Don't buy this if you're looking for a nakige like a Key VN. Don't buy this if you're looking for an "epic awesome" experience like the Grisaia series. Buy this if you're looking for a VN that portrays realistic, empathetic characters, thought-provoking themes, meaningful choices, and significantly different endings based off of those choices, ranging from unpleasant…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, somehow I expected A Light in the Dark to be slightly different although I appreciate the serious topics it describes. Sometimes we just think way too little about people who might have it a lot harder than we do and instead just nitpick about small happenings. Of course, I think achieving complete happiness sounds a bit unrealistic as stressful situations will always come up, yet there is still a difference to just appreciate what we already have. However, during playing, I didn’t exactly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not a bad game. Simply not worth the price. If you include the free demo, I put about six hours total into this game for the "good" ending and the true ending. The story is mostly captivating, the characters are sympathetic, and the music score is solid all-around. Fairness, social class structure, the wealthy vs poor- this game has a strong message it wants to portray, and it usually does it well when combined with the music. Some problems though. As is typical with the genre…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Light in the Dark is a gripping visual novel with a number of nice features. What was absolutely new for me is the time limit for choices. I've never seen anything like this before. I'm not even sure what to think about it. On the one hand, it does feel like real-life conversation where you need to give an immediate answer without contemplating for too long, but on the other hand – no time to ponder on the best choice, at first I didn't even manage to read all the text + options astonished…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →[Not really any spoilers you can't gleam from the PV] I don't know why (Asian/anime) literature thinks saying "this sounds like a cliche movie/manga trope" gets them out of having the trope as a point in their story. A Light in the Dark does this several times in fact. All accompanied by a stark 50+% of all dialogue options jamming the motif of poverty and unfair birthrights down your throat, from beginning till end, bouncing around the plot because there's nothing else to talk about. Several…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rich people bad and it's okay to commit a serious crime if you're poor, ♥♥♥♥ other people's feelings and trauma. On a more serious note, the music was good for the game and the message wasn't bad but I felt like I was reading an after school special. I couldn't stand the villain, she reminded me of a classmate who always ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about a friend of ours having more money than her even though she suffered abuse and knew about it, but money apparently solves everything. I only felt bad for the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, I just want to clarify that, if what you're looking for is an extensive VN, this might not be your game. Low replayability, 7 hours long at most, no routes and poor choices. It's one of those games that once you play once you pretty much are done with and will never play again. That being said however, the characters aren't flat, the score is just nice and the story isn't terrible. It's just a nice little VN to go through for once and get something from. That being said it's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an interesting concept with mildly poor execution. While most of the writing is passable, it tends to be overly preachy about baby's-first-social-issues and tends to tell the player what characters are thinking rather than showing it to the player through dialogue or action. 4/10.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: + Gorgeous art + Good UI Cons: - Generic characters - Boring story In-depth: One of those cases where I wish Steam allowed for some sort of a middle ground, because I really don't want to give this game a negative, nor a positive review. If I'm being completely honest here, this game is a bit dull and uninspired. The characters are cute, but utterly generic. The story is very predictable and straightforward, with no emotional ups and downs, with no twists, just one solid idea…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely recommended if you like VN's with darker themes. Here are some key points without spoiling the story: The commentary on society and social classes wasn't terribly revolutionary, but this isn't some academic disseration. It continues to remain engaging and serve as an excellent device for developments between the characters. I think this is an example of a VN handling serious subjects gracefully. Despite the relatively short length of the VN, the two main characters…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good art for an indie visual novel and a really unique premise, but unfortunately that's where the positives end. It's overly preachy and simplistic about issues it wants to portray, with the same few talking points shoved down your throat a billion times with slightly different wording. While the atmosphere is very unique when it comes to visual novels, the writing is super repetitive and the number of hours I put in (about 10 hrs including offline time) really isn't indicative about…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If there is a neutral option here, I would probably include this game in that category. I don’t really against this VN. Artwork and music background are well presented here. I couldn’t ask for more. Both can express emotion and situation perfectly. Some artwork probably doesn't look optimal yet, but I didn’t find that disturbing. I will also never forget to mention the sprites that with no doubt are clear and expressive. Music background that changed accordingly also