steam Deck, and an old, outdated engine. If you want to sell games, you need to use modern tools.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not the masterpiece, in my opinion, that many online Metroidvania enthusiasts have claimed it is, but it's a good game nonetheless. The movement speed is way too slow (especially considering the amount of backtracking required) and the jump never feels that great throughout (though, given the level design, I'm sure that's probably beyond fixing at this point). Cloud saves would be a nice addition; I can't be the only person who would have liked the ability to play this on both PC and Steam…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gorgeous world, frustrating execution. Chronicles of the Wolf is a moody, visually striking Metroidvania that leans hard into a 90s anime aesthetic and grotesque Gothic horror—an art direction I personally loved. The spritework is detailed and expressive, and the music is consistently strong throughout, with varied tracks that suit each area well. Unfortunately, those are also the game’s biggest strengths—and if those don't appeal to you, there's little else here worth enduring. The controls…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Generally enjoyed the game despite it feeling jankier than a true IGAvania, but the game becomes such a miserable slog towards the end that I've slowly grown to despise it. Great game if you really enjoy endlessly backtracking the same areas over and over again alongside some painfully bad boss fights. EDIT: Upon finishing the game with Ending A and looking back at things with a clearer mind, I generally enjoyed the game enough to probably recommend it and have changed my review to show that.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Been playing a game called Chronicles of the Wolf, and while it's a bit rough around the edges, I've been enjoying it. Like a halfway between old school Castlevania and Igavanias. One funny I don't know is intentional or not is how fast you go with the Slide compared to walking.

unlabelledView post →I had a lot of fun with this. It definitely scratched the Castlevania itch. Visiting the villages and interacting with the people also gave me some 80's roleplaying vibes (Faxanadu, Battle of Olympus etc.). Some mechanics seem to be outdated - if you die without saving after killing a boss, you have to do it again. There is also knockback, unavoidable deaths, missing map markers etc. But for me it is part of the retro experience and despite from beeing a challenging game, it is still much more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game does have good qualities but gets incredibly frustrating to play at times. Controlling Mateo feels like driving tank through a swamp and his vertical mobility is almost nonexistent. Most of the bosses are cakewalks, all those that aren't are mostly so because Mateo cannot get his apparent 200 kilo ass of the ground fast enough. You also get flashbanged every time you open either your map or inventory. Every time.
