Black Forest
Developer Lemuria
Danger, death, and despair define Black Forest. As the chief of an unlucky village, your goal is to survive. Gather resources, shore up the village, then survive the terrifying night. Maybe you'll hold out long enough for relief to arrive. Maybe not. Are you up to the challenge? From the Steam store page

60 of 76 · most liked firstThis game seemed fine at first and I enjoyed what I played of the tutorial. However, gameplay was a little frustrating when monsters appeared at night and wiped out numerous food sources and other buildings. I also thought it was odd that I couldn't manually save. It's supposed to save automatically each morning. However, I played for a while and then when I returned a couple of days later there was no way to continue where I left off. I had to restart all over again. When I play games like…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game, but holy hell is it ever the Dark Souls of a survival builder. The mini-scenarios that you can change the difficulty on are fun the play around with and quite do-able. But the main campaign is damn near impossible. The enemies attack too early, too often, and too heavily for you to do more than frantically paddle while barely treading water. You are barely able to get anything set up before being first attacked, and from that point the attacks are relentless -…

unlabelledView post →I once got (playfully) scolded by a boardgame designer for claiming that 'the more boring the theme, the better the game'. It's obviously an exaggeration, but... kinda true? Brass, Power Grid, Agricola, Pipeline, My Village, Autobahn, Black Forest... all rather dry themes, all great games.
unlabelledView post →As some of you might know from the other place, I'm a massive Uwe Rosenberg fan. Got his new game Black Forest to the table today 😀
unlabelledView post →The game is too difficult, there is constant attacks night by night, Rangers and archers are useless. it takes way more time to build or rebuild the structures than to be destroyed by the monsters and animals. there is potential here but the challenge is so high that is disencouraging. I won't play again until full release.

unlabelledView post →The game's promising so far, but I think the description of the buildings could use some fine tuning to help avoid player frustration. I rage quit a couple times and only kept trying to improve my gameplay because I'm stubborn. - Housing tiers: there isn't enough cost-benefit reward for building better housing. A stone house will get knocked down by a 3-5 kobolds nearly as easily as a regular old hut even though they take upwards of 2-4x the time, resources, and people to build. When I first…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't even know where to start on this. Game mechanics aren't there. The outline for what the game wants to be is there, but is poorly executed. "Guards" constantly get stuck on buildings or in a fight animation loop that makes them worthless. Being able to only hire 2 guards and 2 archers when the game wants to send 14 wolves, 6 rats, a bear and a troll at you makes them worthless. This should be delegated to the population while being able to hire mercenaries. Game functionality is clunky,…

unlabelledView post →Played Black Forest last night & bloody hell it's good. Glass Road is a great game but for my group it needed a bit more crunch & Black Forest elevates its mechanisms amazingly. Managing that wheel whilst also using the worker placement and building your estate creates a fiendish puzzle #boardgames

unlabelledView post →This game is just to much. Way to hard. It's a good concept, but the dev has no clue how to do it right. Been playing building games for years and this is the worst one yet. The difficulty settings makes no difference at all. Went from free to a paid game with no changes to make it worth buying. Skip this one people. Wasn't worth it when it was free.

unlabelledView post →I first started playing this game in late December of 2021 when it was a free "Early Access" game. I only played it about three weeks, then gave up and uninstalled it because of all the bugs. It was, hands down, the buggiest game I've ever played on Steam. I finally installed it again about ten weeks ago in order to give it another try. Surely it's a finely-polished game by now. Nope. Nothing's changed in that regard. I've come across at least fifteen different bugs in the last ten weeks…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Could of been a great game. Very limited on what you can do. Either you play the few scenario's they give you that you don't have time to defend or build anything. I get making it hard but you can't even enjoy building and doing anything before you get attacked. You build wood walls and wolfs run right through them and break them you have to build so much but it doesn't matter every night things come to destroy them before you can even build things to defend and the things you can build are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, this is currently a free game - That said, I have no issue with the simple graphics. They're rather expected for the game type. I went so far as the potential troll attack in the tutorial before I got frustrated with the slow un-intuitive building and controls. The mouse wheel is slow and clunky, and pans the camera at an angle instead of zooming in and out, and seems to like to stick. Building anything can't be a planned out action, as you can't even out line walls, fields, etc.…

A lack of combat is one issue I have, the inability to stop invasions is another. Raided by goblins in the night, burning buildings down and stealing things BUT NO PEASANT WILL FIGHT THEM??? Yeah cause people just sleep through the night ignoring an attacking horde. They have farm and construction tools but won't use them as weapons... Got a depo built the 2nd day that night the goblins burned it to the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review is for the free, incomplete early access game. As such, it seems bug-free, so far. I've only been playing it for about ten hours, but I can say I'm finding it surprisingly enjoyable (I say "surprisingly", because I expected to be bored to tears by yet another 'Banished' / 'Settlers' / 'Ostriv' style game.) Black Forest is different enough to bring some fresh interest for me. It's simple, and has some unique aspects, including the addition of various nocturnal monsters and ravagers…

My mate did better and won 60-48. Second play of it and it's getting better each time. Possibly may become my second favourite Uwe #boardgames

We finished the night with a two player game of King of the Dice. Fun games and a good time with my son. #boardgames

I hope you really won't get taken advantage of by a publisher and I hope I will see you visiting another Meetup too, bc. It'd be cool talking. I also will share this on my social media account, that more people see it. To make it short I think this is an easy recommendation for a free game, for the free tag it is extremely solid and I…

unlabelledView post →I am thoroughly impressed by Black Forest. The game's unique focus on defense and survival creates an intense and immersive experience. The strategic depth required to manage resources, make tough decisions, and fend off relentless creatures keeps you constantly engaged. The robust simulation features add layers of complexity that make each playthrough unique. Highly recommended for fans of city-building and survival games who are looking for a fresh and challenging experience.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is weird and buggy. Doesn't matter what I have done, game was just punishing me. There is no scaling, with each day you get more monsters attacking your village and fewer villagers as they die. Wooden or stone walls, doesn't matter they will get destroyed or even walked through (bug). No time to gather resources because your reinforcements are building 2 days. What is funny, game has pretty bad graphics, worse than many games I play, but GPU runs on max???

I came across it in my library, sitting there untouched, and decided to give it a try. It's an interesting game concept, and I appreciate the developer's originality here. The tutorial is mind-numbingly boring so I gave up on it after half an hour or so and just started an easy scenario. I had learned enough from the tutorial at that point to fumble my way through…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is quite interesting so far! I do like the mechanics for the most part, though in some cases they're a little clunky or not well thought out. For example, there are often monster raids during the night, but walls are too expensive to build. You have a limited number of peasants to manage, and a lot of them are locked in to work on walls for a very long time, often unable to finish the walls before raids occur. As such, some buildings get wrecked, need repairing and so the peasants…