accompanying me well during…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stockholm syndrome VN featuring 2 female kidnappers and a boy as they debates about Socioeconomics and the divide between Lower Class Citizen and HIgh Class Citizen as they find mutual understanding as normal people. Very short, and delivers a pretty good story. Would recommend on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art is great, the soundtrack is very immersive. And the new ending.... The new ending made me love this game even more. I have stockholm syndrome now... Thanks game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wasn't sure to expect when I started this. I downloaded it without reading the synopsis so I was in for a surprise. This isn't a light/happy VN where you finish having had a grand adventure, solved a mystery, and loving all the characters - it's a gritty portrayal of some sad, desperate lives that leaves you feeling sad, empathetic, and wishing to change the world. I do recommend the game, because it's an interesting VN experience that differs from the norm.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story isn't even that complicated. It's two poor girls that kidnap a "rich" kid unloved by his parents that ends up developing Stockholms. While I understand what they were going for, the game gets annoyingly preachy, ruining any sense of flow it had. I hated everyone by the end of it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- No real story depth - Tame character development - Way too much focus on the social message + More dynamic than your average visual novel (choices and actions) + Good art style (It portrays everything the plot want to express) That's my experience, finishing the game with that okay feeling, that the game could be more, have more depth, isn't a bad game per say, but nothing that will make an impression on you.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly this is just "capitalism is terrible and alienating to everyone involved" the game. Without ever directly saying it. Everyone seems to think that capitalism is just the way things are and the natural order in here which makes this a depressing slogfest. I couldn't really relate to the characters either which didn't help. Verdict? Depressing? and essentially pointless since it never actually points out that the real issue is capitalism, and just moans about the world being unfair.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: -unique story line (about a ransom) Cons: -the player is told to accomplish certain tasks, yet the ideal ending involves NOT doing them. This confuses the player. -the story places a lot of moral weight on society and does not consider things outside of society as part of the values of life. It strangely feels "communist" as a result. -the story has a lot of possibilities that are shutdown by "the heroine doesn't want to." This causes it to feel unrealistic and a bit forced. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a mild recommendation. The story has an interesting premise : 2 poor girls kidnapping the son of a CEO. The gameplay is more interactive than your average visual novel ; you have a stamina bar and a limited number of actions : you can chat, rest or observe. You can't do everything, will you prioritize studying the apartment for a way to escape, resting your wounds or trying to learn more about your kidnappers by chatting ? In practice it's fairly simple to do the right things and I got…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is pretty good visual novel. Interesting characters and realistic writing. It is a bit short, but it is still fantastic game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played the game to completion, including the new ending after Ending 0. There are a few grammatical errors here and there in the latter half of the game, including a few lines of dialogue that are just empty space and one that is probably the reference code for the line that should be displayed, but it didn't detract from experiencing the whole story from start to finish. There are also a few plot points still left unexplained in more detail, and the extra ending only has 2 extra CGs and no…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tfw no asian girl to kidnap you and beat you within an inch of your life. With the ever increasing divide between the naive left and the idiotic right this game could really teach people a thing or two about empathy for those on the other side of tracks. except for islamists. Those barbarians can all die for all I care.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid soundtrack, sympathetic characters, tragic circumstances. The pacing and story-telling are en pointe. Character reactions, behaviour and dialogue are believable. Also, the art is good. It's worth a buy if you are interested in a somewhat thought-provoking, emotion-stirring but ultimately nonconsequential outcome, a good game to enjoy for a few hours. What else have you save helpless rage?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be honest initially I expected the plot to be quite different (the Steam page made it appear to me like some apocalyptic suspense action lol), I was surprised that it ended up so close to reality. Although I definitely enjoyed it regardless and it actually evoked that "reality-check"-like sense of emptiness within me. Firstly, I really adore the art and music, they perfectly capture the setting's ambience and story's emotions. The plot itself is almost absurdly simple yet manages to create…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is sadly no way to make them kiss. But otherwise the story was quite interesting and made me feel emotions in my cold dead heart. Even if that was mostly pity. Most of the spelling errors and bugs exist in the secret ending, it's philosophical underpinnings in this story is also a lot weaker than the other endings since it seems to run counter to the conversation that the MC has with Big Sis.