unlabelledView post →I fear I must draw the line at referring to a 1634 death as "Hamnet-era." Not only because ye gods must we but because that would be like referring to A Room with a View as a World War II–era movie.
unlabelledView post →My musical tribute to Maggie Smith, who has died aged 89. A true legend of stage and screen. I loved her in A Room With A View. So, from the film, here is the music of Puccini to accompany memories of Dame Maggie. youtu.be/0N7xO5TA91c

unlabelledView post →6. A Room with a View. Another Inwood theater obsession. The movie played longer there than anywhere in the US, 13 months. I saw it at least 15 times there. Usually Sunday afternoon. Saw the same church ladies over and over. They LOVED the bathing scene at the pond.

Her brilliant film credits include The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, California Suite, A Room with a View, the Harry Potter series, and of course Downton Abbey. A stunning talent. Ms. Smith was 89.
unlabelledView post →#NowWatching THE REMAINS OF THE DAY (1993). Director: James Ivory. Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson. Admittedly, I have soft spot for the classy Ivory/Merchant films. Streak including A Room With A View (86), Howard's End (92), & this film is sheer bliss. All approach perfection for me. #filmsky 📽
unlabelledView post →One of the twins just read A Room with a View so we watched the film and jeez it’s so good. Maggie Smith superb, Daniel Day Lewis remarkably restrained, Helen Bonham Carter completely wonderful (her face!) and I’d forgotten how good Rupert Graves is as Freddie.
unlabelledView post →[The thing I learn and relearn is that even people who worship the novel don't know that the film exists, and I always need to rectify that. I'd say that it's neck and neck with A Room with a View for the most exquisitely, thoughtfully rendered film of a novel.]
unlabelledView post →#NowWatching A ROOM WITH A VIEW (1986). Director: James Ivory. Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith. One of my favorite Merchant Ivory productions, lushly romantic travelogue is gorgeous & funny. Playful nude frolic with Julian Sands & Rupert Graves delights. #filmsky 📽 Criterion Collection 775
unlabelledView post →Watching I Capture the Castle (2003) after reading the novel recently, absolutely holds up to the magic of the book. Best adaptation I've watched since A Room With A View* *Apart from Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, in which rare case I feel the film is better than the novel

unlabelledView post →Dame Maggie Smith is one of my favorite actors. I've you've never seen The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, you should rectify that ASAP. Or A Room with a View (my all-time favorite movie).
unlabelledView post →The entire cast of 1985's A Room with a View. Usually when a book I love is adapted into a film, the actors' portrayals pale in comparison to those conjured up in my mind when reading it, but in this case the exquisitely cast film characterizations actually supplanted my mental imagery.
unlabelledView post →1986 was a great year for film btw. Sid & Nancy, Vagabond, Round Midnight, Mona Lisa, Blue Velvet, A Room With a View. Platoon is one I've never rewatched. Very well done, albeit a bit manipulative, as Stone always is. The Fly is iconic. I'm still partial to the original.
unlabelledView post →The first movie I ever saw Maggie Smith in. I’ve watched A Room With A View so many times that at one I point I had the entire movie dialog memorized. Will miss her talents
unlabelledView post →A Room with a View (1985) Still favorite rewatchable #movie of all time. Wonderful book, script, director, actors, music and settings. Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Helena Bonham-Carter, Daniel Day-Lewis, Julian Sands, Rupert Graves, Simon Callow and my fave Denholm Elliot. HBOMax for those in US

unlabelledView post →Took a movie round to watch with Mum (A Room with a View which we enjoyed together in the 80s). It was a good way to spend a couple of no-pressure hours. She’s obviously declining physically but seemed quite ‘present’ today - lots of wanting to hold hands and gazing into faces.

unlabelledView post →Reading A Room with a View in close juxtaposition with watching the movie is fascinating, noting the things that RPJ focused on and retained and the things she discarded. I recommend the same process for Rosemary's Baby, novel and film, because it's mind-blowing.
unlabelledView post →#filmsky Ah, Florence, a city of remarkable beauty. Filmmakers sure have noticed: James Ivory caught its charm in A Room With A View, and the city lent an eerie ambiance to Ridley Scott’s horror film Hannibal. You can even go back to Rossellini’s Paisa (1946) to see the city once patrolled by Nazis

If you heard my recitation of the film version of CRIMES OF THE HEART or A ROOM WITH A VIEW you'd be calling in a 5150.
unlabelledView post →I always thought that by the time of the Merchant-Ivory era, particularly from A Room with a View on, everybody decided to get serious and do better by period hair and makeup, but maybe in years to come that movie will scream 1985 to those in the know.
