A Chinese Ghost Story
A naïve young tax collector for the imperial government winds up spending the night in a haunted temple. There he falls in love with a beautiful woman who, unfortunately, is dead. With the aid of a powerful Daoist Swordsman, he must defeat undead hordes, overcome a sinister Tree Demoness, and descend to the pits of hell, to fight for the spirit he loves. From TMDB

Year 2, Day #191 "Picture of a Nymph" (Wu Ma/1987) I'm told this is one of the more palatable clones of A Chinese Ghost Story. I'm all for a flick with Yuen Biao in it! Check it out, I sure as shit still need to 😅

unlabelledView post →Watching A Chinese Ghost Story (1987). I love that it starts and you’re like wow what a silly and fun movie and then the goddamned stop motion corpses show up. Literally this movie has everything. Was not expecting the Beared Man to drop straight bars about the Taoist Way 📽️ #horrorsky
unlabelledView post →#watched A CHINESE GHOST STORY 2 (1990) This sequel lacks the soulful charm of the first film, and the plot is overly convoluted, but it's still a hugely entertaining fantasy-horror movie with plenty of action, monsters, and amusing characters.
unlabelledView post →Siu-Tung Ching’s Qing Dynasty-set A CHINESE GHOST STORY sparked a long-running trend for ghost stories in Hong Kong’s booming film industry. See the one that started it all Aug 22-28 in Hong Kong Cinema Classics, presented by @gkids.com & @shoutstudios.bsky.social

unlabelledView post →I'm generally not a fan of horror. So people might find it weird that I love "A Chinese Ghost Story" (Hong Kong, 1987). Except that it's much less of a horror movie and more a supernatural romance with lots of action and comedy elements! 😅
unlabelledView post →This is spectacular news. I don't really mean the usual John Woo twofer which I've seen and owned over the years in various formats, but films like Tsui Hark's masterpiece "Peking Opera Blues," "A Chinese Ghost Story," trilogy, the elusive "Bullet in the Head" etc. WORLDWIDE rights. 👀 🔥 #filmsky

unlabelledView post →Shocktober 8: A CHINESE GHOST STORY (1987). It’s a very 1980s movie, mixing ghosts and romance, fantasy adventure and horror, with some great pre-CGI practical FX, even including a rather synthy soundtrack (my least favorite part, although it mostly worked). And there are sequels! A new favorite.
