A Most Violent Year
A thriller set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city's history, and centered on the lives of an immigrant and his family trying to expand their business and capitalize on opportunities as the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built. He was building a great resume ("Pariah", "Arrival", "A Most Violent Year") and after doing a Star Wars movie, he just stopped working for some reason. A decade later he's doing MBJ's "The Thomas Crown Affair".

unlabelledView post →Somehow, this was my first time seeing A Most Violent Year and I’m not sure how it took me this long. Really enjoyed it. Oscar Isaac is fantastic, Jessica Chastain is great and the whole thing has this slow burning tense atmosphere that feels like a crime film from the 70’s.

However, I think his lead role in Pu-239 is worth considering – it's an only okay movie but adapts a story I really like. And A Most Violent Year only came out a year after Llewyn, but I think it's anything but typecasting. A terrific role.

unlabelledView post →Has anyone seen A Most Violent Year? It's among my favorites of Chastain's films; Oscar Isaac is excellent as well. I feel like the film is overlooked. I loved it--a tense crime thriller that feels plucked straight out of the 70s (though it's 1981). Some deeply emotional and human moments, too.

unlabelledView post →366 Days of Film: Day 252 - A Most Violent Year. Early 80’s NYC and Oscar Isaac’s Abel is struggling to keep a lid on a crime family war. A slow boiler where you’re just waiting for the lid to fly. And waiting… Like a pared back The Godfather or a deadly serious The Sopranos. Great script but slow.
unlabelledView post →A Most Violent Year (2014): This is so close to being an incredible movie, let down by the unimaginative script and the analogy(?) with capitalism being just a bit too on the nose. I'll watch a basically unlimited number of low stakes crime thrillers like this though 3.5/5

unlabelledView post →A Most Violent Year took a long time to get me hooked, but once I was able to come around to it I was fully invested. Oscar Isaac is fantastic in this movie. He was able to balance the intimidating front of a mobster while being able to present a sense of honesty as he was trying to avoid the more barbaric business practice of his contemporaries. It was a fine line, but it was a joy to see the mobster slowly start to take over as his desperation increased. Jessica Chastain was really good as…
