This is not a mainstream Arkham game, this is a spin-off game that came out on a console that is 10x weaker than any console or PC that the Arkham games were initially released on. This is supposed to give you a taste of the story, gameplay and so on of the Arkham games, and this does that just fine. It's a fun little treat to have amongst the main course meals that are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Normally when I write reviews for games on steam I write a joke. But this game has been so wrongfully panned for over a decade. People hate it because it isn't 3D. Who cares. This is a metriodvania not an action adventure game. Is chivalry 2 a bad game because is doesn't have guns? NO! Just because one game has something doesn't mean all others should have it too! This is a fine metriodvania. It stands toe to toe with the likes of Metriod fusion and Castlevania Symphony of the night. This…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - Deluxe Edition takes the familiar foundations of the Arkham series and reshapes them into a smaller, side-scrolling action-adventure built around exploration, stealth, combat, and gadget-based progression. Developed by Armature Studio and published by WB Games, it feels less like a conventional sequel and more like an experimental companion to Arkham Origins. Instead of giving Batman a large three-dimensional city to explore, the game confines most of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - Deluxe Edition is an interesting yet flawed side entry in the Arkham franchise. Originally developed for handheld consoles, this "Deluxe Edition" brings the 2.5D Metroidvania-style gameplay to PC and consoles — with mixed results. The story picks up shortly after the events of Arkham Origins. Blackgate Prison is in chaos after a massive riot, and three villains — Joker, Penguin, and Black Mask — have carved out territories inside the prison. Batman must…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - Deluxe Edition Hardcore Batman fan here - The principle of this game is great, had high hopes for this game, but I just felt that the execution, the clunkiness of it, the poorly rendered levels/cutscenes, the level design; all of it sometimes left a lot to be desired. While the game is ok, it really doesn't play all that well. To give you an example, sometimes I'd be pressing the vault button with a lot of proper timing in mind, not button mashing like…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game could have been incredible if it was made with tought and care. This is simply a Batman Arkham Origins 2D mod, it sounds amazing but it's horrible. It seems ok in the first 30 mins but only gets worse as more poorly implemented mechanics add up. Playing it is a struggle, navigating the map is a torture. It's truly impressive how they managed to mess up such a great idea. Do NOT play this even if you're a hardcore batman fan, it's best to watch the story on YouTube.

unlabelledView post →Okay, look. All of my other reviews are jokes and for fun, but this one is serious. Okay, first off, I like the camera angle while exploring the prison. It reminds me of the older Resident Evil games a bit, and I can appreciate the novelty. The rest of the game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ass sucking donkey ♥♥♥♥ at a bus stop in St Louis. The stealth? Ass. The combat? Unplayable. The bosses? All terrible except Black Mask, and made me wish I was playing the real Arkham Origins instead. Let me preface this by…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At six hours, I fully get why some found this game disappointing. It's the only game in Arkham series where you CAN'T fly around looking for random bad guys to beat up. And it offers only as much immersion as you would expect from a platfom-jumper, which is to say almost none. But that's not to say it isn't fun. You just have to understand what you're buying. Clearly the game is modeled after the 2.5D segments of the Arkham games (e.g. avoiding Scarecrow in Asylum, escaping Mad Hatter's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a decent game, the metroidvania aspects aren't too harsh on you, but there are many times where you might have to search a youtube tutorial to find your way. Combat is definitely simplified compared to the other games as well, so its a bit easier then the other games. I wouldn't play it unless I wanted to play all the Arkham games, and which I did.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It could be a fun short game, but it has many terrible mechanics and badly designed boss fights, which make it hard to recommend

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Genuinely an absolute pain to try and play. The 2D sidescroll playstyle was kinda neat for the prologue, but it's incredibly annoying while trying to navigate Blackgate. Worse still, the 2D plane can reeeeeally mess up combat flow. Attacks you'd nail as easily as breathing in the mainline Arkham games? Oh no you missed that by a mile and Generic Joker Thug #39 just booped your Bat-snoot! Don't even get me started on trying to navigate the damn rabbit warren of a prison. There seems to be so…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely abysmal. Couldn't even finish the game it was so bad. I am a lifelong fan of the Arkham series and have known about this game since it came out. I always figured the hate was because it was so different from the rest, so I was very excited to give it a shot. Upon nearly completing the story, I realized it is just so much worse than a change in perspective. For starters, the map is an actual labyrinth. It is damn near impossible to navigate it, what with the camera constantly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is nothing wrong with this game. There is something wrong with your expectations for this game. Okay, there's one thing wrong. The map is absolute ass, even when you learn how to use it. But other than that this is a fun game for what it is. It was made for the Nintendo 3DS handheld. You can't expect it to be on the same level as the Arkham games that were made for PC and consoles. It had to work on minimal hardware. This is one of the games that I didn't play for a long time because I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually don't do any negative reviews, even when the game is genuinely bad, but this one deserves special treatment... this sh*t is so f*cking terrible that I want to wash my brain just to forget that this game ever existed. terrible design, the cut-scenes look like sh*t with sh*tty animations, it has a f*cking input lag that makes it almost impossible to counter-attack at the right time in some quick-time events, along with the worst mini-map I've ever seen in a game and the most boring…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was not a fun game. This used the Arkham combat and movement system but in 2d. It does not work well at all. The map was bad and took a while to get used to the changing perspectives in game. Story didn't add anything. Bad game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate was a game originally designed and released for the PSVITA and the Nintendo 3DS, it's a 2.5D metroidvania game set in the Batman Arkham Series. Unfortunately the gameplay doesn't translate well to mouse and keyboard controls. However if you can get past that hurdle, there's a lot to love about this game. It has a beautiful comic book art style in the cutscenes and is extremely expansive when it comes to the overall lore of the Arkham series. If you love Batman…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The black sheep of the Batman Arkham series. I don't know if it's because it's ported from a handheld, but so much about this is broken and tedious. I'm talking about combat (it simply does not work), the map (it makes no physical sence), stealth encounters (they just don't work as well in 2D) and boss battles (esp. Penguin fight). Really the bread and butter of the Arkham series. I had a terrible time playing it. There are definitely great ideas here, but just incredibly bad execution. Even if…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate Review Overview Took me a little time to get used to. I am not usually into this type of game, but it being Batman with some Arkham DNA made me try it. I ended up having an okay time. It is not perfect, but a simplified slice of Arkham stealth and freeflow kept me going. Think of it like a decent side dish for Arkham Origins rather than a main course. What It Is A 2.5D Metroidvania style spin off set inside Blackgate Penitentiary. Side scrolling presentation…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Batman: Arkham Origins - Blackgate is a “headache inducing Metroidvania simulator” developed by Armitage Studio, a company composed of various different Retro Studio employees (Metroid Prime). Seldom knowledge seems to be known about the actual development, but from what I can scrounge the technology was built from the ground up (minus using The Bluepoint Engine by Bluepoint Games) between both the Playstation Vita version and the Nintendo 3DS version. The main differences between both of these…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I initially gave this a negative review because I found the game as annoying as hell. The game fluctuates between being a boringly easy tunnel game, to pull your hair out frustrating, cant work out where I'm supposed to go! And then there's the scan everything all the time, which bugs. But remember, this game was originally designed for the PS Vita and the scanning makes much more sense with a touch screen, it doesnt transfer so well to mouse and keyboard. But then, I ended up maxing the game…

