Astro Boy
Set in the futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy (Atom) is a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he had lost. Unable to fulfill his creator's expectations, Astro embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before returning to save Metro City and reconcile with the father who rejected him. Enough material is public (including a storyboard page) to get an idea of Kon's plan. We explore: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/inside-sat...

unlabelledView post →Just watched the first episode of Astro Boy (2003). I see why each episode apparently cost more than $250,000 haha. Movie-quality animation the entire time. Also props for using cel animation for a show in 2003.

It Is Astro Boy

unlabelledView post →Oh, this is the film that was initially released as Cleopatra: Queen of Sex in the United States in a cynical attempt to— Astro Boy! :) —which of course was completely removed from the context of the larger animerama trilogy including Belladonna of— is that a gun?

Cheesy in-jokes for parents. Product placement I think? I guess it’s interesting that they ripped off Battle Angel Alita’s scrapyard plotline

unlabelledView post →I was hoping to see some The Legend Of Zelda movie footage today, not just a logo. Remember when Imagi Studios (who did the CG-animated TMNT and Astro Boy movies) pitched a CG-animated Zelda movie, and Nintendo didn't go for it?
unlabelledView post →Mind you that the TMNT film of 2007 was actually a financial hit and did commercially well. The only things that stopped their plans in making a sequel were 1: Nickelodeon buying the rights to TMNT, and 2: Imagi Studios closing down after Astro Boy.

unlabelledView post →Thread below of me live reacting to the "meh" 2009 Astro Boy movie late last night And here's a pic of Tenma rejecting his robot son over a game of Monopoly in the unauthorized comics from the 80s, since I'm going to experience every Astro Boy wether I like it or not
unlabelledView post →Short article from 1999 about the purchase of the film rights for Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy by Jim Henson Pictures, which was owned by Sony.
unlabelledView post →Just thinking about the cancelled films from Imagi....it's just sad that this underrated studio had plans for more movies until Astro Boy flopped which made the company shut down for good. They were going to make a Zelda movie, a Gatchaman movie, and a robot movie called T28. So much promise...gone.

unlabelledView post →Was always hoping he’d pop up in an anime dub at some point, maybe one of those high budget GKIDS or WB dubs, but to date the closest he’s ever gotten was the 2009 Astro Boy film.
unlabelledView post →I bought the Official Movie Prequel Astro Boy the Movie comic at a flea market, and I gotta be honest - there was love for the subject and era, but the story was mid at best. However, I dont know if Ashley Wood is on this platform, but - my god - look at these! So rad! What a legend!
unlabelledView post →On the one hand, _all_ anime and cartoons are dubs. Duh. On the other, I think the last decade of English dubs have mostly been brilliant. But then I thought the same for Astro Boy in the 80s or Akira in the 90s. 🤷♂️ Some dubs are poorly done or made bad by external factors (politics, budget, half arsed production, retconning, etc), but that's not a problem with the practice of dubbing.

unlabelledView post →yes it’s an animated movie by same person who made Astro Boy! Well, specifically the movie is an adaptation of a work created by Osamu Tezuka the creator of Astro Boy technically speaking but yes!
unlabelledView post →Astro Boy is the last cameo I would have expected in this movie, even if it is a Tezuka story. #SpaceApeCinema
unlabelledView post →I'm reminded of that thing where Osamu Tezuka said he got the idea for Astro Boy from Bambi, and the subsequent musing that AI could never do that AI could never be inspired by a Disney film from pre-1950 to create the entire genre of Japanese Anime
unlabelledView post →It will always astonish me how tech bros manage to make things I've always found cool and make them lame. Sci-fi cars? Toasters with wheels. Space exploration? Broken rockets. Synthetic Intelligence? Dumb A.I. thief machines. It's like watching Patrick Bateman kill Astro Boy.
unlabelledView post →In 2009 there was a CG animated children's movie adaptation of Astro Boy with an all-star cast, and the first act follows a young boy main character who gets vaporized in an accident, and the rest of the movie follows an identical robot that his grief-stricken father creates to have his memories
unlabelledView post →if you see this post a robot here's one of my favorite robot's ever and its from the ASTRO BOY MOVIE
unlabelledView post →This is fucking amazeballs...also reminds me of something Osamu Tezuka would draw. He created Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, Dororo (No, not Dorohedoro), and Black Jack. That one's my favorite besides the movie Metropolis...which is a WHOLE nother can of worms...
unlabelledView post →Watched Tezuka's Cleopatra (1970), a bizarre, timetraveling sex farce, complete with Osomatsu, Gegege, and Astro Boy references.
unlabelledView post →Watching the 2003 Astro Boy anime (on ep 12/50 rn) and omg this is so peak. I only knew Astro as a kid from the 2009 movie, so seeing him in his more canon form is epic. I also ordered the first two manga and they should be in soon!! Obsession back in full swing, I’m afraid lol
unlabelledView post →The second short on Princess Iron Fan is live! Considered the first Asian animated film, it had a huge impact on Osamu Tezuka, leading to such accomplishments as Sacred Sailors and Astro Boy.
unlabelledView post →This project is what would eventually become the 2009 CGI Astro Boy film, but not before at least 2 screenplays were written and scrapped, including one by Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack, and writer/director of The Powerpuff Girls.)
unlabelledView post →Yeah, Atom only had the one TV series, a franchise would require an "Astro Boy 2" and a "Return of Astro Boy", etc. I'd argue Cyborg 009 might be first; films in '66 and '67, a 1968 series, a 1979 series, a 1980 movie...
unlabelledView post →Happy 97th birthday Osamu Tezuka! there so many title i loved to read and watch like Astro Boy that reminds me, Tamori-sensei In his childhood day was impressed by "The Film Lives On" that aspired him to become a manga artist if not because of that popolocrois will never exists!
unlabelledView post →Thanks for the reply and explanation. Very interesting! I too have my own weird pop culture oddities I obsess over (like my complicated relationship with the 2009 Astro Boy film being one of 50 kids who read the manga before seeing it in theaters).
unlabelledView post →Also love that like. Literally every other iteration of Astro Boy/Mighty Atom, Tobin Tenma dies in a car accident. The 2009 film goes the extra mile by having Toby Tenma get FUCKING VAPORIZED in front of his dad's eyes.

unlabelledView post →No! PLUTO is based on Osamu Tezuka's most famous ASTRO BOY story, THE STRONGEST ROBOT IN THE WORLD, and was reimagined as a sci-fi film noir murder mystery by Naoki Urasawa. The manga was recently turned into an 8 episode anime on Netflix! Pluto is the horned robot...the strongest in the world.
unlabelledView post →Those Mill Creek sampler and vault film sets are always great little buys. The Pop Culture Bento Box has a little double dipping from their previous From the Vault DVD set but also a few extra movies and some 2003 Astro Boy and Godzilla 98 animated. The From the Vault blu is pure 50s monster gold.
unlabelledView post →My criticism is just from watching 1/5 of it: 1. There is no backstory when starting the movie; this is not like Osamu Tezuka's style of telling a story. Works such as Astro Boy, Unico, Big X, and, of course, Princess Knight tell their backstories in the first chapter.
unlabelledView post →You know, seeing the Astro Boy movie again makes me think that Tobio's death was worse in it than the anime Like being hit by a car sucks but being evaporated basically? That's terrifying as hell
unlabelledView post →As someone who's familiar with Astro Boy not just the character, but his animes and even the movie I can confidently say he's absolutely worth adding to your anime watchlist.
