Black Rain
Two New York cops get involved in a gang war between members of the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia. They arrest one of their killers and are ordered to escort him back to Japan. However, in Japan he manages to escape, and as they try to track him down, they get deeper and deeper into the Japanese Mafia scene and they have to learn that they can only win by playing the game—the Japanese way. I talked to him over lunch, to tie in with the release of BLACK RAIN (1989) for the short-lived but mostly excellent newspaper The Sunday Correspondent, where I was film critic from 1989 to 1990. He was congenial company IIRC.
unlabelledView post →Movie idea: Japan should produce remakes of some of those bananas late 1980s Hollywood movies like Gung Ho and Black Rain, but with the latent economic anxiety (and semi overt xenophobia) in reverse.
unlabelledView post →A great scene from Dandadan. Are you watching? (Ken Takakura is a famous actor from yakuza movies and the film Black Rain that the girl idolizes, and the boy happens to share the name randomly.)

unlabelledView post →Once a high grossing movie at the box office in Japan, now mostly forgotten; unjustly so. This cop thriller was the first Japanese movie to be filmed in the US and features a great cast from both countries; more than a decade before Black Rain. Funnily, Yusaku Matsuda was in both. #filmsky #japan

unlabelledView post →I'll be honest, part of me is okay with this if the target is all those chucklefucks who, every July and August, celebrate Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Make them watch this film. and Black Rain. and Barefoot Gen. Again and again and again. Make them watch what happened to those who lived on Bikini Atoll
unlabelledView post →Dark and savage movie that becomes more relentless as time progresses. Great performance by Yusaku Matsuda, whom I've only ever known as Sato from Black Rain. I've seen him in another 4-5 movies this year and he's spectacular in everything. #filmsky #japan #physicalmedia #thebeasttodie #radiance
unlabelledView post →Black Rain (1989) I love it when Ridley decides to make a Tony Scott movie. The casting of Miyuki Ono begs the question: has Ridley seen Evil Dead Trap?

But somehow in only having this one bad movie to talk about, we end up fucking on one. So enjoy the energy! Listen now at exportaud.io.

unlabelledView post →The folks at Foma have tried to explain the "Black Rain" by saying that it results from stress on the a delicate emulsion from film transport mechanisms. There isn't a much more stress-free film transport mechanism than hand cranking on my Duo Six-20 and using the red windows.
unlabelledView post →Tonight’s Film Selection🎬🎥🎞️: Ridley Scott’s 1989 “Black Rain”. Michael Douglas & Andy Garcia are great as a pair of American Police Detectives caught in the middle of a Japanese Crime War. A great take on the “fish out of water” genre.
unlabelledView post →That thing when your buddy Jed Ayres surprises you with the movie novelization of BLACK RAIN as a care package & you start wondering who you can rope into doing a dramatic reading of it with you on the pod. ("911, babe, 911!") Note: We covered the film in Watch With Jen S4: E28.
unlabelledView post →Executive Decision & Black Rain get mentioned so often by me that they’ve both become punchlines by this point, lol, but yeah, any movie where Joe Morton & Oliver Platt save the day to rocks.
unlabelledView post →Godzilla VS Biollante, a beautiful film. feels properly *1989* too, like Batman and Black Rain. Tarantino talked for years of making a film about living in Tokyo under the threat of Godzilla & they do it here perfectly: people eating in the Godzilla memorial restaurant, built in his footprint

unlabelledView post →Look, Black Rain is a corny garbage movie, but how dare you imply that he uses anything except the raw rock n roll power of an '80s renegade cop to beat the bad guy
unlabelledView post →I just watched this 80's movie with Michael Douglas called "Black Rain," wherein he travels to Japan and takes on the local Yakuza with his hardboiled American wiles. Wasn't anything special. In fact, the fact that it was so unremarkable makes it really disappointing! It's 80's Japan, cmon!
unlabelledView post →I went into Black Rain expecting a cheesy 80s action movie. However, it exceeded my expectations. This is Michael Douglas teaming up with Golgo 13 going up against the inspo for Spike Spiegel. It’s better than it has any right to be. Still wished it had a city pop soundtrack…

Entre le rock FM de Greg Allman, un film policier full of clichés et ce Japon entre modernité et tradition, je n'ai pas été déçue 😬🙄😝

unlabelledView post →I'm still reeling from seeing Imamura's Black Rain on Sunday. It's one of the more disturbing films. Captures a trauma so intense that it freezes in time everyone impacted. Including the movie itself, which (made in the late 80s) convincingly recreates the aesthetics of 50s Japanese melodrama!

A drunken night with the Sumiyoshi crime clan ended at near dawn with Garcia performing yubitsume, the ritual removal of part of a digit. Worse, it was the wrong finger!

unlabelledView post →Mine is Black Rain, which I'd not even heard of and is some sort of cop/yakuza action movie. Not too encouraging.
unlabelledView post →Hmm, true, it seems it’s been maybe overshadowed by the uniqueness of the atomic bombs? Akiyuki Nosaka’s Grave of the Fireflies comes to mind, also a Ghibli movie. Iirc that was about the firebombings im Kobe. And I think Black Rain by Masuji Ibuse mentions them at least. The Makioka Sisters too.