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm gonna get the pros out of the way first: - Great art, this game is beautiful - Great mechanics (some variations which is nice to see in a visual novel) - The voice acting they recently added is good The big con: - The writing It's way too repetitive for a game this short. I understand wanting a powerful message, but if every scene is just the same thing over and over again, it just weakens the message and makes your characters seem bland. Since it's supposed to be the strong point…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You think everyone wants to kidnap you and day when it'll eventually happen is around the corner? Boy, oh, boy, I have a novel for you. + Story is pretty refreshing if you're tired of all those otome/bishoujo novels. + Good quality backgrounds, considering that camera sometimes zooms into them and moves around (which I've seen in some other novels, and it's bad when quality is low enough that when it zooms in on it, you get to see bunch of giant pixels). - Unskipable end credits after main…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it made me more depressed since i am in the same situation as hers currently.. it made me feel like.. i was facing my self or simply looking at the mirror.. the anger and frustration she felt towards those who have more income than hers, the situation with jobs and so on.. a father that left a debt and as an oldest sibling taking care of the younger siblings.. it was exactly like that super similar.. so ... i wouldnt really recommend this honestly.. anyways thanks but no thanks for the game :)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you have never experienced a Visual Novel you should give this gem a try. A Light in the Dark was my first VN and even though it is not a very long story it is until today my favourite VN with it's emotional depth. The story feels real and the topic of A Light in the Dark is very unique. The soundtrack is awesome and the art fits very well. Maybe it is a bit hard and subtile to reach every ending and you might need a guide to reach all of them but for the main story every detail about the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not good. The dialogue is cringy, unbelievable and unlikable. The character development falls flat; don't tell me the background in a passing, show me. The text seems rushed at best in that there are clearly (Chinese?) sayings/proverbs and sentence constructs that were translated verbatim and either don't make much sense or feel quite unnatural.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate reality thanks 10/10 Edit: good ending makes me hate reality a bit less now. Thanks dev
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its brief and hits hard. No fluff just a good story
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simply put, if you're getting tired of all the "happy-go-lucky" visual novels popping up everywhere with trivial plots, this is for you. Now the asking price for the game is a slight bit high imho, ( i think $10 would be acceptable, 15 is a bit much for a fairly short vn with no voice overs) but the storyline, and dark tone really was a breath of fresh air for me. Dialogue was well done (Short of a couple grammatical errors) and characters were believable. The soundtrack was solid and held up…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I honestly loved the game. It has some very simple quick time events that really make you choose what you would really do in the situations your character would be put through. It also has a similar feel to those old style mystery games when you use certain tools. (PLEASE THIS IS A SPOILER DO NOT MOVE ON, IT'S A PERSONAL CRITICISM OF THE GAMES ENDING AND SHOULD ONLY BE READ BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE FINISHED IT OR DEVELOPERS AS POSSIBLY AN UPDATE) I do not care for the lack of good endings. I know…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little story and alotta pros if u like being kidnapped and beaten by anime women. No kinkshaming ofc i thoroughly enjoyed it myself ;)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very intriguing story, a good combination of dark and sad
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Negatives: Some really weird phrasings; Only the true ending gives a satisfying conclusion (pretty standard for these kinds of VN's but I still hate it. Luckily wasn't as bad as 999). Positives: Everything else. Thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended. Totally worth Kickstarting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually don't write reviews but I find myself compelled to do so for this game. I'll say this, it's games like this one that make me love visual novel games. The art work is fantastic, the soundtrack is amazing, great characters/character development, and a compelling story. But more than that, this is one of the few games that made me feel very emotionally attached to the characters and even brought me to tears (I'll let anyone reading this figure out whether in joy or sadness). All in all,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8.5/10 The best of it: Character developing feels natural and not forced. None of the characters involved in the story change their mind overnight. Great art, nice music. *Extra points for being an indie. The worst of it: 2 DAMN SHORT MAN. Stockholm Syndrome may kick yer chin if you're sensitive, but it won't hit too hard because the VN is too short to make you want to protecc the characters. 5/3/2020 Update The new ending was everything I needed. Thank you. 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the first VN I have officially played through and I enjoyed every bit of it. I've always loved multiple endings and wanted to see each outcome during my gameplay. The music was amazing to listen to and highlighted the emotions in the scene very clearly. The character art is superb and very unique compared to other VNs I have seen, and the two girls' personalities (especially the older one) gave me a whole new perspective on their struggles in the world they live in. As the unfortunate…
