This game was a miss for me. Overall, it's a pretty game and controls well (played entirely on Steam Deck). But, combat wasn't terribly exciting, nor did it meaningfully evolve. You get a few more tools, but more or less lots of guys rush at you. The game didn't have puzzles. Exploration is mostly moving along pathways and shooting or collecting the same binary items. Progression didn't feel particularly meaningful (because it does not really affect world traversal or combat). And the story…

BLACKTAIL is set in the wilderness of northern Eurasia, following the story of Yaga, a teenage exile searching for her lost sister Zora. Yaga and Zora are a pair of twins who were found in the wild as children, leading to the two being mocked as "foundlings" by the village folk. Unlike her sister, Yaga was born with a disfiguring birthmark, and chooses to wear a mask at all times. The motivation to find Zora is increasingly urgent, as a malevolent force known as Baba, has been disappearing…

As for the game itself, I’m very satisfied. I love jumping into something unknown with an unusual story that pulls me in, and this game absolutely did that. It doesn’t feel like a copy of anything — it really has its own identity, something fresh that you don’t often see in other games. That’s exactly why I liked it so much. I even love the visuals — they feel like someone painted the world on a canvas, especially the sky, which really stood out to me. The overall style and story are both very…

The morality system changing the way you interact with the world at a fundamental level was very interesting and I would love to see it expanded on. Two major criticisms: the path not affecting the ending was a big miss to me, and the title progression was often very unclear. Solid game, I had fun! Devs if you see this you guys should do an FPS defense game, that gnoll cave siege was a standout.

"Fie, fie, the Russian smell was never heard of nor caught sight of here, but it has come by itself." Blacktail is a solid RPG with beautiful fairytale graphics and ingenious map design that draws heavily from Slavic folklore. The environments are lush and atmospheric forests feel alive with birdsong, insects, and eerie whispers, creating a strong sense of immersion. The morality system is an unusual addition. Your choices, whether merciful or ruthless, shift your stance toward good or evil…

Pros and cons are down below) You can check out my video here for the vibes (but it contains spoilers): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbfIfP1cpgA Pros: 1. The vibes! It's a dark magical fairytale which follows the make up of Baba Yaga from Slavic folklore. The world is immersive, the npc s are so much fun, unique and mystical. As I mentioned in my video a bunch of times, the game really did remind me of Alice: Madness Returns in the best way possible. It's very different but very similar…

Very interesting idea but very poor execution. Insanely messy, fighting is not satisfying at all and nothing is explained well. No straightforward progression while at the same time no real free roam due to lack of explanation. World exploration is quite tedious because the paths are barely visible and terrain clipping is unfair.

What a potentially good game, amazing art, story telling. BUT, the game tells you almost nothing (leaving you trapped in failure), and what it does tell you is vague. I changed it to Story Mode and it was pointless, as you wandered around the same creatures attack you over and over and over making progress a tedious slog. The combat/controls are bad, sprint/dash worked only half the time resulting in death, and the FOV is bad for some reason. I finally got trapped in one of the platformer…

It has been some time since I've seen a game with such unbelievably stupid controls. Well, as pretty as the game looks, this one is one of those. But the weirdest and possibly the worst decision here was to put an american accent, american idioms and other mundane, modern phrases into a tale from Slavic folklore. If she didn't speak so often, perhaps I'd try. But the unnecessary vulgarisms here and there and dialogues that feel like they were written by a teenager, it all just makes it…

While the aesthetics are quite to my taste, the rest of the game isn't. Performance isn't what I would expect (not very smooth). While I'm typing this I'm loooking at the trailer playing on the store page and you could almost make yourself believe, it was a fast-paced cool arrow shooting game. Don't be fooled. The "intense archery combat" is only intense, because it feels so sluggish to shoot an actual arrow and you're trying to avoid getting hit by walking backwards, jumping, doing whatever…