unlabelledView post →This game is a port from handheld consoles, it is not open world, basically is an attempt to bring handheld players to the PC Arkham Series, if you treat it exactly as what it is, it won't disappoint, expect backtracking, a lot of it. At the end of the day it is Metroidvania in its core. Good to add to the story of Batman Arkhamverse.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having read Steam reviews, I expected this game to be horrible, but it was anything but. It's quite enjoyable and unputdownable, non-linear and highly replayable (which is a big plus since you need to finish the base game once and NG+ twice to unlock all the achievements). Sure, it's not City or Asylum, but still its 2,5D feel a lot closer to 3 than to 2. Combat is simplified, wuth only ground takedown and beatdown available as special moves, but it's more than enough since the main focus here…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hilala I didn't have the motivation to play this game on my desktop PC, but managed to push through a few hours on my Steam Deck, given its 2.5D nature. This is easily the worst entry in the Arkham series, and I genuinely can't understand why they bothered porting it. The soundtrack is recycled from previous games, the stealth is awful, and you're forced to scan every single object before you can interact with it. Don't waste your time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I worked through Blackgate because completing the whole series in order felt like the right thing to do. Having now finished it, I wish someone had told me earlier that there was genuinely nothing here I needed to experience. If I had to describe it in a few words, I'd say it's the one entry in the series that forgets what made everything else work. Three months after Origins, Batman arrives at Blackgate Prison where Joker, Penguin, and Black Mask have each taken over a section of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The original Batman Arkham Asylum was very Metroidvania-like. This 2.5D adventure is even more so. It has the prototypical Metroidvania map, powerups, backtracking, and hidden collectibles the genre is known for. It also has some degree of freedom in how you tackle each area of the game; you aren't fully forced into going after the 3 big bads in a specific order, which is nice. The combat is a passable facsimile of the 3D Arkham games, but forced into a 2D plane. It is a bit clunky/stiff, but…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hey, remember all of the things about the Arkham series we know and love? Yeah, imagine that but somehow they suck. Making the game in a 2D format sounded interesting in theory, but man this game feels like a chore. The gameplay is sluggish, the story isn't super interesting, (but granted there wasn't much they could have done here); the performances, they're not bad, but nothing really stands out. There's almost ZERO continuity or reference to this, even within the other games. And this might…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty middle of the road 2.5D metroidvania that doesn’t really do anything new or special outside of trying (and kind of failing) to translate the Arkham gameplay to 2D. Combat is especially rough, you have no combo meter or quickfire gadgets and a lot of the time you just don’t hit who you’re trying to even if the control stick is aimed in the right direction. Stealth is better, but not by much, for a lot of the same reasons combat isn’t all that great. You don’t get nearly as much variety…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okay well, it's not the same style as the other Arkham games, and that's perfectly fine however it turned a lot of people off from playing this. I think on a sale, (the arkham games are all usually on sale for like 5 dollars every now and again) it's a good game to pick up. Theres no cutscenes the story is okay at most and the camera is fixed in a 2.5d style. However if you go into the game expecting it to be like that, it's a okay game. I would recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This feels like an introduction to the Arkham games, like, most mechanics are here in a simplified way and it's a fun way to get into the vibe of the main games. See it like... an appetizer to the main course. Of course, if you play this after the Arkham trilogy it all feels a bit stale and redundant. But overall it's ok I guess. It kinda reminds me of Mark of the Ninja but in the Batman universe. And uglier.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ever wondered what an Arkham game would be like if it were mixed with a Metroid game? Armature Studios have you covered.😁 Which makes sense because I learned that after completing Metroid Prime 3 the game and art directors, plus the principle technology engineer left Retro Studios and founded Armature in 2008. This is a 2.5D side scrolling metroidvania Batman game. You don’t need to have played any of the other Arkham games because the story stands alone. What attracted me to this game was…

It’s fun actually to play Batman in some sort of 2D (2,5D) world. The story is nothing special and the abilities and gadgets you get are limited. But… This is why it’s only recommended when 75% off (and I think the Steam rating (mixed) is a perfect reflection of this game): The game is notoriously inconsistent. I play(ed) through it with a…
