What people are saying

Mixed: praised as a classic but plagued by technical issues.

Many players praise the game as a classic with a great story and atmosphere, but note it feels dated and repetitive. Some call it a masterpiece that deserves a remake. [4][6][15]

However, widespread technical issues—constant freezing, crashes, and the need for fan patches—ruin the experience. Some players say the Steam release is unplayable without fixes. [1][25][27][31]

Praised story and atmosphere · classic status · parkour and setting

THIS GAME DOES NOT WORK BY JUST BUYING IT. you have to download 2 things and mess in the game files before you can even play the game as newer PC's causes this game to crash before the logos load. even after you get the game to run you need to make sure you do not have the game on more than 60FPS and Vsync ON or your leap of faiths won't end well. the hay turns into rocks (not literally) and you'll just die. if you follow this guide you'll get it to work though:…

♥♥♥♥ Ubisoft This game is cool and all, revisiting it should be a cool experience since I last played it as a kid who didn't even know english. I was excited, only to find freezes on a game that is 18 years, old, constant crashes because the game is trying to connect to a server that don't exist anymore, and absolutly zero ♥♥♥♥♥ given about by the developer. I love the AC games, but every single day I question myself why I still give money to this deranged scumbag collective of a company.

Revisiting the Ezio trilogy gave me the urge to try the original Assassin's Creed again, more than a decade after last fully completing it. Unfortunately, getting the game to work properly is a bit of a headache. The game tries to ping now defunct Ubisoft servers, causing crashes on startup. You can block the exe in Windows Firewall from pinging, which gets it past the Ubisoft logo sequence. But this does not resolve everything. Now you're in the game, but it will freeze recurringly as it is…

tl;dr A series classic, "pilot episode" or "AC2 beta version", with interesting story, but can feel very dated with many issues compared to anything later in the series, after all, this game was originally released in 2008, so I would only recommend this game only if you are big fans of AC series, or big fans or old (or clunky) games in general. I have finished the whole story in one day, took around 10 hours total. Completionist can take around 20 - 25 hrs total (with story included), but it…

Game freezes constantly unless you go into Local C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts and paste this 216.98.50.240 127.0.0.1 onto a new line at the bottom. Once that's fixed it runs well. AC1 is just as good now as it was in 2007. You may have to run notepad as an administrator then search for "All files" once you go to that folder so you can see it. Paste that IP address in there and the game won't stutter anymore. Unfortunately it happens because the game is trying to connect to servers…

This is my FAVORITE Assassin's Creed game. I didn't play them as they were coming out, in fact my first AC was Origins. That being said, I am obsessed with the story, concepts, and themes of the game. I think that this is the ONLY Assassin's Creed to actually engage with it's philosophical core incredibly well, with the exception of Black Flag. So why do I not recommend it? I simply shouldn't have to go on a wild goose chase to get the game into a playable state. Every issue I patched brought…

Looks like Ubisoft left this one to rot. After reading loads of information on the internet in relation to the game freezing, this is what is the main issue. The game is trying to contact a server that no longer exists and that causes the game to freeze and bug out. I found numerous fixes including but not limited to: - editing the hostfile of your PC - updating DirectX - installing old .net dll - turing off internet connection Tried all of them, but nothing seems to be working for me. I kid you not, playing a pirated copy of this game will give you a better experience than playing it in a legit way The game will freeze on you for a second or two every 3 minutes of playing because it's trying to send some statistic data to a server that doesn't exist no more which can be solved by a simple patch from Ubizft

I'm sure there is a great game here, but it is insanely broken and does not play well with modern hardware. I had spent one day figuring out why my game was not launching and then another two as to why it was a stutterfest. Given the game is so old, it has bugs. One of the most common issues is crashing immediately upon launch & freezing during gameplay. This and most other bugs can be easily fixed by launching the game from the dedicated DX10 or DX9 executables using steam launch options (copy paste: "AssassinsCreed_Dx10" %command%) but this fix is not guaranteed to work for everyone. As for the gameplay itself, it was fun but it does get repetitive because many of the missions are the same. Never played a game…

I should probably start with the flaws first. Being an older game now, some of the models and textures are quite dated but no issues with me but I can see that for other players. The story can sometimes be very repetitive too. also the combat can feel very janky at times too. But besides a few issues you will get from an older title, I personally enjoyed my time playing this one. It was something new and fun for that time (Before Ubi milked the sh!t out of this series). The game is really good, especially given how old it is. However, i can't recommend it at this state. It freezes for a few seconds every 1-2 minutes. They say that it has something to do with Ubisoft connect. Whatever the issue is, i didn't manage to fix it in 1-1.5 hour, so i refuse to put more effort into this. I tried to push through the freezing, but it is really annoying. I only managed to play 4 hours or smth. Anyway, can't recommend at this state.

Ubisoft can't bother fixing their game, don't bother if you don't want to configure files, it's unplayable without modification. Unlike others, I was able to launch the game fine but it would freeze for 5 seconds at a time at least once a minute. After researching and testing fixes for too long to reach acceptable performance, I found that "Assassin's Creed Lag Fix" from Nexus was the only thing that worked for me(It changes 2 files...). (Fix the AC1 stuttering/freezing issue below) The AC1 story just adds to the AC franchise and in my opinion you should still play this to understand the full story when playing your way through the full franchise. Some sections of the game can be annoying and repetitive but remember it is an old game and still deserves its props. Nothing Felt Like This Back Then Assassin's Creed first caught my attention through someone who was heavily into parkour. At the time, the idea of freely climbing buildings and moving across rooftops already sounded fascinating. Add the Crusades as a setting and it was hard not to be interested. The first installment of this long-running series almost feels like a prototype for what the series would later become. It’s not necessarily the best entry, although at the time of its release it was definitely a very enjoyable and ahead-of-its-time title. Altaïr is certainly a good character, although he didn’t have much depth, which makes him less interesting compared to his successors. The open world has something to offer, but not a whole lot. I recently played Assassin's Creed and I have to say, for a game released in 2008, it’s honestly one of the most beautiful games of its time. The graphics in general are way better than you would expect from that era. The cities, the atmosphere, the lighting – for 2008, this was way ahead of its time. Yes, the gameplay can become repetitive, and yes, its age shows in places. The hands are blocky, some character models are stiff, and a few animations haven't aged gracefully. Yes, the parkour is still fantastic, the core concept and setting is still great. Set during the Crusades with cities like Acre, Dalmascus and Jerusalem make for a great setting. this game's actually good. some missions are a bit repetitive and certain cutscenes are longer than usual, but other than that it's hated for no reason. a true classic

I can't stress enough that you should not buy this game. It will be buggy, glitchy, and require many third party patches to get up and running in 2026. I don't care if it's 90% on sale. This is a dead game, and these companies should do better. If they know it doesn't work, don't list it for sale. Easy as that.

I really thoroughly enjoyed this game. It's by far my favorite game in the AC franchise. Are its controls clunky? Yes. Are its graphics outdated? Extremely. Can Altair swim? No. At least, not in this game. And yet... Altair is the sole reason to give the game a try. That said, the game cannot handle modern hardware without some tweaks, as Ubisoft was too lazy to implement a fully functioning PC port. If you have an NVIDIA GPU, limit it to 59 FPS in control panel. And whatever the AMD…