After reading other reviews, I have to agree with the general consensus. The absolute strongest points of the game are definitely the narrative and the dialogue; it's clear the developers put a ton of effort into them. The setting is also very interesting and unique, and the soundtrack is fantastic. On the downside, the combat is probably the weakest link since it gets very repetitive. You only ever get three types of arrows, so there isn't a huge variety of powers. Progress feels more like…

BABA YAGA! An interesting Western Slavic take on the Baba Yaga mythology with some spoofs of other fairy tails thrown in, which may remind a lot of people of how The Witcher did it. You've got your Snow White, your Sleeping Beauty, your Snegurochka... and of course there's some knight-on-dragon action (in a way), a hut on chicken legs for you to make home, and lots of mystical mysteries to untangle. To wit: two twin orphans, Yaga and Zora, are raised in a village until their teens,…

I think I have to describe this game as... American McGee's Baba Yaga. This is definitely a game in the spirit of American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns. It's got that quirky look to the world and character design, with charming voice acting and character personalities. Side quests are absurd, but in a good way. It's got its own sense of humor too. Combat was simple and fun enough, but not very demanding, though there's a few times where you have to use the skills available…

Blacktail Falls Short of Its Promising Premise I went into Blacktail excited by the concept—a dark, folklore-inspired story with archery combat and a coming-of-age narrative—but the game ultimately fails to live up to its potential. Combat is the first major disappointment. Archery, the game’s core mechanic, feels stiff and unintuitive. Enemies are either annoyingly bullet-spongy or ridiculously easy to take down, leading to a frustratingly inconsistent experience. Melee combat is even worse,…

Recommended. A folklore-drenched origin tale whose morality system genuinely reshapes its storybook world, whose twisted fairy-tale lore enchants, and whose mechanical roughness never quite breaks the spell. A gorgeous little dark fairy tale. Choices alter which quests and characters appear, and an early evil reputation can be undone through good deeds, changing quests retroactively. Slavic mythology runs deep, journal entries corrupt classic fairy tales into something darker, 2D memory…

It starts a bit slow and directionless, but it picks up after an hour or two. Beautiful art, voice acting and story. The traversal is cool, open world is filled with stuff to discover and the combat is decent to good, although not exceptionally so. The dark and personal retelling of Slavic mythologic is unique and very well done, it reminds me vaguely of American Mcgee's Alice. I'm surprised at how competent and polished this indie title is 8/10

I've seen negative reviews for this game saying that it's boring or there's no direction. I can only assume these people don't like story-driven games or just want their hands held throughout. Which is fine for them. But the game is gorgeous and the soundtrack is fire. The story is well though out and fantastical while revolving around a few compelling mysteries: who is the Baba, where is Zora, and what happened to those missing children? It's definitely worth buying and playing.

Pros: - Set in rich Slavic folklore with lush forests, old ruins and creepy areas contained in four big zones for you to explore - The story pertains to the tales of witches of the forest and its fantastical and human inhabitants carrying a serious tone with enough of comedic relief, told in great fantasy book cut scenes - Good music and superb AAA voice acting (everything is voice acted…

BLACKTAIL is an RPG that blends exploration, crafting, and magic into a dark and atmospheric experience inspired by Slavic folklore. This isn’t a cheerful story but rather a grim journey filled with tough moral decisions. You will need to pick a side and it's pretty straightforward but some of the boss choices are worded in ways that you may pick the wrong morality. Since these are timed and you can't pause - if you want to make sure you don't pick wrong - you can pause at any point in the long wind up to the choice and verify. The good…

I like the idea of Blacktail, but it doesn't feel like the designers were able to decide what they were making -- too silly to be serious, too dark to be light-hearted, too restricted to be open-world, too heavy on sidetracking and exploration to be story-driven, too linear to be choice-driven. And a rather arbitrary morality slider -- be cruel or kind mostly to random woodland creatures and fairtyale beings for small rewards, rather than meaningful choices.
